Wind Hampers Fight Against Quintette Field Fire

January 13, 2011

Firefighters were in a battle against the wind to control a field fire Thursday near Highway 29 and Quintette Road.

A resident’s trash fire reportedly got out of control shortly after 11 a.m., setting a field on fire. Changing winds kept firefighters busy as the fire was pushed in different directions. No structures were damaged, and there were no injuries reported.

Well, my neighbor called Code Enforcement and told them that there was a man burning trash in my yard. They came out and checked. I told them there was no man, but, yes, I had burned trash earlier that day. They actually looked through the ashes to see what was there and said that they wouldn’t give me a ticket that day, but if they came out again and I was still burning it, I would get a ticket. He gave me a pamphlet that says that in the county, you can only burn limbs, straw and other yard debris but no wood or plywood, no wooden furniture, whatever. I told him that I’d been burning my trash in a barrel since I first bought my house and he said then I was lucky that nobody had called them on me before this. I told him that several of my neighbors burn theirs also and I never hear any complaints but I would no longer burn my trash.

Umm, no offense to the people, but Code Enforcement says that we can’t burn our own trash in our own yard and if I’m not mistaken, there’s been a burn ban for a while anyway. So WHY were they burning and WHY didn’t they stay right there by it to keep it from getting out of hand?

Will they be forced to pay the expenses for fighting the fire?
