Poarch Creek Indians Donate $50,000 To Northview High

March 3, 2011

The Poarch Band of Creek Indians have donated $50,000 to Northview High School from an educational endowment fund.

“Northview High School is appreciative of the donation of educational funds from the Poarch Band of Creek Indians,” Northview Principal Gayle Weaver said Wednesday. “The monies will be used to enhance and supplement the academic programs at Northview.”

After donating over $1.5 million to Atmore area schools in early December, the Tribe announced the creation of a $350,000 educational endowment fund for schools in surrounding communities. Schools were given the opportunity to seek a portion of the $350,000.

Last year, Northview submitted a “wish list” of items to be purchased with the $50,000, Weaver said. The Tribe will purchase approved items on behalf of the school.

Weaver said the school is seeking technology items, including document cameras and iPads, to enhance existing technology at the school, and equipment for the school’s horticulture program.

In December the Poarch Creek Indians made the following donations to Atmore area schools:

  • Escambia County High School/Escambia County Middle School $687,360
  • Rachel Patterson Elementary $78,000
  • A.C. Moore School $112,547
  • Huxford Elementary $337,000
  • Escambia Academy $311,500
  • Atmore Christian School $100,000.

“Part of being a good neighbor is helping out others in need. Education is the bedrock of productive successful lives for these youngsters; we are happy and proud to be able to make this contribution to their future today,” said Tribal Chairman Buford L. Rolin after the donations were made.

Always someone to be negative and dim the shining light. Maybe everyone will benefit some from such a great deed by the PCI.

I’m going to leave a thought here:
We’ll see who gets those iPads, who uses that technology, and whatever else they’ve bought with this money. Honor students, the ones who could benefit most in my opinion, don’t get to see any of it, that’s for sure. They already have doc cameras in almost all the classrooms.

    But anyway,
Thank you very much, Poarch Creek.
It takes a lot to still be a shining light in this world full of darkness.

Only the Atmore area schools were given the earlier donation. Escambia County Alabama schools were not, but had the opportunity to make requests for the latest round of contributions.

    Big Al….

Re-read the article and you’ll find that back in December schools in Escambia County, Alabama were given well over ONE MILLION DOLLARS!

These folks are not compelled or obligated to give, they are just good people with good values. This is money well spent and we appreciate it. And while our county commisioners want to build boat ramps, these folks know how to invest in the future. Thank you Poarch Creek Indians.

This is wonderful news….for Northview. BUT.. the last time I looked the Casino was in Escambia County Alabama, and it was Alabama’s Governor who wanted to shut it down. Perhaps a contribution to Escambia County High in Atmore or Flomaton, or T R Miller would impress Dr. Bently. Just thinking out loud.

And the Govenor wants to shut down ths casino? Not! They do not have to give back but they have chosen to wich is a wonderful thing to have done. Helping our schools is helping our children. Good job PCI keep up the great work in the communities.

What a wonder contribution. The Porche Band of Creeks have always been active in helping the community. Alot of people are employeed by their casino, and that helps the economy. I am so inspired by this gesture, tomorrow, I am gonna take my paycheck straight to the slot machines. Not really. But we should all thank them proper. Really.

How much did Atmore donate to the area schools or anything else? All they did was increase everyone’s taxes. And borrow more money from River Cane.

What an awesome way to help the community by helping the children!! With the state budgets looking to cut educational funding, this is a great opportunity to meet the needs and desires of the local students.

Poarch Creek Indian Tribe really does a lot to help the community. What a blessing for Northview. Glad we’ve got good leadership that took the opportunity to seek a portion of this grant. Thank you !

    Story reads;

“Schools were given the opportunity to seek a portion of the $350,000.”

I guess it is up to “Bratt and Ernest Ward”.
