Three Charged With Dumping Half Ton Of Trash Along Perdido River

February 8, 2011

Three people are facing charges for dumping a half ton of garbage along the Perdido River in North Escambia.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Lt. Dan Hahr located a large amount of household garbage that was dumped along the road to The Pipes in Perdido River Wildlife Management Area. After going through the pile, he identified the residence in Pensacola that the garbage came from by old mail that was in the pile.  Upon further investigation, Lieutenant Hahr determined the tenants of the house had moved and the owner had paid someone to haul off the garbage and leftover belongings.

Melih Saklivan, a  49-year old legal alien from Turkey,  25-year old Kimberly Margaret Hudgins, of Pensacola; and Patrick Stephen Murphy, 26, of Lillan, Ala;, are all facing felony charges of commercial littering — a third degree felony.

The owner of the home where the trash originated told FWC officers that he had found a man named “Patrick” on Craigslist and hired him to haul off the trash and personal belongings left by tenants  in his rental house. The homeowner produced receipts where he paid Hudgins $100 to clean the house and $65 to “I Stand Alone Hauling” for the trash removal.

Hudgins told the FWC officer that they transported the first load of trash back to her trailer park where they filled a dumpster with a mattress and other items. The second load was taken to the Pipes landing area along the Perdido River, near Jacks Branch Road in Cantonment.

When the FWC and Baldwin County (Ala.) Sheriff’s deputies located Murphy at his home in Lillian, Ala., he admitted that he was hired off Craigslist to remove the trash for $65, and that it was his idea to dump it in the area of The Pipes.

Sakilvan told the FWC officer that he was “held hostage” by Murphy and had no other option but to go along with the plan. He expressed concern that charges would cost him the chance to obtain U.S. citizenship, and he volunteered to clean up the trash “to ease his conscience”. Officers verified that Sakilvan had indeed removed the rubbish and paid to dump 1,060 pounds at the Perdido landfill.

Sakivan and Hudgins were released from the Escambia County Jail on $2,000 bond each. Murphy was arrested in Baldwin County on an outstanding parole violation warrant. Murphy remains in the Baldwin County Corrections Center without bond.

    REGARDING:
“Um David, it’s not all about you. ”

Not all about me???? Not all about ???? DOES NOT COMPUTE. DOES NOT COMPUTE.

“Did you read all the posts? THAT was were my comments were directed.”

You mean the ones which looked at three people and concentrated on the one from elsewhere?

“Thanks for your scipture references, I’m glad you are a believer as am I. Jesus often reached out to the lowly and downtrodden offering forgiveness and spoke harshly to the crowds and pharisees who offered nothing but judgement. And THAT was my point. ”

I don’t expect to change minds here but I simply cannot stand to have my words twisted”

that’s why I corrected from herd to mob

People keep acting like Jesus’ words were always pleasant and sweet, but a big part of his message was they were on the wrong path and headed to hotter climes. Hatred, judgment untempered with mercy. Many say here what they would know was rude to say face to face but then they feel free to express the thought of the moment here, too.

I forget which President it was who said it but at least one stated it was good fro people to be free to speak because then the fools would be shown up.

Gotta go, time for church, best wishes

    sorry, not “herd” but “mob”

  5. David Huie Green on February 12th, 2011 9:23 pm

nor did I call them trash or suggest they be deported, just didn’t see why the truth about what Jesus is reported to have said and done should be rejected.

I’m not sure it’s a herd mentality but the idea that people should comply with laws isn’t really evil as long as those laws don’t hurt others. I assume they have a hard time understanding people leaving some other place to come here to say our laws are stupid and only fit to be ignored. it’s not really bigotry as I see it.

    David for good neighbors

  6. Linda on February 12th, 2011 7:59 pm

Give me a break … Jesus didn’t call people “trash.” Jesus didn’t say that certain people should be deported because they weren’t from his country. We all know there is a mob mentality going on here. I grew up in the area. Fortunately I was raised by Christian parents who raised me with good morals and values. Believe it or not the year is 2011 not 1950 or 1960 or 1970 and we have become enlightened … it’s really not okay to be a racist or a bigot anymore. That crap is inbred and perpetuated and it’s time to stop the insanity! There simply is no excuse to be so rude and ignorant of proper social behavior.
    I’m done here.

