Alabama Tornado Death Toll Surpasses 200

April 28, 2011

The death toll from Alabama’s tornado outbreak on Wednesday has risen to 204.

Emergency crews worked since last night to free people trapped in the rubble from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham and beyond — and to recover the bodies of the victims. A state of emergency has been declared by Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, and Pres. Obama has done the same. Nearly 1,500 Alabama National Guardsmen have been activated to assist.

Over 1,700 people were injured.

Authorities are saying the death tolls is only expected to rise in the coming days.

The video at the top of the page shows damage near McFarland Boulevard in Tuscaloosa. The video below shows the storm live on Birmingham television.

My hearts go out to people all over the south, Especially to my old home of Tuscaloosa. My sister attends the University of Alabama and thankfully she’s okay. I graduated from there as well and was hurt to see such devastation and the loss of not only memories but also lives. However, I am so thankful to God for the lives that were spared and praying for the bereaved families. We must remain prayerful.

someone I deeply care about lives in cottondale, and he lives in a trailer. I am at school right now and don’t have home internet access due to the storm, and I have no way to contact him because he doesn’t have a cellphone. I am so worried about him, I feel like I’m going to pass out. Please, if anyone has a list of people killed/injured in tuscaloosa and cottondale, email it to me at emilylaurenhay@hotmail.com
if he is hurt, I will be crushed. but, not knowing if he is okay or not is suffocating me, and I would rather just find out asap.
    thanks.

@ Jere: good luck in contacting family; I got a hold of some friends who live in the outskirts of Tuscaloosa and luckily they are ok but land lines are down in many areas, and cell phone service is very bad, which is probably downed cell towers. I got through on a cell phone but it was not a good connection.

Prayers are with all the people affected, and all those who mourn today.

But for the Grace of the Lord, these same images may well have been recorded
over North Escambia…. very thankful that they were not….

What would your actions be if we were under the tornado watch, and you heard the ‘freight train’ coming?

Has this tornado been given an Enhanced Fujita rating yet? It looks like a whopper!

If you are interested in helping, here is an opportunity. Lynn and Steve Lambeth will be traveling to the afflicted area in the morning to meet with their brother in law who is a pastor of a local church. First Baptist Bratt is collecting batteries of any size and paper goods ( paper plates, napkins, towel, toilest paper etc . . .) from 8 AM till 6 PM today, 4/28/2011. If you drop these things off today they will be delivered tomorrow.

may God bless you as you bless others,

    Gary Wieborg
