No Arrest In Century Double Shooting

March 7, 2011

Just over a week after two people were shot during a private party at a Century community center, the gunman remains at large.

As of late Monday, there have been no arrests in the double shooting at the town’s Habitat Building, a community center located on East Pond Street. The building was rented at the time of the shooting to a Century woman for the purpose of a “Teen Party” for $100, plus an additional $100 deposit.

The rental agreement did not require the woman to have any sort of security present for the party. For several months, the town has discussed the need to require security at parties and other functions at their community centers following other reports of violence and potential alcohol use. The council considered a stricter policy — with security required — at their Monday night meeting. Read more…

During the February 26 incident, two people were shot when gunfire erupted at an early morning party attended by about 100 people. Ieshia Mitchell, 20, of Century, was hit in the left  knee and later airlifted to a Pensacola hospital, and  19-year old Register Yelder of Atmore was shot in the leg. A third person, Stacy O’Neal Johnson, 18, of Atmore, was injured when he was hit in the head with a bottle during the incident.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said a suspect had been identified in the shooting, but there have been no arrests. The suspect, once arrested, will face a felony charge for firing a weapon into a crowd.

    When I was growing up in the fifties in Century, we called it a “jook joint” – the word jook meant juke but we just mispronounced it on purpose……lol

    Where were the parents – chaperones – any responsible adult??

    understand “jute” is a real word, just not appropriate in this case

    David wrote:> try not to get mad but it’s usually spelled Juke Joint,

    David I also thought juke would be correct, but according to my Firefox spell check, jute is correct?!?!?!?

    try not to get mad but it’s usually spelled Juke Joint,

    Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fibre that can be spun into coarse, strong threads and the term Jute Joint brings up the image of the threads being spun, which is confusing.

    A Juke Box was a music player which played selections after being fed money. Places which sold alcoholic beverages and had Juke boxes would be Juke Joints even though other places had Juke boxes too.

    David doubting anger will be avoided

    open a daycare or rent it out as a church or alcoholics meeting…anything but a jute joint!

    ask yourselves this;
    even with a security gaurd on duty, will that stop folks from running a jute joint out of this building? if so, that will be the simplest of solutions. if not, what will it take to make sure there are no shootings here ever again? that is what needs to be discussed at the town meeting tonight.
    not;
    how do we cover our bunks in the future so we don’t get sued when a tragedy finally occurs because we were totally satisfied with turning a blind eye and business as usual.

    Concerned Citizen ask: What happened to it and why hasn’t this dirtbag been arrested yet?

    It’s pretty clear that these people are not cooperating with the “PoPos” as they call them.
    Why, because if he is arrested and he talks, (which he probably will) there will be more arrest than just him.

    These people are now claiming the shootings were from a gang.
    The only gang here is the people throwing these parties.

    If we can get enough evidence to arrest one or more of them, the person who did the shooting will likely be named.

    Come on “PoPos” the evidence is there, lets make an arrest.

    Hindsight is always better than foresight, but looking back to the party before this were there was also evidence of drunken violence and two 55 gallon drums of liquor bottles were found, the bottles in those drums should have been removed from the drums by investigators and fingerprinted to try to establish a series of prints on the bottles for the same person and try to establish where the Liquor was purchased.

    To my knowledge Flomaton has no Liquor store and I don’t think you could buy enough Liquor from Odom’s Bar in one given night to fill up two 55 gallon drums.

    My belief is that these people are going to a discount Liquor store, buying the Liquor in large amounts and selling them for a profit at these parties.

    Selling Liquor for a profit without a Liquor license is a crime.

    Take note that the rental contract stated “NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES” ON THE PREMISES”.

    In the earlier article there was a suspect identifed and a warrant was filed for the shooter. What happened to it and why hasn’t this dirtbag been arrested yet? This is a big deal and the sheriff needs to get this reckless gun slinger off of our streets TODAY!