    Just an old soldier,

    I try to help

David remembering the first time I heard it too
although I never memorized it, just remembered
how it went on and on with amazing detail

  8. David Huie Green on February 12th, 2011 3:07 pm

    REGARDING:
“Jesus would not be name calling “

He called people evil and snakes:
“O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” -Matthew 12:34
(the same thing John The Baptist called them)

    and called Peter Satan:
“But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.” -Matthew 16:23
    (although He forgave him)

and of course referred to Judas Iscariot as a devil:
“Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?” -John 6:70
(a sad case, did what was needed, somehow killed himself two different ways out of regret)

So the question might be: Were the names accurate?
Which rephrased would be: Was Jesus wrong?

    David thinking those asking
    “What would Jesus Do?”
might be helped by reading what He did
one of which was die for sinners

    Wow – it did!

  10. Just An Old Soldier on February 12th, 2011 11:49 am

Thanks for the reminder! It’s still as funny as the first time I heard it. :) (wondering if this “smiley” thing works)

  11. Linda on February 11th, 2011 10:18 pm

I stand by my comments. Just because it is the local culture to behave a certain way and name call does not make it right in the eyes of God. Jesus would not be name calling and those who do should be ashamed and repent. It’s never too late to show compassion and forgiveness as our Lord and Savior does.

    FROM ALICE’S RESTAURANT:

We got up there, we found all the garbage in there, and we decided it’d be a friendly gesture for us to take the garbage down to the city dump. So we took the half a ton of garbage, put it in the back of a red VW microbus, took shovels and rakes and implements of destruction and headed on toward the city dump. Well we got there and there was a big sign and a chain across across the dump saying, “Closed on Thanksgiving.” And we had never heard of a dump closed on Thanksgiving before, and with tears in our eyes we drove off into the sunset looking for another place to put the garbage. We didn’t find one. Until we came to a side road, and off the side of the side road there was another fifteen foot cliff and at the bottom of the cliff there was another pile of garbage. And we decided that one big pile is better than two little piles, and rather than bring that one up we decided to throw our’s down. That’s what we did, and drove back to the church, had a thanksgiving dinner that couldn’t be beat, went to sleep and didn’t get up until the next morning, when we got a phone call from officer Obie. He said, “Kid, we found your name on an envelope at the bottom of a half a ton of garbage, and just wanted to know if you had any information about it.” And I said, “Yes, sir, Officer Obie, I cannot tell a lie, I put that envelope under that garbage.”

  13. Just An Old Soldier on February 11th, 2011 11:45 am

I am reminded of a song written by Arlo Gutrie, Jr….”Alice’s Restaurant”.

Seems there was a verse or two about the illegal dumping of garbage and the search that turned up a letter to the defendant, “Yes Sir, Your Honor, I _put_ that letter under that great big pile of garbage” (probably badly misquoted here, with apologies).

Sorry, I know this is a serious problem, but it did strike my funny bone.

  14. David Huie Green on February 9th, 2011 5:13 pm

bet he doesn’t do that again

  15. Horrific on February 9th, 2011 3:51 pm

    Good Linda
I thought you were the same Linda and was sorely disappointed in another
    animal rights person like myself.
    Thanks

  16. LINDA on February 9th, 2011 3:05 pm

Yikes, just want to clarify the comments made by “Linda” are not by the Linda who normally posts about animal welfare issues and our government. II’ll draw my own fire, thank you very much! If the dude is truly here legally, breaking the law (held hostage – really? Really?) by littering should count against him when the time comes for any decisions to be made about staying or going. Nice that he eased his conscience by picking it up – would he have done that if they hadn’t been caught? Can only imagine how trash is handled in his home country, so this probably wasn’t much of a stretch to go dumpin’ with these two fine folks. On the bright side, I guess these pillars of the community weren’t running a meth lab like the Muscogee Road boys. Trash is as trash does.

  17. Horrific on February 9th, 2011 11:04 am

By the way Mr Sakilvan, if you do get to stay here and someone ever holds you
hostage again and makes you do something a grown man doesn’t want to do
the number to call is 911.

  18. Horrific on February 9th, 2011 10:57 am

    I am totally with pm.
As for the guy from turkey. If you are lucky enough to come here from turkey
you should learn the language and all the laws and abide by every single one
of them because it IS a priviledge to live here for him not a right.
As for Linda saying if you say anything you should be ashamed. Maybe linda
you should not try so hard to shame american citizens who have not broken
your laws and let the chips fall where they may and stop trying to take away
our amendment rights and let this guy walk all over our laws.
Of course he is sorry and made haste to clean up his act, wouldn’t you.
Thats why most criminals repent and suddenly find GOD, then when they
get out they just hurt someone and go right back to jail. DUH!.
TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THINE OWN SELF.

