Deputies Develop Suspect In Weekend Century Double Shooting
February 28, 2011
Deputies have identified a suspect in a double shooting over the weekend in Century as their investigation progresses today.
According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, someone opened fire about 2 a.m. Saturday at the Town of Century’s Habitat Building on East Pond Street. Ieshia Mitchell, 20, of Century, was hit in the left knee and later airlifted to a Pensacola hospital, and 19-year old Register Yelder of Atmore was shot in the leg. Stacy O’Neal Johnson, 18, of Atmore, was injured when he was hit in the head with a bottle during the incident.
Sheriff’s investigators have identified a suspect in the case, and they are in the process of obtaining an arrest warrant for the individual, according to spokesperson Sena Maddison. The suspect, she said, will face a felony charge of firing into a crowd.
Deputies say a gun was recovered at the scene, but they are not yet sure if it is the weapon used in the shooting while 75 to 125 people were at the early morning party.
Further details have not been released by the Sheriff’s Office.
Anyone with information about the double shooting is asked to call Gulf Coast Crime Stoppers at (850) 433-STOP or the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office at (850) 436-9620.

REGARDING:
“how the heck can their parents tell them what to do or where to go please answer that”
Telling children what to do and where to go is easy; you just do it. My 80 year old mother can do it to me.
Then it’s up to the children–of whatever age–do listen to their parents. If they respect them, they will. If they don’t respect their mother and/or father, their age doesn’t matter. The parents either earned their children’s respect by then or they didn’t.
David for honoring
your father and your mother
ummmm 18 19 20 year olds an up r consider adults no they r not legal to drink but how the heck can their parents tell them what to do or where to go please answer that for the ones saying its the parents fault
@ just tired ,You what I am just tired of? Yes you do.
To puddin, where did you receive your education? It should be “Anyone who has spent any amount of time in Century, etc….., not “Anyone that’s spent any time….
I think the real question should be this: If the individual who perpetrated this act is caught, why is he/she only going to be charged with firing into a crowd? Every bullet that flew should be one count of attempted murder! If not, then at least the two that actually hit people should be. Perhaps that would deter our youth from being so quick to pull a trigger. Oh, and by the way, yes, you can blame the parents, to an extent, because the parents should be more involved and know what their children are into and who is expected to be around when they get into it. It’s not easy, but it’s called good parenting. The only problem with that is that the only ages listed were 18, 19, and 20. These are not kids and why were they at a “teen party” to begin with. These 3 individuals are adults and should have only been at a “teen party” to chaperone!
Little B……..I think we can agree now!!!
@AWOT I guess I shoud have said if and when. But that would suit you more than me. Never the less, Century is not a lost cause. I agree with you that there are problems, and you hit the nail on the head describing these problems. Still I maintain that there many wonderfull souls in this town and most do not deserve this ridicule. Really? Driving around Century to get to I-65?… That was not nice. ….
And back to the topic, you are right. And I agree that the town of Century should not give these incidenceslike this a place to happen. Especially not without ground rules . I remember the days when Century was in the news because the baseball or basketball teams went to state playoffs, and the football team was a powerhouse. I am proud to be from Century. Surely you weren’t talking about me.
@brown
Your whole statement proves everything all the other statements were saying about uneducated. If you want to defend your community disprove what’s being said…just saying.
@Waist of time the only problem wither brown’s state was on line 5…really?
its atmore ppl gang members cmen down hea starting trouble if someone coudl put a stop to it it wouldnt be so bad around century but if they dont stop them its just gone keep goin on watch an see cuz its a rival thing why do atmore guys come into century when they know they dont get along it just dont make sense!!!!!!!!!!!
Little B you are living in a dream world if you think Century’s reputation will improve. Parents have no control over the influences in their childrens lives. When women and men all over the nation ( and it is not just in Century) decide they are going to raise their children in a Christian environment, and that means marrying and staying married to one person and having both parents involved in the kids lives. It means not having 4 kids out of wedlock, with 4 different fathers. This goes for both black and white folks. You might start seeing some improvement in society. Being a good parent is a hard job. It means telling your kids they cant go here or there. It is easy to be a bad parent. I am sure that this will get some negative comments. Oh, and back on the topic. You mix alcohol with about 75 to 120 young adults and under age kids drinking, you are asking for problems.
Everyone wants to blame the parents for the kids these days its not the parents fault !! The kids are going to make there own the decsions and choices !! Parents teach kids right from wrong its the childs choice to make the decsions !! So dont blame the parents !!
please two wrongs don’t make a right let’s pray that thing changes//////
To all you Century haters, I have heard funnier jokes. Everyone from Century is not an illiterate druggie. I think you know this.
To all you Century defenders, use the spell check. And pick your battles. You are not going to change anyones mind.
To all you folks from Atmore, you should be glad your crime is not flashed on the screen. You don’t have any room to talk. NONE AT ALL
@Thinker!!!<Didn't your resume' say sometheng about being a corrections officer and a juvenile probation officer? I doesn't make sense to say "Deal with it" to parents concerned about drugs at a party. Especiall when you have seen the damage done when kids use drugs and have bad influences. You don't need a book to tell you this. Century's reputation will improve when parents have more control of the influences in thier child's life. There are alot of good people in Century, and even more that would like to do better.
