Five Injured In Highway 29 Five Vehicle Crash

January 28, 2011

Five people were sent to the hospital and traffic was snarled for hours following a five-vehicle crash on Highway 29 Thursday night just south of Ten Mile Road.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Kallen Phillips, 32, of Cantonment was northbound in a 2003 Ford F150 just after 5 p.m. when he changed lanes and rear-ended a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Michael Horton, 47, of Birmingham. Horton and his passenger, Eddie Cassell, 41, of Homewood, Ala., were both transported in serious condition to Sacred Heart Hospital by LifeFlight.  Phillips was transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital with minor injuries.

The force of the initial impact pushed the vehicles forward, involving three other vehicles.

Driver Kimberly McGhee, 35, of Atmore, and a passenger in her 2005 Dodge Magnum, Madison McGhee, 13, were transported by private vehicle to Sacred Heart Hospital with minor injures. Two other passengers in the vehicle — Bryan McGhee, 37, and Braeden McGhee, 5 — were not injured.

Russell King, 61, of Pensacola was not injured when his 1995 Chevrolet Silverado was hit from behind.

Driver Nicole Boyd, 35, of Pensacola and her passengers Jalen Boyd, 10, and Amiya Boyd, 6, were not injured in the fifth vehicle in the crash.

Phillips, the driver of the vehicle that started the chain-reaction crash, was charged with careless driving, according to the FHP.

l was the driver of the third car (Dodge Magnum), which also had my husband in it and my 13yr and 5 yr , that was in the backseat. Thank God we are all ok, just sore. For GET OUT OF MY WAY, if thats the way you feel, then I feel real sorry for you. It will catch up with you and you will either be behind bars or out of alot of money. I’m prettty sure that Mr.Phillips didnt mean to hurt no one, but know his insurance is gonna be paying out alot of money, which means his premium will go up or they will drop him. They told me that my car was a total loss because the frame was bent, and i know that the car that hit us was a total loss. I feel so sorry for the two guys that was in that car, I know they was alot worse then me and my family, I’m glad it wasnt us though that he actually hit because my two children was in the back seat. And for the record “GET OUT OF MY WAY”, we was stopped at a red light and we was all in the RIGHT lane!!!

    REGARDING:
“This may seem contrary to common sense – but what is the point of having a 45 zone through a residential area like Hwy 29 is between about Detroit, just south of Nine Mile, and the Ten Mile Road if all scofflaws do is exceed the limit by 10 to 20 mph? ”

Considering the lack of residences along that stretch, what is the point of calling it a residential area?

This may seem contrary to common sense – but what is the point of having a 45 zone through a residential area like Hwy 29 is between about Detroit, just south of Nine Mile, and the Ten Mile Road if all scofflaws do is exceed the limit by 10 to 20 mph?

It’s especially congested around the Walmart. And once people get across the overpass, they just floor it like they’re NASCAR.

Why not reduce the limit to 35 mph? Even then a head-on collision would be devastating, but at 45 and above, well, that’s just a fatality waiting for someone like “get out of my way” to come along! At least the speeders would have to slow down to a mere 45 mph or so, but that would be slower than they are doing now.

What would it take to get that speed limit reduced for public safety? State DOT?

I’m real tired of drivers, well I mean MANIACS really, like “get out of my way” taking all her anger and frustration out on people that actually obey the traffic laws like decent citizens. These aggressive drivers are the root cause of most collisions, even the one car wrecks.

My father was involved in an accident in the exact same spot earlier in the day, he was on 10 mile crossing over 29 when a lady blew through the red light and hit him. He had to be transported by ambulance. He had minor injuries, she hit him going 55 mph. The trooper said if she would have hit his driver door she would have killed him. I pray for those in this accident. I feel something has to be done to slow people down.

The real problem is lack of lanes at times of high volumes of traffic. The FST’s ECSO’s have all sat on the side of the Hwy 29 and wrote tickets. You let anything happen on the 4 lane part of Hwy 29, like an accident, and you have a log jam for sure! In my opinion we stay 5 to 10 years behind on engineering of our highway systems in Escambia Co. Florida. Look at 9 mile road. They finally got the intersection of 9 mile and Hwy 29 just about right.

People, if you are not turning left, get out of the left hand lane! Use your turn signals, that is what they are there for. Be curtious, cautious and God bless.

This is exactly why I am glad I don’t have to travel “29″ twice a day any longer. And it’s exactly why I drove a big Titan. Not that I wanted to spend all that money on gas but it’s the only way to be safe out there. Just try to be as big and heavy as possible.

My prayers are with all the ones involved, hope everyone has a full & speedy recovery.

