Sheriff’s Copter Flies Again
March 29, 2011
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office helicopter returned to the air on a limited basis beginning Tuesday, according to Sheriff David Morgan.
Morgan grounded the Sheriff’s helicopter unit in February, 2009 citing the $800,000 annual price tag as being cost prohibitive, but now the department has received a grant that will allow the helicopter to respond to violent felonies and life threatening situations.
“We were able to obtain limited funding in the form of a grant that will allow us to use the helicopter to assist in our efforts to reduce violent crimes,” said Sheriff’s spokesperson Deputy Chris Welborn. “The helicopter crew will be available for call out, but only for the most serious situations.”
In the past, the helicopter was very effective in locating criminals on the run, lost children and elderly adults and drowning victims, he said.
“The helicopter is an effective tool, and as long as grant funding is available we will continue to use the helicopter on a limited basis,” Morgan said.

Nothhng that new here.
If you were close to where the copters(2 ) are stored you know they have been flyin since he grounded them them in 09.
On a limited basis of course.
Boomer Bill said….”We need a Real Republican sheriff.”
I said….Hmmm….I think that’s the third time I have seen the term “Real Republican” used around here lately. Help me stay up to date, will ya….the Republican party is now Real Republicans, Tea Party, and Regular Republican (lite)? That about sum it up?
REGARDING:
“I am glad you are such an expert in law enforcement. Maybe you can share with the rest of us how a dog can perform an aerial search? ”
You asked the question and I pictured a number of dogs suspended from weather balloons sniffing out suspects as they floated along.
At a guess, though, the idea might have been that dogs on the ground could do a good job of sniffing out people on foot. They probably wouldn’t do all that well against suspects in cars, though, because dogs don’t drive well–too busy hanging their heads out the window.
Model airplanes with cameras MIGHT do the job in some situations (similar to what we use in Afghanistan, but probably without the missiles lest some officer yield to temptation) but dogs don’t fly them well either, too quickly distracted by squirrels.

We need a Real Republican sheriff .
What do you think about them flying treetop high over your property and looking at you with the scope on a rifle . That’s what they did to me before it was grounded. I don’t like it at all.Hey Sheriff invest in a pair of binoculars!
I think it is a very good idea. Everyone forgets what our officers face on $32,000 dollars a year. But everyone is quick to call 911 when something happens. Just remember if something happened to your child you would want the helicopter flying to find your lost child. Yeah it cost money to fly it but so does everything else. They have caught alot of people that need to be behind bars with this thing.
what has Morgan done other than posture, preen and strut? Crackheads running amok and cold case murders backing up and now he is going to put Air McNesby back on line? Am I missing something?
The Nameless One said….”yes, of course… how foolish of us… of course obama deserves ALL the credit for this…. how could we miss that?”
I said….Err…because you miss most everything else as well?
i dont know where u get obama mixed up in this we live in north escambia not d.c.
pilots make more than 40g a year
and both officers will have their road cars still also
Let’s see, if we pay a pilot lets say $40,000 a year and one Deputy lets say $32,000 a year, that leaves about $28,000 left to actually fly the Air Frame. I think Morgan said during his Campaign it cost about $1500.00 an hour to fly, that doesn’t get it in the air very long.
Mr. 5 star, you let me down on this move……..
retha,
I am glad you are such an expert in law enforcement. Maybe you can share with the rest of us how a dog can perform an aerial search?
Richard,
yes, of course… how foolish of us… of course obama deserves ALL the credit for this…. how could we miss that?
somebody has got to pay pilots.our tax payer money.dogs find people better than a copter.
While I support Sheriff Morgan and like the job he’s doing, he did not pay for this. This money came from a federal grant.
In other words, from the Obama administration.
native
by the time they get to this end of the county our second amendment rights will have done protected my family. greg evers keeps fighting for us to keep them, thank you greg. it takes life flight a little while to get up here and i am pretty sure it is faster than ecso copter.
just saying we get 100,000 so we spend 700,000 out of our kiddie that is suposed to be empty.
To Richard…I bet you voted for obama (little “o” intended!). Just wait until you truly need a cop whether during a home invasion or whatever!! One day YOU will realize the importance of the copter in the air again! For we are so polluted with druggies and thugs that our chances of needing the copter increases daily!!!
Does this sheriff use his funds wisely?
It would seem he does for the most part.
Now if he would just use some soap and water and clean up that filthy jail. . .
I am glad the Sheriff waited to fund this great tool before using it.
I only wish the rest of our government were are responsible.
Thanks to the ECSO, glad you have this tool back to help you keep us safe.
What about the required mechanic and pilot, they are still on the payroll whether it flys or not.
I am glad that the Sheriff waited until he could pay for this to bring it back.
I only wish such an attitude were more prevalent in our government.
Congrats to the ECSO, thanks for your faithful service.
Good job Sheriff, keep up the good work.
Say what you want about the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and their helicopter, but I believe the helicopter is a great crime-fighting tool, if we can afford it. When I was the victim of a home invasion, and was holding the criminal at gunpoint, it was an indescribable relief to see the ECSO helicopter hovering above me.
If our government would quit wasting money (such as a free ride for illegal aliens, etc.), we could afford to hire many more deputies and provide them with all the tools necessary to greatly reduce crime.
Those who make negative, ignorant comments about our sheriff’s department, would more than likely change their tune, if they were ever in real need of help.
Wow just in time for them to ride back and forth at the beach while girls layout to tan.
800,000 – 100,000 = 700,000 still sounds like alot of money left to come up with to pay for this service.
