Deputies: Man Opens Fire From Pickup On Hwy 29

May 31, 2011

An Escambia County man is charged with firing a weapon on busy Highway 29 near Walmart in Ensley.

Larry Wayne Kelly, 42, is being held on felony weapons charges in the Esambia County Jail. His bond is set at $575,000.

For an update to this story, click here.

Multiple people called 911 Sunday evening to report gunshots in the area of the Murphy Oil in front of Walmart. Deputies were unable to immediately determine where the gunshots had originated.

Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies were able to later determine that the gunfire came from a Ford Ranger driven by Kelly and gave chase. The short pursuit came to an end when Kelly crashed into another pickup and a deputy’s vehicle at Palafox and Ensley streets.

Inside Kelly’s Ford Ranger, deputies found a 12 gauge shotgun, a 38 Special, a Luger TEC-9 and an AK-47 — all loaded. In the backseat of the truck, deputies found the book “The Sociopath Next Door”.

Bullet casings were found in a parking lot near O’Reilly Auto Parts on Highway 29 just south of Walmart, and bullets were recovered from a nearby seafood business.

“This amendment was designed back in the 1700’s when there was no organized militia to help stop the invasion of the British. The last time I checked we have not been invaded in 300 hundred years.”

Stopping the British was just part of it. Another part was the recognition that the government can’t protect everybody from everybody so everybody should have the option to protect himself rather than depend of perfect government.

In fact, if you consider the facts we WERE the British up until we decided our government was harmful to us and that we needed to break away. There is always the danger our current government could turn homicidal as so many other governments have. We have people from those places: Germany, Russia, Uganda, China, Somalia, Poland, Cambodia–to name just a few whose governments decided to wipe out large segments of their people. Just because this fellow is nuts doesn’t mean there is no danger. What if we elect a crazy man as President? or if one turns crazy later?

And then there’s the math– War of 1812, we were invaded by British, set fire to what we had to repaint and call The White House. Less than 300 years ago we WERE invaded.

World War I we got involved in part because Germany suggested Mexico attack us and they would help them get back the territories we had stolen. So invasion was contemplated. For that matter the government of Mexico does not stop the invasion of a number of drug runners, so maybe we’re being invaded daily but just don’t care.

REALLY THE GUY OPENED FIRE. ARE YOU THAT NIEVE TO THINK WHAT YOU THINK. A STRAY BULLET COULD HAVE HIT A CHILD. I DONT NEED HIS SIDE OF THE STORY BECAUSE WE ALL READY HAVE IT IN THE FORM OF SHELL CASINGS AND BULLET HOLES.

  3. the second amendment is outdated on June 3rd, 2011 8:08 am

The 2nd amendment is outdated and is an overused excuse to carry automatic and large caliber guns. This amendment was designed back in the 1700’s when there was no organized militia to help stop the invasion of the british. The last time I checked we have not been invaded in 300 hundred years. There are no need for persons to carry large caliber machine guns/ hang guns or rifles. I understand the need to protect your home. Carry a shotgun. Leave it at home. Why does someone need an ak47 or a tech 9. Whats the thought? is it because its my right to carry a automatic weapon. its my right to have machine guns. Thats the dummest thing I ever heard. It should be illegal to carry weapons on a car. It should be illegal to have weapon any bigger than a 22. Other countries have strict gun laws and they dont have as many problems. And dont give me the excuse you need to defend yourself. studys have shown people with guns who have not been trained, when used missed there targets 80 percent of the time.

Larry Supporter wrote — “First, I am disappointed in all news reports covering this story. What ever happened to investigative journalism? You have the charges and what people have speculated is the “truth”. You need to remember that there are two sides to a story.”

Whether it be us, or the PNJ or WEAR or any of the others covering the story — it’s pretty hard to get “the other side” from a man that’s behind bars on over half millon bond and not likely to be released soon.

  5. Larry Supporter on June 2nd, 2011 4:09 pm

First, I am disappointed in all news reports covering this story. What ever happened to investigative journalism? You have the charges and what people have speculated is the “truth”. You need to remember that there are two sides to a story. This is not some “insane white person” as a commenter put it. He is an upstanding citizen, family man and an incredible single father. Instead of speculating what happened in the situation, let’s actually talk to the people involved and get the whole story. Yes he has some significant and detrimental charges against him, and he should be held accountable for his actions, but again, there are always two sides to a story. I hope that the truth will come out and come out soon. I also hope that everyone will see how loved this man truly is and what a wonderful person and father he is.

Second, I am disappointed in all the people that have nothing to do with their day but patronize and criticize people that they don’t even know on topics that they know nothing about. To all of you, find something of significance and importance in your life and stop wasting time in other people’s drama. And remember, you are not perfect.

Larry, we love you and we will always be here for you. You are in our prayers and we will not stop praying and supporting you.

