Atmore Wreck Kills Pensacola Man, Injures Four Others

February 20, 2011

A Pensacola motorcyclist was killed in a two vehicle accident that injured four other people Friday night in Atmore.

Carl Edward, Deleo, Jr., 45, was pronounced dead at Atmore Community Hospital following the accident about 10 p.m. Highway 21 at Sunset Drive. Deleo and Elizabeth Rucker, 60, of Pensacola, were thrown from their Honda Gold Wing in the crash. Rucker was transported by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital. Her condition was not available.

Authorities said it appeared a pickup truck driven by Robert Ear Lee, 59, of Uriah, pulled into the path of the motorcycle as it was northbound on Highway 21, according to Alabama State Troopers. The force of the crash caused the pickup truck to overturn onto its side.

Otis Lanell Jackson, 38, of Uriah, Ala. and Malika Moore, 24, of Uriah were transported by ambulance to a Bay Minette, Ala., hospital.  Lee, 59, was transported to the USA Medical Center in Mobile. Two other people in the truck received minor injuries.

Further details were not available as the Alabama State Troopers continued their investigation into the crash.

I was with Carl DeLeo Jr. riding the Honda Goldwing 1985 with lots of LED lights everything was calm and I saw what happened. There was no hill. There was a STOP sing also, the driver of the truck did not STOP obviously. Carl’s motto to me “I won’t let anything happen to you” he wouldn’t speed since this his ‘old lady’ don’t like speed and he loved me dearly. My heart goes out to the family of Mr. Robert E. Lee.

Carl was a great guy and caring father. He was the best Mechanic that believed in helping people and not robbing them. He will be truly missed. I just found out of his death when I went by his house to visit him today. His daughter is torn apart, and my prayers goes out to Liz his partner for many years, and he loved her dearly. Carl, told me last month, the God Lord had a plan for his life, He just didn’t know. Rest in peace Carl, You treated everybody right and you didn’t see color. I know because I am an African American Friend of Carl. He will be truly missed.

Carl was my neighbor and a good friend of mines father. When i saw that it had tipped the truck i was very surprised, but i can still almost guarantee that he was not speeding. He was a very considerate and careful motorcyclist and this saddens me greatly. He will be greatly missed and i pray for everyone who is involved.

Accidents happen…that’s why they call them accidents! Pray for everyone and their family. I gave up riding my motorcycle after a minor accident…I realized how vulnerable you are on the road.

  10. doofus on February 20th, 2011 8:02 pm

How can you not see a motorcycle at 10 o’clock at night??? Goldwings are lit up big time.

My family member was involve in this accident ( my uncle ) I agree we should look out for others my heart and prayers goes out to everyone, @ Jerry, for you to be so crule and judgemental is unreal. My uncle is in USA hospital with all his ribs broken, puncture liver, lungs, kidney and swelling of the brains, I’m not making any accuses for anyone, but I never heard of a motorcycle doing that much damage going the speed limited. We should be praying for the Deleo family that God keep them and comfort them in their time of sorrow, And that God keep his hands and sheild around Ms.Rucker and also my uncle, Accidents can happen ( they shouldn’t but they do ) But none of us are perfect WE All are going to make mistake because we are HUMANS!! God bless…

I used to own motocycles and ride and one time i was stopped at an intersection and didn’t see anything coming both ways and started pulling out and the frame between my 2 doors on the right blocked me from seeing the motorcycle. Did not hit him but was close so sometimes just little things can block you from seeing them

  13. Big Frank on February 20th, 2011 11:22 am

Just for info ! The man on the bike was a friend of a friend who told me this man was a older biker who was know to be very careful and a driver of the speed limit the lady who was riding with him was in her sixties she is in Mobile infermery I don’t know her condition as of yet, but be praying for her as well ! Thank you !

  14. OldMarine on February 20th, 2011 11:19 am

A lot of speculation on here but the fact remains that the truck driver killed the man on the Motorcycle illegally
he will probably pay a small fine

  15. Big Frank on February 20th, 2011 11:15 am

My Prayers go out to the families of all involved ! I’m sure that not one of them had a thought their day would end this way! I’m a biker , truck driver, equipment operator , and the one thing I see is that we as people tend to get to many dictractions going on while operating vechicals that should have our full attention! You have friends, kids. cell phones, and 2way radios pulling our attention away from driving ! Not to mention all the things were thinking about , our concerns ,worries, todo list, relationship problems , ect ! We can blame each other and point the finger at this and that , but that won’t stop people from running over each other ! The only thing that will help is getting our attention back to driving when behind the wheel and stop dividing our attention! That will save lives! The truth is most accident are caused by not paying attention! Facts are facts! God Bless!

@ Jerry, I noticed that it said the force of the crash caused the pickup truck to over turn. This could be another case similar to where a motorcyclist was killed near my house about 15 years ago. A pickup truck pulled into the path of the motorcyclist here to. At the time the truck pull onto the road, the motorcycle was nowhere in sight, he was on the other side of a hill. It was estimated that the motorcycle was doing between 120-140 MPH, the speed limit is 35. After the investigation there were no charges filed since the motorcycle was doing almost 4 times the legal speed limit and there was no way the driver of the truck could have known the he was on the other side of the hill. I guess you would like to see charges filed in a case like this also, even if you were the driver of the truck?

  17. Paul on February 20th, 2011 10:48 am

I’ve been hit by cars three times, I’m very careful. If a person is drinking they get about 20 years for a DUI death, if they’re sober and on a cellphone it’s a $166. citation. Something is Wrong with that, sober people should be held accountable for their actions also.

  18. Jerry on February 20th, 2011 10:26 am

@Paul, In this case the driver can be charged with vehicular manslaughter. I do not know if he will or not, but according to the law, he certainly can be and in mu opinion he should be.

  19. David on February 20th, 2011 9:57 am

Careful Paul. You could make the next mistake.

  20. Paul on February 20th, 2011 9:06 am

People will never take driving seriously till Harsh penalties are put on these negligent drivers. The “it was an accident” is getting kinda old, we need to start locking them up and take away their driving “privileges”..R.I.P.

  21. gosh on February 20th, 2011 8:54 am

ya know what, yeah we should watch for motorcycles, but the other day in a parking lot! a motorcylist almost ran over me and my kid…so THEY also need to watch out! works both ways!
    sorry to hear this happened

  22. Know your neighbor on February 20th, 2011 4:03 am

It saddens my heart to hear this……PLEASE WATCH FOR MOTORCYCLES.
