Bad Brake Light Leads To Drug Bust

February 16, 2011

A broken brake light led to two people being arrested on felony narcotics charges in Century.

Deputy Nate Mortenson conducted an early morning traffic stop on a Buick driven by Maurice Austin, 22, of Century, after he noticed a brake light that was not working as Austin came to a stop at West Highway 4 and North Century Boulevard.

After getting consent to search the vehicle, deputies located pills they identified as prescription narcotics and cocaine, according to an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

Austin was charged with  felony possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, felony possession of crack cocaine and driving with no license. He was also issued a traffic citation for the non-working brake light. He was released from the Escambia County Jail on $2,500 bond.

A passenger in the vehicle, Hannah Joyce Campbell, 19, of Century, was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. She was released from the Escambia County Jail on $1,000 bond.

There are consequences to actions! I’ve seen enough to where I have little to no sympathy for those who break the law. The girl is 19 years old; she is old enough to know right from wrong. Each need to suffer the consequences for his and her actions.

Peolple r rude and crazy blaming her mom. I know her mom and no matter how you try to raise a child .They never turn out like you raised them. My granny was a preacher and had a whine o for a husband and 7 children that have all done wrong .Its not the parents fault she dont walk a strait line .And the town of century is no help either.

OMG, will this child never learn? She should have seen enough to know that this path only leads to heartbreak and pain.

If you’re gonna do drugs, STAY AT HOME AND WATCH TV!!! Don’t drive around!

You can’t hurt anybody else (or go to jail for that matter) if you’re sitting on your couch eating potato chips and flipping channels.

The minute you decide to go somewhere in your car, you’re a danger and a threat to innocent people.

Just stay home! PLEASE! THE LIFE YOU SAVE MAY BE MY LOVED ONES.

It is what it is. They are both adults and made the choice to do what they did. Can’t blame mom and dad or society. Depending on the judge as to how their fate plays out.

Most likely probation with a plead down and they are back out in business.

    Good job by the deputy.

Want to stimulate the economy: Require illegal drug and firearms dealers to purchase a county occupational license and state tax number. As long as their paying their fair share of taxes who cares what business they are in.

We already have a similar stimilus pending. It’s called the health care bill.

All these comments about her parents, surely they are not who I think they are, because if they are…

Wow! Those two are wiped out on drugs look at their faces. Amazing they were able to function. That is a scarey thing to think about and then operating a auto on top of everything else. Just another premier example of how drugs are taking pver our children. I feel for the families and all their friends. Sure hope these to get help and get on the right path.

I dont feel at all sorry for her parents, maybe if they would have beat her butt when she was younger and actually paid attention to the things that she done she wouldnt be down this road in life. Not saying at all this is all there fault and I know we choose our own way in this world but it all stems from when we were younger and what we have been taught and actuallly learned. We see this girl all the time either on here or in the TRI-CITY you would think they would try to keep her alittle longer. And for the guy I went to middle school with this kid and havent seen of him since until now, but he was trouble then sure doesnt shock me about this now.

Well I hope someone else drove them both home because they both
look like they’re still too high.
They both need a big time wake up call but they probably won’t get it.

22 and 19…welcome to the wonderful world of ” The system” .You are in it now and it will VERY hard to get out. Riding around with no license,a broken tail light ,drugs on you and told the deputy to search,I guess thats why they call it the DOPE game.

  16. xpeecee on February 16th, 2011 8:06 am

I really feel badly for her parents. I’m sure they are going through the grieving process…

  17. xpeecee on February 16th, 2011 7:53 am

    @ Freddy

Yep, your mother was correct. The situation that we see here has to be the greatest pain this girl could deliver. Unforgivable? You bet!!!

  18. Freddy on February 16th, 2011 7:38 am

xpeecee> Don’t you know her mama proud!!!

My mother always said that children are a pain.
When their little their stepping on your toes.
When they grow up their stepping on your Heart.
    Bout right huh.

    Yung and Dum…….
(before anyone comments on it – yes the misspelling was intentional)
    Good work LEO.
Some are under the mistaken idea that if you tell a cop he can search your car, he won’t.
The looks on their faces crack me up.