Some of you might need to stay home, especially those who were somewhere around Walmart.Your chances of getting carjacked or hit by someone texting are pretty good.More likely than a stray bullet.matter of fact the ECSD is more likely to hit you with a stray bullet.I was in McDonalds a few years back on 9 mile rd. when they surrounded some crazy felloe on the road and shot an undetermined (by me) amount of bullets at the guy after he had already shot himself.Bullets were bouncing off the road and going through parking lots of local shopping centers. So be carefull out there.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO? WOULD YOU DEFEND HIM OR WOULD YOU SAY THE SAME THING YOU ARE SAYING ABOUT LARRY?”

I would be amazed and impressed that three years and two months after a lifetime of NOT doing such things, he had come up out of his grave and done something so out of character, so thoughtless regarding the lives of others.

Any pain and shame related to such an action would be on him not on those who disapproved his actions. I certainly wouldn’t say “somebody drove him to it:” because he would be responsible for his own actions and my Daddy knew to always keep in mind where his slugs were going and who might be hit if he missed. If he thought somebody needed killing, he would have killed THAT particular person as the Army trained him to do, not endanger everybody he met on a mad rampage.

I do not know what happened or why this man did this, but I am so grateful that no one was hurt. This world is getting so bad and so fast!!!

    To KD,
You should probably say a prayer and thank GOD that a law biding citizen or law enforcement officer did not kill this idiot when he decided to open fire on the public.
Prayers indeed, that he was spared for some reason!
Family or friend it does not matter, this was a bad decision. I ask persons like you, and others who know him or who say they know him, where were you to see the signs of trouble, you say he was not right? Do you need to be prosecuted as an accessory because you did nothing to warn others he was unstable? Or do you not feel any obligation or “duty to inform?”
Think before you speak, crimes against the general public are never tolerated by the community, no matter who commits them!

his children are obviously unhappy that their FATHER cant see them EVERYDAY … and bc of the decision their father has made. they feel the same way anyone would that was in their shoes..
but the rude comments about their father definately isnt making anything better for them..

WHAT WOULD YOU DO? WOULD YOU DEFEND HIM OR WOULD YOU SAY THE SAME THING YOU ARE SAYING ABOUT LARRY?

As I said before we are not saying what he did was OK but all of the name calling is uncalled for. He is not a monster nor is he a Sicko he is a very nice kind hearted intelligent person who made a mistake I understand it put ppl in danger but the good thing is he did NT harm anyone you all act like he killed someone. And as far as his children go they love their father more than anyone could imagine he’s a wonderful father to them and as a family member we are just trying to piece everything together so if you all can’t stop the name calling and rude comments plz quit posting. This is a hard time for all of us. IT COULD BE TOMORROW WHEN YOUR LVED ONE DOES SOMETHING YOU NEVER THOUGHT THEY WOULD DO. AND THEN HOW WOULD YOU REACT? WOULD U DEFEND THEM? WOULD YOU TALK ABOUT THEM LIKE U R TALKING ABOUT LARRY? WHAT WOULD YOU DO

I was in Walmart at the time this happened, my fiance and two of our very close friends where walking in the parking lot going to Game Stop and heard the shots fired. It’s a blessing that they weren’t hurt or anyone else for that matter. People do some crazy things for crazy reasons and alot of the time close family and friends don’t understand it. I know that feeling very well.. But it doesn’t keep me from knowing that what he (another person, another story) did was wrong. Yes, this man is going to need support from those close to him, but he also needs to get some help and pay for his crime. Again thank GOD no one was hurt.

If the children are unhappy, should it be because he has been condemned for endangering the lives of hundreds of strangers or because of what he has done?

whitepunkondope, I’m no fool and am not defending any violent criminals. There is no history of crime in this man’s background. It’s foolish for you to speak about someone you don’t know to people who have known him for years. Knowing this man like i do, trust me,…This could be anyone that YOU know and love that has been pushed over the edge. I’m not defending what he did and understand the thoughts of you that are looking from the outside in. But those of us on the inside of this situation know that this action was not part of the character of the man we have know for years and years.
This family is trying to pick up the pieces and sort this all out. Our community should be surrounding them with love not hate. What has this world come to when people add pain to an already painful, devastating situation by name calling instead of reaching out or maybe just praying.

  21. kd on June 1st, 2011 7:53 am

No one ever said what he did was OK. But we know what type of person he is and in all my life I have never once seen him mad. But people can only handle so much until they break. We are all thankful no one got hurt but it’s not OK for you ppl who don’t know him to be judgmental

Molino Mom, you are RIGHT ON.

d, you’re a fool to make a statement like that. Maybe you should be a public defender so you can try to keep all violent criminals out of jail and not back on the streets.

I’m sure they’re all “wonderful men” to those who really know them. Kelly has a major PROBLEM and he needs to be removed from society for his actions.

