Escambia’s Murder Rate Highest In The State

April 28, 2011

Escambia County had the highest murder rate in Florida during 2010, according to Florida Department of Law Enforcement statistics.

There were more murders per 100,000 people in Escambia County than any other county last year — including Duval and Miami-Dade counties. There were 29 murders in Escambia County last year, 11 more than 2009 and almost three times more than 2005 and 2006.

Of the 29 murders in 2010, 16 involved a firearm, five involved a knife or other cutting instrument, three involved hands or fists and five were classified as “other”. Just four were considered to be domestic violence incidents.

eab, I have worked out there for 25 years. I was referring to all of the promises he made while he was running for Sheriff. I believe he boasted that he will find and give ECAT or some other county service 1 million dollars when he finds it from where Ronnie Mac hid it. He also promised to make the starting pay for deputies 35,000. Neither has happened yet. I am not saying he is a bad guy. He has had over 2 years and like Obama, he and his administration has to quit blaming everything on the previous Sheriff. Go to Google and look up david morgan for sheriff and take the time and watch those videos where he was making promises about lowering the crime statistics etc. It is interesting.

Wondering said…”David, I can appreciate what you are trying to do but the statistics speak for themselves. David Morgan made all kinds of promises during the election, and he did not come through. Just all smoke and mirrors. Morgan cares more about how he looks in front of the camera than anything. Morgan has ruined the Sheriff’s Office and the next Sheriff will have alot of work to do.”

I said…I ain’t one to follow the company line but I have to agree with David Craig on this. Morgan inherited a number of problems that were not fully disclosed statistically. I do believe that he’s making a bit of progress on open and effective law enforcement. I disagree with him on several issues but I think he’s honest and hard working. I would support him today and he will be sheriff again.

Yes, he is in front of the cameras. he *should* be putting a face on law enforcement in our county. Folks would ask “Where the heck is the darn sheriff? ” if he wasn’t. This is one he cannot win, so his best bet is to do what he thinks is right.

Statistics by themselves do not paint the complete picture. Sheriff Morgan has spoken several times about how these numbers may have been manipulated in the past. For example, if reports were discouraged & crimes coded as lesser offenses then the stats would reflect the appearance of a lower crime rate comprised of less serious offenses. The Morgan administration has been encouraging citizens to report all crimes and the sheriff stated that this would lead to higher crime statistics overall. With TAC, Desk to Roads, the expansion of Neighborhood Watch groups and Clean Sweep Operations the number of crimes reported and commensurate statistics have naturally increased. Some clearance rates are greater and some lesser than national averages for the specific types of crimes. Murder in our county did spike last year but in 2011 there have only been 2 homicides in Escambia County to date. We are pleased to see that 3 new Neighborhood Watch Groups have formed in Farm Hill, Mid County and Cottage Hill. Timely reports of crime and suspicious activity to our dispatchers at 436-9620 will lead to improved enforcement and higher arrest rates. Please consider forming a Neighborhood Watch group where you live. Call 436-9281 or email me at gcraig@escambiaso.com. With your help we can build a better tomorrow. REGARDING:
“G.W. called 9 countries in the middle east the axis of evil.
Gee and we wonder why we have enemies.”

Methinks ‘twas 3, not nine, only 2 in the Middle East. If they hated us because of the statement, why did they kill us before it?

2002 STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS:
“—-Some of these regimes have been pretty quiet since September the 11th. But we know their true nature. North Korea is a regime arming with missiles and weapons of mass destruction, while starving its citizens.

“Iran aggressively pursues these weapons and exports terror, while an unelected few repress the Iranian people’s hope for freedom.

“Iraq continues to flaunt its hostility toward America and to support terror. The Iraqi regime has plotted to develop anthrax, and nerve gas, and nuclear weapons for over a decade. This is a regime that has already used poison gas to murder thousands of its own citizens — leaving the bodies of mothers huddled over their dead children. This is a regime that agreed to international inspections — then kicked out the inspectors. This is a regime that has something to hide from the civilized world.

“States like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world. By seeking weapons of mass destruction, these regimes pose a grave and growing danger. They could provide these arms to terrorists, giving them the means to match their hatred. They could attack our allies or attempt to blackmail the United States. In any of these cases, the price of indifference would be catastrophic.”

    David thinking they sounded evil,
    but could I be wrong

We need something here and that’s a fact. There is crime everywhere
you turn. G.W. called 9 countries in the middle east the axis of evil.
Gee and we wonder why we have enemies.

Morgan is at least organizing clean ups with all the support we
could want. It’s too bad he is using one of the orgs. he is using
as they are just part of the problem and because of who they
    are, they can’t be stopped.

Your right Morgan needs to clean house, but I don’t know if we
are talking about the same ones. Most of the people who don’t
like Morgan just don’t like getting traffic tickets, laws enforced, and
the rules that help GOOD citizens shoved down their throats.

Good Luck Sheriff. keep trying. It took a long time to get
this lawless and it will take even longer to actually clean it up.

Pensacola and Escambia county is the new Miami as for as drugs and thugs are concerned. Maybe we can get crockett and tubbs out of retirement to clean the streets.
I’ve lived here nearly forty years. We’ve always had crime. It just never got the publicity it has gotten over the last few years.

■what ever, he did not take over a mess.

You got to be kidding me!

  12. sad on April 28th, 2011 7:03 pm

What ever, you can’t possible serious!

  13. what ever on April 28th, 2011 4:17 pm

Kay, you can’t possibly be serious!!!
Like Obama? Obama is the problem, he did not take over a mess? we are in more wars at one time now than this country ever has been in.
Sheriff Morgan has his own issues, do not blame it on a previous sheriff. sheriff morgan had and still does have the option cleaning house in the department. he is in control and keeping all the dead weight around is his choice!

  14. Kay on April 28th, 2011 3:52 pm

You know Morgan is just like Obama in that he took over a MESS.
You can’t clean up something that bad in a year or two. I have watched
Morgan and I think he is trying to clean things up, but we are
over run with the criminal element at every level.

  15. Wondering on April 28th, 2011 6:56 am

General Morgan said he was going to put an end to violet crime. Morgan is gone with Obama in 2012.