@ “Get out of my way”…people who think that way should NOT be on the road! There’s a thing called “driver’s education”, you must have missed that class.
It’s not that people are driving ’slow’…they are driving the POSTED SPEED LIMIT…it is not anyone elses fault you & others feel they have to speed~for what ever your reason!
Me & my husband were in a really bad wreck because of people like you that seem to thing they own the road to drive whatever speed cutting people off with no concern the cost to others. ~ I was going the speed limit, the guy couldn’t wait another 30 or so seconds for me to get past~and there was NO ONE behind me~he thought he had to jump out on the hwy right then…did he care what it cost us? NO! I was taken by ambulace and he had the nerve to try to get my husband to say he wasn’t the other driver! We lost our car, and could have lost our lives because of him…an idiot like YOU seem to be!!! I still, almost 7 weeks later, have almost no use of my hand & little use of that arm, done went through one surgery and facing months of therapy, and may end up facing another surgery…all this, and the guy still trying to plead he wasn’t driving trying to get out of trouble! I am just thankfull to God that we were not killed, everyone who’s seen the pics of my car are amazed that we are here & walking!
People like him & you need to be barred from driving! The speed limits, traffic lights, and stop signs are all there for a reason~not just to inconvienience you idiots!!!

You know I just don’t know how someone can even think like that after
looking at what an agressive driver with big truck just did to the back end
of that little car and the fact that he just read that two people in that car had to be life flighted. Boy oh Boy some people.

Looks like “Get out of my way” is a scoff-law and in a hurry to get to her next fatal accident.

Speed limits are there for a reason, reckless driving (should be called “wreckful”) is illegal, tailgating is illegal. Aggressive driving, like the poster admitted to here, is also illegal.

Hope you get your tickets and cool your jets before you kill yourself or someone else. And just so you know – that’s an area surrounded by homes, so there’s LOTS of folks that are turning LEFT off that stretch of highway to go home safely to their families.

    LOL Jane
Welcome to Escambia County where they drive like race track drivers and
hunt with every cop in town. They don’t write tickets to their friends or the
    other officers friends.
I watch officers go buy tailgaters and bullies on the road all the time.
    They don’t seeeeem to care.

  12. FED UP on January 29th, 2011 11:04 am

tg you beat me to it.
That guy needs to lose his license, with an attitude like that he is an accident
waiting to happen. I hope it isn’t my family he kills, but I assure you if it is I
will see that he gets the maximum sentence the law allows and I will appear
at every single early parole hearing and it won’t happen.
As far as I’m concerned he just threatened the general population of escambia
drivers that he will be a menace to them with a huge 5 ton weapon.
Too bad he can’t be charged for that threat or lose his license. I’m sick of the
bullies out there that act like that every single day.
They don’t take into account that some of us are coming up to where we
turn off 29 to the left to our street. We can’t do that from the right lane. He doesn’t
know, he doesn’t care. HE IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD WHO COUNTS.
I wonder if he is as selfish with his wife and kids. Must have a really great
    marriage.

Get out of my way you are an idiot. it is very much everyones business if you are driving like an idiot! Nobody forces anybody to weave in and out of traffic, and when people drive like nuts it is my business because you are putting my life and my family life at risk because you are an impatient driver. Tail gatting is not the awnser to get a driver to move over, it isof course the action if you are 16. Pepole need to realize their car can be a deadly weapon. Go ride with the firedepartment or just go talk to one of our ems workers they will tell Just how bad a wreck can be when drivers wreck. It is unfourtunate that people like you have a drivers license.

  14. Jane on January 29th, 2011 8:02 am

I have never seen so many drivers who are so fast and careless anywhere else in the United States. Hwy. 29 is like the qualifying lap for the Indy 500! Where is law enforcement when these people are tailgating, swerving in and out and speeding?

  15. Get out of my way on January 29th, 2011 3:22 am

Those of us who are forced to weave in and out of traffic everyday on Hwy 29 wouldn’t need to do so if the slower drivers would just stay in the right lane. It’s none of your business if I am speeding, nor is it your business why. If you see a vehicle trying to get around you, just move over out of the way. If you don’t, then be prepared for me to ride your tail and cut you off at the first chance I get.

We had just came by that spot about 5 minutes before it happened!!!! Coulda been us in this terrible thing!!!

  17. well on January 28th, 2011 5:39 pm

    More Red Lights.
    More Stop Signs.

More people driving less RESPONSIBLE !!!!
Come on get it together people.

Of course the way they predict gas prices to rise I believe some of us will have to stay of the road anyway.

  18. Just An Old Soldier on January 28th, 2011 12:21 pm

I sure wish that the State Troopers and ECSO deputies would patrol Highway 29 in the area north of I-10 to Ten Mile Road between 4 pm and 7 pm on weekdays – the people driving that road at that time are just out of control!

Tail-gating, speeding, weaving in an out (usually without signal or real reason) – it’s just ridiculous. Another light won’t help -they need to write some tickets and take control of that stretch of road!

The Sheriff’s Office could make a sizable contribution to the Escambia County coffers in just a few weeks of work there.

  19. some people on January 28th, 2011 11:54 am

They need to put up a traffic light there! Wait, There is one. Goes to show that traffic lights are not the problems, Careless people are!

  21. C W on January 28th, 2011 10:15 am

Some drivers on hwy29 are very aggressive, weaving in and out of lanes, cutting others off. Most are probably in a hurry to go nowhere.

Traffic was backed up almost to Walmart and took about 30 minutes to get by it. I was concerned about those in the gray car the red truck plowed into it pretty good. Saw other cars over to the side but did not realize they too had been part of this accident.
