House Against Getting Drivers Out Of The Left Lane

May 4, 2011

An effort by Rep. Scott Clemens, D-West Palm Beach, to bring up legislation that would require drivers holding up traffic in the left lane to move over to the slow lane, was run off the road Tuesday.

The House was considering a catch-all highway safety bill (SB 1150) with several items related to the Department of Highway of Motor Vehicles, when Clemens tried to introduce the proposal, noting that it passed the House in 2005.

Clemens listed the names of several Republicans who voted for it then, including current House Speaker Dean Cannon. But the sponsor of the bill, Rep. Ben Albritton, R-Wauchula, raised a point of order that the language was the part of another bill (HB 177) which has failed to get even one committee hearing this year.

Clemens then withdrew the amendment, leaving the left lane requirement appearing unlikely to pass this year.

Here is what’s even easier to understand, Mr T., 55, 60 65. Those are some typical speed limits posted on the open road.

If you have a driver’s license, then you have agreed to abide by the speed limit. If you don’t obey, you are breaking the law of the land.

I have no obligation to help to help you with your liberal ways. The law is the law in our American society.

Driving is a privilage, not a right !. NOBODY has a right to drive in either lane!!
One Florida rule of the road is always drive in right lane, except when passing
or turning left.. It’s not that hard to understand..

Football Mom of 3 said…I totally agree with Harley D. The Football mom of theree said erroneously….”people who drive AT the speed limit or below in the left hand lane are ridiculous! If you want to drive the speed limit that’s fine. I am “technically” allowed to go 5 mph over to pass you. That’s not you enabling me to break the law, that’s you being curtious enough to keep the flow of traffic moving. Have you ever seen the sign “Slower Traffic Keep Right”? MOVE OVER!!!!! Oh and BTW…………is it just me or have they STOPPED putting blinkers on new cars????? Just sayin”

I said….(laughing incredulously the whole time) So you point of order is that the “slower traffic keep right” signs trump the speed limit signs? Weak.

Also. could you tell us where you get the “allowed to go 5 miles over to pass you” came from. Is that a law of just wishful thiking? Can you cite?

It’s not my job to make sure you don’t brek the law but neither will I worry about anabling you to do so.

If you break the law you are a criminal. An outlaw. You deserve what you get. You have no right to ignore the law, you buncha liberals. Your whole point is the you are allowed to break to law.

    Gembeaux
I’m sorry maybe this is a dumb question….wouldn’t it have been
more prudent to call 911 for your mother?

Road rage encompasses much more than just what
a dictionary can provide. Road rage, also called
intermittent explosive disorder, is a term used to
refer to violent incidents resulting from stress caused
by accidents or incidents on roadways. It is often
a natural extension of aggressive driving.

Road rage frustration and aggression are not
caused by traffic, no matter how heavy. Road rage
is a learned cultural habit of retaliation when you feel
like retaliating. It’s a free choice we exercise. When
we are frustrated in heavy traffic we have a choice of
    how we’re going to respond.

    Courteous or not….it’s a choice.

There are already laws on the books against obstructing traffic. And, for those who feel like it’s their responsibility to enforce the law (without the benefit of training or authority), you don’t know what someone’s urgency is about – there may be a mother in labor on board, or another emergency in progress. I was blocked by some butthead who felt it was his job to slow me down by blocking my attempts to pass and by driving below the speed limit – all the while, my 85 year old mother lay on a cold tile floor after having fallen, bleeding from a head wound. He put several persons in jeopardy with his self-righteous behavior! Just move over and let them go – you won’t be losing anything. Really. (Did you get that, Kurt and MyTwoCent?)

Nothing should promote road rage if folks are at or below the speed limit, regardless of what lane they are in.

If you are bent on breaking the law, the rest of us are not required to help you. The speed limit is the law.

Can we rob, steal, kill? Those things are against the law as is speeding. I am stunned by the number of Christian folks who don’t cuss, smoke or drink but who think speeding is OK. Break the law is break the law. Sin is sin.

I agree it should be a courtsey. Its not you place to drive slow in the lelt lane thinking you are stopping speeders. You and me pay plenty to Escambia County’s finest to take care of that, and they do just look how many are stopped every day on 29. If you need the left lane use it Then MOVE OVER! You are promoting Road Rage. With all these citizen speed cops mabe we do need a law.

  10. eab on May 4th, 2011 2:54 pm

If a driver is traveling at the speed limit, they have the right to either lane. If someone needs to break the law, I don’t see any reason why I should aid them.

The only vehicles that have a right to move someone out of the left lane are emergency vehicles. Otherwise, slow down.

Folks act as if they have the right to break the law. They do not. If you run late, then leave earlier.

  11. Harley D on May 4th, 2011 2:50 pm

By the way…what condition requires drivers to only utilize the left lane? If there is such a condition, it should prevent them from driving….HELLO!

  12. Harley D on May 4th, 2011 2:48 pm

Why do we need laws to enforce what SHOULD BE a common courtesy? I see this all the time (not just here in Fla) where people seem to be confining themselves to the left lane when signs everywhere direct slower traffic to the right lane. Note, those signs do not say “Unless you are doing the speed limit” or whatever. Like I said, COURTESY! Why is it so difficult for some people to simply allow passing traffic the left lane and remain in the right until they also need to pass? I travel the same route on 29 every work day and encounter many of the same people who constantly, many times less than the speed limit, remain in the left lane. I too practice what I preach and what was taught to me when I started driving, pass on the left then move to the right. An easy principle. If we need to pass a law it is to stop people from using cell phones, especially texting and such. Most devices these days have hands free yet 90% of the people in the aforementioned rant are using their cell phones…

I agree with Mytwocent…..they honk at me when I am turning like I’m just suppose
to turn at 50 miles an hour so they don’t have to slow down. Still passing and
trying to kill everyone on 97 when the cops aren’t around

  14. Mytwocent on May 4th, 2011 7:47 am

We have to drive in the left lane at times, say we are going to make a turn or need to get into the lane way before we come upon a left turn lane or the road we need to turn into. The speed limit is the same in both lanes. Some may have a vision problem that dictates they drive in the left lane. Speeders are the ones complaining, instead of those driving the speed limit in left lane, the ones speeding up behind us and riding on our bumpers, flashing lights, blowing horns, should SLOW DOWN.

  15. but on May 4th, 2011 7:44 am

yes, the speed limit is the same regardless of the lanes, BUT, there are people who go WELL below the speed limit and travel in the left lane, when they should be in the ’slow’ lane.

  16. Kurts on May 4th, 2011 7:29 am

The speed limit is the same in the right & left lanes !
