Cantonment Man Dies After Being Crushed In Garbage Truck

April 6, 2011

A Cantonment man is dead after being trapped in a garbage truck early Tuesday morning in Escambia County.

Officials believe Phillip Wayne Murphy, Jr., 36,  took shelter from the cold or storms in a dumpster  before it was dumped into a Waste Management garbage truck. Murphy was discovered in compacted trash in the truck on West Hood Drive off Highway 29, near Wal-mart just before 5 a.m.

After emergency crews freed him from the garbage truck, Murphy was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital where he later died.

Sincere condolences to the family for the unusual and untimely death of their loved one and for their grief.~~And God bless the emergency workers who responded and did all they could. I love them all for their dedication in every emergency as they must then carry those images in their mind for their entire lifetime. Every dedicated ER worker has an amazing calling for their profession and I’m so thankful for them.

Finally! Glad to read some warm comments, and not the heartless, thoughtless BS thrown about PNJ’s website. They should be ashamed of themselves. There is more to this story than is being reported at this time. Wayne most certainly was not homeless, and he does have a warm and loving family. My thoughts go out to you guys in Pensacola. I too, am sorry I cannot be with you all.

Bama Boy and Really you are correct I Thought I was on the wonderful PJN site when I wrote this. I can’t believe the comments they allow.

ms cantonment probably just finished reading the comments on the PNJ website about this incident when she posted. The comments left on the PNJ about anything and everything are heartless, cruel and totally unacceptable by another HUMAN BEING. Everyone is so bitter now and extremely judgemental, I refuse to read or buy that paper. You never know what is living around you and it’s scary to know that these type of people are ever growing in our communities. What’s wrong with helping out and giving encouraging words to others who are grieving. Prayers to the family of this gentleman.

Ms Cantonment, Nobody on this post says it was wrong to get him out…What are you talking bout?

  17. ms cantonment on April 6th, 2011 12:16 pm

To all who thinks they are right your wrong. He was a person just like the rest of us and how dare anybody say it was a waste of time to get him out. I hope none of you ever have do endure a horrific death in your family. I have known him and his family for 20 years plus and they are good people. He was a father, brother, son and friend no matter if he was homeless or not he was still a PERSON. My prayers go out to his children and his family. May you finally rest in peace and look down on all of us who need guidence.

He was not homeless, he had a family. He was just walking because he didn’t have a car. He was simply getting out of the bad weather.

  21. Bent on April 6th, 2011 7:25 am

Was he homeless or was he simply seeking shelter from the bad weather that night?