@Thinker,
What about church? That is where we used to do alot of our socializing when I was young. There is something going on at a church in the area at least every other week when weather permits. I have even have big teenage parties at my house. Every child called his/her parents when they got here, and again when they left. No drugs, no alcohol, no guns, no agenda, just people who want to spend time and have fun with other people. To not worry about kids being around druggies would be stupid and irresponsible as a parent. Being a caring parent, and a guy who married too young has been a wondful life for me.
firing into a crowd for crying out loud. definite jail time and while they do the time, why not put them to work at the park putting in that hiking trail. betcha he and some of his prison buddies could get that knocked out in no time.
I’m glad you don’t live is Century too. And Another Waist of Time, you certainly are. Do you folk think that you can move away from illiteracy? Are your neighbors smarter than mine? You are pretty darn likely to have someone in your family that you are not so proud of. Go ahead and talk down to Centurions if it makes you feel good. To me, it makes you look like a jerk.
I agree with you “Glad I dont live in Century” Brown I only saw one typo. It was down on line 5. keep Atmore where they is, is what you were trying to say. Remind me to drive around Century when I need to go to Interstate 65. This would not have happened if they would not have shut down Century High School. ya no what i’m sayin!!!!!!!!!!
Social centers are necessary. Robberies happen at stores and people are shot in them also. They don’t close THEM down. Better security by folks who TALK to participants and understand when trouble is brewing…that’s something that might be needed. There’s no place for kids to socialize in Brewton or just about any place, around North Escambia because people are so paranoid about drugs and other bad stuff. Deal with it, I say. Give our young folks some play before they marry too young, etc. You can’t protect them forever.
LOL YA THINK!
“frist of all son’t talk about the people in century i you don’t live here because you really don’t know what going on here. we have alot of smart people here that are or went somewhere. if atmore would’nt come down here with all that blood vs. crips stuff we would’nt have this problem because are no gangs in century. yes of them do act like they don’t have since but not all of them. keep atmore where they are and then we can have peaceful parties and not hae to worry about get shot up all the time. and whoever wrote all thea stuff about century i kno you don’t live here so don’t talk about it like you do. i bet you have kids in your town that are bad and do’t want to listen to the parent or just stupid to maybe your kids i mean who knows. because you not going to put that on there anyway………..so sad”
I think this pretty much answers any questions about the level of education.
frist of all son’t talk about the people in century i you don’t live here because you really don’t know what going on here. we have alot of smart people here that are or went somewhere. if atmore would’nt come down here with all that blood vs. crips stuff we would’nt have this problem because are no gangs in century. yes of them do act like they don’t have since but not all of them. keep atmore where they are and then we can have peaceful parties and not hae to worry about get shot up all the time. and whoever wrote all thea stuff about century i kno you don’t live here so don’t talk about it like you do. i bet you have kids in your town that are bad and do’t want to listen to the parent or just stupid to maybe your kids i mean who knows. because you not going to put that on there anyway………..so sad
they definitely wont find them around here goo to ATMORE!! thats where they at
It’s not just the kids in that small area who on’t stand a chance. What about the kids in the “better” parts of town whose parents don’t know how to read or write? Just how well do you think those kids are going to do in school? And what happens when these same kids reach middle school or so and then have no respect for their parents because they are “stupid” and assume that they are better than and know more than their parents because after all, their parents couldn’t even learn how to read and write so how could they possibly know anything about life? These kids are going to be dropouts. They will have no parents helping them with homework or pushing them to do a good job and, well, we all know how that story ends.
@puddin—- wow, I can not believe someone had the guts to speak up. Everything you said is so true. The children growing up there don’t stand a chance. Its like they don’t want to “better” themselves. Keep the status quo…..so sad….century, get out of the party business, before you get in some serious trouble
@ puddin.
Say it like it is, Puddin. I’m with you…
Century’s town government will never learn from its own mistakes and short comings and it will continue allow these types of activities to go on, but for what a few bucks? I’m sorry, but booze and young people only equal trouble. So if the town wants to get into the local water’n hole entertainment business in its public buildings, at least it should require some type of security to protect the town’s interest (that is if Century really has any.).
It’s not the location/building. It’s the people. Anyone that’s spent any time in Century, at all, knows that the Pond/Jefferson loop, and Ramar st. areas are beyond dangerous. When School bus drivers are afraid to take the children home because the parents may beat the beans out of them. (happened twice in the last several years). Warrington area and Wedgewood aren’t that dangerous. Let’s clean that mess up. Put the criminals in jail and leave them there. Or better yet, lets raze the entire 3-5 blocks. Take the little kids who haven’t been corrupted yet, and put them with intelligent people who will teach them right and offer them opportunities to grow into contributing adults… You get the idea.
How many news worthy events have happened at this location?
Why is this facility still being maintained and operated?