  23. 20 years on June 1st, 2011 7:15 am

    Molino Mom,

Defending Larry is a little strong and I too am grateful your family wasn’t hurt. My point is simply that SOMETHING is obviously wrong. The truth of his temperament and character has been overshadowed by this one act. It saddens us that have known Larry for so long that he is in this situation.

Please know this, as much respect as I personally have for William, he is reporting what is told to him…This much I know for certain, all of the facts are not being disclosed accurately. This doesn’t excuse his actions, but there is more to the story.

  24. d on June 1st, 2011 6:58 am

Molino Mom, those of us that know him and love him will never ever ever ever stop defending this man.

  25. Molino Mom on June 1st, 2011 6:03 am

To those who feel a need to defend this man…..I was sitting in sonic drive through and heard the gun shots and could have easily been hit along with my husband and two of my children……now if we had of been killed by this “wonderful man” would you like to be the one who explained to my other child who was not with us just how “wonderful” a father this man “really” is……SERIOUSLY I hope he spends ALOT of time behind bars….he could have killed many many people and yes I thank GOD he didn’t.

  26. Bjay on June 1st, 2011 12:35 am

Someone please explain to me how everyone owning guns “like the wild wild west” would have helped here? Would you have shot at Larry while he was driving down the road? If so you would be as dangerous as he was. Thats why the gun laws are there. Funny thing is that back in the “wild wild west” there was still crime. Obviously it didnt work either. Heres an idea. Get off your soapboxes and try applying your “gun rights” arguement in a forum where it would actually fit. Every time there is something regarding a “gun crime” some of you feel like its time to pat your chest and declare your I AM MAN NOW HEAR ME ROAR mentality. Its as tiring as the whole “we need a redlight there” statements everytime theres a wreck. Larry (who i know a little) has always seemed like a good guy. I have never seen anything that would have been a warning sign for this. I am really surprised by this. I wonder what set it off?

I want to add that this man is NOT a sociopath. He has a big conscience and a VERY TENDER HEART. Sociopaths have neither, except for themselves. It is his tender heart that probably caused this. A human can only handle so much grief. He reached his breaking point. That is very clear to me. If you knew him, it would be clear to you too. I know it would.

  30. ME on May 31st, 2011 3:20 pm

  31. I'm for the old, old west.... on May 31st, 2011 12:38 pm

so, where are the spurs and cowboy hats? seems like we are going back to the old, old west. carry a gun to protect yourself against the outlaws. i’m all for law abiding people to have a gun because if they outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. i feel for the deputies. they never know if they will get shot just inquiring about something. they are first responders. i don’t know about you guys, but all that hardware and a book about sociopaths…..come on…..

  32. Breaking point on May 31st, 2011 12:15 pm

Maybe there is more to the story than what has been printed. We know this man and he has always been a excellent father and person, not what all is being assumed. The purpose for all of the guns are unknown, but we do believe that they were not there for the killing of anyone. This man would not do such a terrible act. All people have problems and do reach a complete breakdown. It could be over getting bubble gum on your shoe or more extreme. It happens and we can’t control our emotions sometimes. COULD THIS BE WHAT HAPPENED TO LARRY. Please don’t judge him until all the answers are out. Think of his family and kids and if you or me were in the shoes. The police did there job as to what they saw and thank the good Lord no one was hurt.

Our prayers are with this family

    REGARDING:
“The only person with a gun here seems to be the one riding and shooting. I guess we call that an Evers Special.”

I never saw where Evers supported illegal usage of weapons. Please consider the fact that even though most can legally carry weapons, most of them don’t. People don’t carry arms around unless they feel unsafe or feel the need to attack someone else. Most don’t intend to attack others, so only the ones feeling unsafe will be armed.

Part of the reason they feel unsafe is that they know crazies and criminals WILL be armed.

The only question to consider is whether or not sane, non-criminals will be allowed to be armed as well. The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution settled the question regarding the rights of citizens other than to those who do not like to abide by the law of the Constitution.

(Please note felons can have their arms-bearing rights revoked but even then they may be illegally armed since they have already broken a few laws on their ways to becoming felons.)

Note also, if all are to be believed: People previously seemingly perfectly sane DO go nuts and be come dangerous. Thus, if ANY are armed, the danger exists. Some WILL be armed, thus disarmament won’t cure the situation.

The Second Amendment to our U. S. Constitution gives Americans the right to bear arms. We ALL had better defend and protect that right against government influence to take it away as the only non-military ones with weapons will be criminals, should we ever lose that right. “Harvard Medical School psychiatrist Stout says that as many as 4% of the population are conscienceless sociopaths who have no empathy or affectionate feelings for humans or animals. As Stout (The Myth of Sanity) explains, a sociopath is defined as someone who displays at least three of seven distinguishing characteristics, such as deceitfulness, impulsivity and a lack of remorse. Such people often have a superficial charm, which they exercise ruthlessly in order to get what they want.”
