McDavid Animal Abuse Complaint Investigated

March 8, 2011

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a reported case of animal abuse in McDavid.

Sunday morning, the Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in the 100 block of Highway 164 after an anonymous caller reported the alleged abuse.  The responding deputy found four bulldogs, one of which had suffered injuries to his face and was having trouble walking, according to Deputy Chris Welborn, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office. Another dog appeared to have been injured in a fight.

Escambia County Animal Control responded and took possession of the two injured dogs.

No charges were immediately filed, and further information was not released.

    regarding:
“I WISHED I COULD SUE ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE LIED ON ME ”

    Dear cousin,
What lies did they tell on you? You would have a hard time suing them since I never noticed anyone mentioning your name. Most of us didn’t even know you were the dog lover in question. If they had known you were keeping these lovely animals for your protection, they might have discussed how they could protect you while chained.

Not I, I wouldn’t have cared if you were raising them to eat.

IF IHAD THE MONEY I WOULD SUE YOU FIRST YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS SAD IS THAT I DON’T THE MONEY TO GO GET THE D0GS IT IS 119.00 IF I COULD GO GET THEM TOMMORROW THEY ADD 7.00 A DAY AND WHEN THE 13 TH GETS HERE THEY ARE GOING TO KILL THEM BOTH BECAUSE I CAN’T AFFORD TO GO GET THEM. EVERYONE WHO SAID THEY WANTED ME TO GET FINED WILL GET WHAT THEY WANTED BUT I’M NOT GUILTY OF ANYTHING EXCEPT NOT KNOWING THAT IT WAS AGAINST THE LAW TO TIE A DOG.

@ Jessica ~ It is illegal in Escambia Co. to leave a tethered (chained) dog unattended because of the many potential dangers: choking/strangling on the chain, attacks by roaming animals, abuse by humans, chains becoming tangled so dog cannot reach water, etc. This case is a prime example of why it is illegal to chain when you’re not there to monitor.

Dogs tethered for long periods can become highly aggressive. Dogs feel naturally protective of their territory; when confronted with a perceived threat, they respond according to their fight-or-flight instinct. A chained dog, unable to take flight, often feels forced to fight

Leaving a dog on a chain and ignoring him is how to raise an aggressive dog.

Nobody said they were. Thus, you are defending bulldogs from accusations nobody ever made. (Talk about throwing stones!!!!)

I couldn’t make sense of the rest of your post so won’t consider arguing with it.

NT ALL BULLDOGS ARE BAD. TWO OF MY NEIGHBORS ARE ARGUING ABOUT TWO BULLDOGS ONE NEIGHBOR CLAIMS THAT HIS DOG WAS KILLED BY 2 BULLDOGS AS WELL AS MY CAT. YET THE NEIGHBOR THAT SAID HIS WAS KILLED GLADLY ACCEPTED A BULLDOG PUPPY WHICH DIED FROM PARVO. UPON INVESTATION IT WAS FOUND THAT THE DOG THAT DIED HAS ANNOTHESE BULDOGS HAVEYED THE BULLDOGS AND OTHER NEIGHBORS ANIMALS. THESE BULLDOGS HAVE PLAYED WITH CHILDREN IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND NEVER HURT ANYONE. BY THE WAY MY CAT CAME HOME AFTER THE OTHER NEIGHBOR TOLD ME THE BULLDOGS KILLED IT.
I PERSONALY KNOW THE PEOPLE INVOVED AND THERE WAS NO INTENTIAL DOG FIGHTING THEY WEREN’T EVEN HOME OR THE NEIGHBORS WOULDN’T HAVE HAD HAD TO CALL ANYONE. TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU KNOW TO BE FACTS IF YOU ARE PERFECT THEN THROW STONES AND IF NOT THROW DOWN YOUR STONES.

  10. OMRBH on March 10th, 2011 1:11 am

@yo. I’m no genious, but I have no idea who “this is”, but it certainly looks like dog fighting wheather some dogs just got loose and went at itor whether they were tossed into the ring by their owners. Sure hope we will hear more from the investigation!

  11. OMRBH on March 10th, 2011 12:42 am

Mary and Kiz. Welcome to the “boonies”. The longer you stay here and really watch what goes on, the more you will learn. Never had my dogs mate with coyotes as far as I know and have had one killed by coyotes, but believe me, there are packs of wild dogs that are sometimes several generations from their domestic ancestors and they roam north Escambia and into Alabama. They are wild dogs! They will mate with coyotes.
Now, I hope we will soon learn more about the ongoing investigation!

    To Liz,

Sorry to disappoint you Liz, but they (coy dogs) do exist. We have seen them on our property this month. I even have a picture of it. They are a mix of dog and coyote and they are WILD!! This is the country.!!

  14. jessica on March 9th, 2011 5:12 pm

there not back on a chain there at the vet..

  15. Candi on March 9th, 2011 4:57 pm

If the dogs are so loved, they should probably be at a Vet’s office instead of back on the chain with blood everywhere.

  16. tallyho on March 9th, 2011 4:43 pm

Why do people own dogs and have to chain them and treat them this way. What is the purpose of having that many pits other then fighting. What a shame!!

  17. jessica on March 9th, 2011 4:06 pm

ok i know and happen to love the people the dogs belong to and they were not home when this happened.. they would never fight their dogs. the dog got off the chain and was fighting with the other dog. we feel sorry for the dogs to but you cant blame thee owner of the dog for this ACCIDENT!!!! cause that is what this is.. so before people go accusing the owner get the whole story please!! we feel as bad as everyone else about what what happened.. but we love our dogs just as everyone else.. we dont have dogs to fight them, we havee them to love and take care of as everyone else!!!! please get the whole story before spreading rumors that are not true…

    thank you jessica martin

Poor thing!! You can see by this photo the animal is worn out. Abused, tired, bleeding…no spark left inside. A pure shame. Yes, it looks like an older dog too. Chained up…close enough to be used as bait for the other dogs. Maybe all 4 dogs are abused so they fight with each other for survial. Any way you slice it “HORRIBLE living conditions for any animal or person.” Shame on someone who should have been responsible for these animals care and well being!