    For barrineau;

“I beg to differ, when you or I get pulled over law enforcement fines us right then and there. And yes so does FWC, if you are cought with a beer your fined, if you speed on state property your fined if you fish without a license your fined. I would think if you litter or dump trash you would be fined as well.Or maybe I’m nut’s.”

Law enforcement does NOT fine you, the court does. Law enforcement issues a citation with a court date. If you choose to forfeit your day in court, you may pay the fine instead of attending your hearing and presenting evidence.

  20. VISITOR on February 9th, 2011 8:39 am

I don’t know any of these people, but I do know that by Mr. Sakivan’s actions of cleaning up the mess and paying for the dump he has more character than some of the people that live in our communities that were born in America. I think he deserves a chance to have a future here. I do however think he should find better friends to hang out with though. We had a friend from Turkey that came to work here for a few years. He was the nicest guy and helped anyone he could. He worked as a truck driver, slept in his truck to save money and sent almost all of his money home to his family.

  21. Linda on February 9th, 2011 7:47 am

The negative comments about deporting the Turkish man are uncalled for. He expressed remorse and made it right. For all we know he took the others at their word that the trash would be taken to the proper place. All these calls for deporting and namecalling come from a small minded bigoted place. Listen to yourselves and be ashamed.

  22. Proud American on February 8th, 2011 10:20 pm

Some of you “non patriots” should take careful note of the actions of this Turkish fellow. He is so fearful of deportation or other action that he totally cleans up the trash.
He knows that the place he came from is so infinitly WORSE than where he now resides that he wants to assure he won’t be asked to leave. All of you who want to punish this fellow should take another look. We were privileged to be born here. This guy is an example of those who were not. We are so effing spoiled that freedom has almost lost it’s meaning. Wait till you see what it’s like when that’s gone.

  27. Paul on February 8th, 2011 12:04 pm

A litterbug is one of the lowest form of life. Anybody caught littering should be forced to pick up ten times the amount of their trash.

  28. RE on February 8th, 2011 11:42 am

What a lucky break that in this instance the culprits were found. I believe many people believe littering is acceptable. The area around the “Forever Wild” site in Lillian (set aside as AL State Lands) is also used as a dumping ground for old items. Beer cans everywhere, right now a large blue tarp is floating in the canal next to the remains of a deer. The tarp was obviously used to drag the animal out of the woods. If you don’t need it anymore, toss it!!!!

It would be interesting to know if any one of the three had the proper occupational liscence to do this type of work in Escambia County, Also, if this was an ongoing enterprise were they paying the proper state, local and federal taxes on the money they “earned” . Maybe Mr.Murphy’s parole will be revoked and he will be sent back to prison where he obviously belongs. As for Ms. Hudgins she proved that she is not a responsible citizen just by hanging out with the trash she was involved with. As for the turkey — Let him return to Turkey, as he has admitted he has no respect for our laws or the environment. Kind of reminds me of the sond – NOTHING BUT TRASH. TRASH. TRASH.

  30. concerned citizen on February 8th, 2011 11:25 am

These people just don’t care.. I’ll bet their homes are filthy and littered with trash also! I am glad that they are facing felony charges.. Maybe now they will clean up their act..

  31. Jack on February 8th, 2011 11:13 am

“Not sure why a fine wasn’t given”
Maybe cause they haven’t been to court yet. Law enforcement doesn’t fine people.

I was born and raised on this river, and this stuff has always been a problem. It is one of the most beautiful rivers in this area, unfortunately some people just dont care.My family and i usualy bring a buckett to pick up trash when we canoe. Good job FWC.Not sure why a fine wasn’t given.

Keep your trash to yourself ,,,,,TRASH IS TRASH!!!!!!!!! Go Down River Annex and see what you can find ,,,,

I wish folks would knock off with the references to “trailer trash.” I have never lived in a trailer, but have family and friends that did and some that do live in trailers. Most are very good folks, and if you knew them, you would be ashamed (hopefully) of making derogatory remarks about them. How would you feel? In my opinion you are as bad as the folks you believe you are referring to when you do this. THINK.

  37. Carolyn Bramblett on February 8th, 2011 7:28 am

If that fellow came over from Turkey and these are the people he already hangs with then he should be sent home packing. We already have enough of these kind of people here.

  38. xpeecee on February 8th, 2011 6:11 am

Me thinks that some of the trash did not make it to the dump…..

  39. unbeweavable on February 8th, 2011 4:15 am

How appropriate that you were able to use the words Hudgins, trash and trailer park in the same sentence.
