Insanity Defense Planned For Accused Bandit With Underwear On His Head

February 10, 2011

The trial of a Molino man accused of robbing a Molino pharmacy last year while wearing underwear on his head has been delayed as his attorney prepares an insanity defense.

Joseph Daniel Flowers, now 57,  is facing multiple charges for the September 20, 2010, robbery of Scott’s Pharmacy, including  robbery with a firearm, possession of a firearm in a pharmacy, aggravated battery  and wearing a mask while committing a felony. Multiple drug possession charges were later filed against Flowers in connection with the case.

Flowers’ trial had been scheduled to begin next Monday, but was delayed last week when Flowers’ attorney notified the court that he intends to rely on an insanity defense, according to Escambia County Clerk of the Court records. The State Attorney’s Office has filed a motion to prevent the use of the  insanity defense. Flowers is scheduled to appear again in court in early March.

Flowers was charged with robbing Scott’s Pharmacy on September 20, 2010 while wearing a bathrobe, slippers, yellow kitchen gloves and underwear on his head. He has remained in the Escambia County Jail after a November arrest for failure to appear.

Flowers is also facing charges for the alleged battery of his accomplice — Krystal Lynn Collins — with a two liter bottle of Coke. Collins, 24, was also charged in connection with the robbery; deputies believe she was the getaway car driver.  Collins is also due to be in court in early March.

Do you not think that IF he did rob this pharmacy, which he has used for 15 plus years that perhaps he must have been out of his mind? I mean come on.. what was done was wrong, but this man is very sick.

You’d have to be crazy to use the insanity defense.

Well, you wouldn’t HAVE to, but it would surely help

  3. dick tracy on February 12th, 2011 4:15 am

Bob, just tell your brother to plead guilty………you’ve got to be related somehow…….

  4. Bob on February 11th, 2011 10:05 pm

You just can’t make up this kind of stuff…but you can expect it as mainstream from Bama fans.

Yeah …I’d have to say robbing a pharmacy or any other place is at least a little insane.

alright, here comes my tasteless humor on this story—

(poking fun @ the mentally incompetent, the addicted, the too-hard-for-their-own-good-partiers, & those underwear fetishists out there, pushing political correctness beyond the pale…)

Ok, the “Underwear Bandit” Had To Be Crazy to party so hard that he thought it was a disguise choice to display his undergarment fetish to the world during the commission of a felony.

    Thank you, Goodnight, Everybody!!!

An attempt at humor – these posts reminded me of the Waylon Jennings song – “I’ve Always Been Crazy, But It Keeps Me From Going Insane”.
No, I don’t believe for a minute that this guy is “insane” . He is a crook and should be punished.

  9. JIM W on February 10th, 2011 2:42 pm

Insane! NOT! He knew exactly what he was doing. Now he needs to pay the price.

  10. Ha!! on February 10th, 2011 2:08 pm

If he wasn’t crazy he might be insane!!!

  11. David Huie Green on February 10th, 2011 2:07 pm

one of the good things about the insanity defense is that you must admit you committed the crime to apply it.

  12. Whatever on February 10th, 2011 12:19 pm

Doing stupid things while you are high doesn’t constitute insanity. Unfortunately the court doesn’t recognize the “stupid” defense or he could use that. I am sure the court will see this for what it is, a last ditch effort to not take responsibility for his actions. Hope he gets the maximum sentence for his crimes.

” And when you think about it, aren’t all law breakers, drug dealers, murderers, robbers…..insane anyway. ”

Shae, no they are not all insane. Think about it. Have you EVER driven past the posted speed limit? If so, then you are breaking the law. Does that make you insane?
I get what you’re saying though, I just had to point that out.

    I’m w/Horrific.. I take my meds cuz “I’M A BIG GIRL NOW!!!

  16. shae on February 10th, 2011 9:38 am

It takes thought preparation to dress out like he did and take a gun with him, and get someone to drive him there. Sounds insanely smart to me. And when you think about it, aren’t all law breakers, drug dealers, murderers, robbers…..insane anyway. I don’t think this is a viable plea for anyone.

    REGARDING:
“all drug addicts are insane,,,duh. but does that give all drug addicts the right to run around like whackadoodles with guns threatening and disrupting civil society?”

I don’t know that all of them are insane, especially since nicotine addiction is a drug addiction, but those who go around like this probably fit the bill. Thus, treating them as violent nutjobs is reasonable.

Perhaps doctors will be able to figure out which parts of the brain to remove to do away with the violent tendencies, at which point what remains could be released.

David for trusting him that he needs brain work

all drug addicts are insane,,,duh. but does that give all drug addicts the right to run around like whackadoodles with guns threatening and disrupting civil society? i dont think so. throw the book at him!

  19. Walnut Hill Roy on February 10th, 2011 8:00 am

If he gets off on an insanity plea he will get less time than the girl who drove him there. No need to assult her with a soda bottle when you can do an exellent job of it in court.

  20. hawghead on February 10th, 2011 7:53 am

Let’s see I need to plan ahead just in case this goes wrong. I know I can wear some underware on my head and walk in with a robe on. That way if I get caught I can tell everyone I’m insane…………..IDIOT………..

  21. WORRIED RESIDENT on February 10th, 2011 7:39 am

Insanity to commit a robbery? That’s INSANE!!!!

  22. David Huie Green on February 10th, 2011 7:37 am

    it’s a good defense

  23. bama54 on February 10th, 2011 7:36 am

I grew up around Danny in Atmore, and to my knowledge it has always been someone else fault, or he did not meant to do it. The case being now is I did not know what I was doing. It is always something about him to put the blame on someone or something else. I guess he will get out of this one to, and a few years down the road we will be reading about him again. I am just glad know one got hurt at Scott’s.

  24. Jim Stanton on February 10th, 2011 7:15 am

Well this is one jury I wouldn’t be allow on. I’ve been on jury duty several times, and when ask about the insanity plea, I tell the attorney that’s an automatic guilty as far as I’m concerned.

  25. Horrific on February 10th, 2011 7:10 am

Stand up and take your medicine you big baby.
You took a gun and put it in hard working girls faces and said
you would mind killing them AND ASKED FOR DRUGS. NOW stand up ADMIT AND TAKE YOUR MEDICINE.
JUST ANOTHER SPOILED ROTTEN DRUG ADDICT.

  26. dirtroadninja on February 10th, 2011 6:09 am

So insanity not drug addict? I don’t think so he could have killed someone. I am sick of these addicts he should get a long prision sentence too bad a judge will slap him on the wrist, you just watch.

  27. Mary on February 10th, 2011 4:50 am

I dont believe it for a minute!!