  19. CINDY COLLIER on March 9th, 2011 3:17 pm

this is absolutely disgraceful – down right cruel as well as wicked – poor poor dogs awwww

  20. Horrific! on March 9th, 2011 1:54 pm

    Pleassseeeee!
Anyone with eyes can see that this dog has bites all over it’s face.
This dog was used in a dog fight for money.
This owner should be charged and put away. This poor animal
    maks me want to cry.

  21. Kaylee on March 9th, 2011 1:32 pm

Looking at this, it is a Pit Bull and an older one looking at the gray hair on the nose. :-( Our Pit Bull was recently stolen and by the grace of God we got him back. I can’t imagine what would have happened to him if someone went thru the trouble of stealing him. My heart goes out to these poor dogs. I hope justice is served. Maybe the owner should be ripped apart by a vicious dog and see how they like it.

  22. no name on March 9th, 2011 11:52 am

    What a complete shame..poor baby!

  23. Wild dogs on March 9th, 2011 8:44 am

Wild dogs roaming in the countryside do mate with coyotes and the mixture is dangerous.

  24. Carolyn on March 9th, 2011 6:24 am

LOOKING AT THIS POOR DOG IN THE PIC. ARE FACTS!! WHAT IN GOD’S NAME IS WRONG WITH SOME OF THESE PEOPLE? THEY NEED TO BE LOCKED UP AND TREATED LIKEWISE.

  25. unchainyourdog on March 9th, 2011 5:49 am

In the lower left corner of the dog house, you’ll notice a chain. I don’t know if the dog is actually chained at the time of the attack or any other circumstances. A chained dog could have been attacked by a dog that broke off it’s chain. Regardless of the circumstances, it’s ILLEGAL in Escambia Co. to tether (chain) your dog unless you are outside monitoring the dog. Unattended tethering was banned on April 22, 2010.

  26. mary on March 9th, 2011 5:39 am

Coydogs? ok! I live “in the boonies” as OMRBH would like us to think that dogs & coyotes “MATE” is stupid. I have had dogs since I’ve lived out here & I know there are coyotes in my woods…but have never had 1 try to get @ my female dogs or fight w/the male dogs. My cats have come home almost destroyed by some kind of animal. I do agree that all the dogs should have been taken & the owner charged. That picture is sooo sad!

  27. Craig M. on March 8th, 2011 11:22 pm

And that photo ? is NOT a bull dog – a Staffordshire more likely!

  28. Craig M. on March 8th, 2011 11:19 pm

They should have taken all 4 dogs, until the cause has been determined – to leave 2 dogs at that residence, in a possible abuse case ,is just too dumb!

  29. OMRBH on March 8th, 2011 9:59 pm

@ Liz. You obviously are not a country girl. Yes, coyote’s and dog’s do mix. Not real often, but under the right circumstances, yes! Up here in the boonies it’s not uncommon to hear the coyotes at night and see them during the day!
This case just looks like dogs fighting.
We need to let the powers-that-be continue their investigations.

  30. Jim W on March 8th, 2011 4:55 pm

By the looks of the dog pictured he has been fighting. Now it’s a matter of was the owner doing this with the dogs by making them fight or did they do it on their own. I’m not sure we have the whole story here. I would like to know more but this I can say. A animal never has a choice in who owns them nor do they wish to be abused by being made to fight if that is the case. If that is the case they need to severly punish the owners or who ever did this.

  31. Yo on March 8th, 2011 3:49 pm

it doesn’t take a genius to know who this is, and it would shock me if it wasn’t dog fighting. I can’t wait to see David Green’s comment on this one, lol.

  32. Liz on March 8th, 2011 2:34 pm

Coy dogs? A coyote would rather eat your dog than breed with it. Sorry…not a good excuse. Most likely considering the breed of dog…it was dogfighting.

  33. atmore on March 8th, 2011 2:21 pm

Umm, how could this be automatically an abuse case? I understand that it may very well be but at the same time, My parents live out in the country and one of their dogs was attacked once, I could not imagine them being accused of abuse, it’s just going to happen sometimes. Now I will say that as soon as they realized what happend they took him to the vet and got him checked out and started doctoring the wounds, but it’s a fact of life..animals get into fights, just like humans

  34. no name on March 8th, 2011 11:41 am

OMG no chares were filed WTH – come on folks you know they did this..my suggestion would be – rub the owners down with raw meat and then let the dogs GO!! it a good thing i am not in the postion to get my hands on the owners.

  35. think it through on March 8th, 2011 9:43 am

Coyotes are out. There are coy dogs (mixed dog w/ coyotes out). Don’t go accusing until you know the facts. They are wild!!

  36. KIKI on March 8th, 2011 7:59 am

if someon can harm or neglect an animal, there is no telling what they could do to a human.

  37. T on March 8th, 2011 7:33 am

    Heartbreaking :(

  38. unchainyourdog on March 8th, 2011 5:53 am

I have to wonder why Animal Control left the other two dogs there to suffer fates unknown.

  39. ellenb on March 8th, 2011 5:50 am

If that is where I think it is, you shouldn’t't expect any better. Abuse, dogs drugs, & people is rampant there.

  40. art on March 8th, 2011 5:36 am

this boils my blood. it don’t take a genius to figure this out folks. shame shame shame. more investigating please. the person(s) responsible for this need to have a come to jesus meeting with johnny law. dog fighting is illegal last i heard.
