Argument Over ‘Beer Pong’ Leads To Shooting Near Tate High

January 24, 2011

Deputies are investigating a weekend shooting near Tate High School that began with a game of beer pong.

The victim, identified as Brian Keith Cantwell, 20, of Cantonment, was at a residence in the 1300 block of Tate Road when an argument with the suspect led to the shooting around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

During the argument, the suspect, 21-year-old Zachary Steven Wilson, of Pensacola, displayed a handgun and shot Cantwell in the face, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. He was transported to West Florida Hospital with non-life threatening injuries where he was treated and released.

“They were at a house party betting on a game of beer pong when the argument broke out”, said Sheriff’s spokesperson Chris Welborn.

Deputies were unable to locate Wilson but have applied for an arrest warrant for aggravated battery, Welborn said.

Anyone that knows the whereabouts of Wilson is asked to call the Sheriff’s office at (850) 436-9620 or Crime Stoppers at (850) 433-STOP.

Yep, Joe Kennedy was a bootlegger and Nazi sympathizer. He had his daughter lobotomized, part of why they now sponsor Special Olympics. He was not the best person on earth, tried to win respectability through his children but too many of them carried on his traits to completely pull it off. At least the bootlegging money kept most of them out of jail most of the time.

    David for better people

Near tragedy involving “Dumb and Dumber” What were these morons thinking? This is another example of why the legal drinking age is still 21.. Thank the Lord that no one was killed..

I agree with David. Too many of you are assuming. There are a lot of good people in trailor parks and a lot of less than decent people in million dollar houses. For instance, I saw a history show the other day and it said that JFK’s father, who was a multi-million dollar self-made man, got all his money from running whiskey during the prohibition. He used that money to help get his son the Presidency. Hmmmm. That doesn’t necessarily make him trash, but there is dishonesty involved. Then there are those in the trailor parks who don’t lie, steal, or break the law. They live within their means and have a good heart. Shame on you all in any of these reports who run down everyone that is different from your point of view. Sometimes I think you all just have to slam these others just to make yourself feel good.

“They were at a house party betting on a game of beer pong when the argument broke out”.

Or maybe GAMBLING is the real problem here…. it doesnt even say that the guys were participating/drinking in the game!

This sounds really childish to me, what ever happened to the saying “Be a good sport”? It’s only a game, and now lives are ruined!

  7. Gembeaux on January 25th, 2011 4:58 pm

Dixie Chick: Legally adults, but medically and developmentally, adolescents. This classification is based on the development of the frontal cerebral cortex, involved in analysis and decision making. This is the last part of the brain to complete development in humans and isn’t usually fully developed until about age 23. Legal isn’t necessarily actual. And they both are someone’s child.

Based on your nonsensical retort, something tells me you have not strayed very far from your roots.

    REGARDING:
    “Stereo typical trailer park trash…”

    Prejudice.

Assumes people in trailer parks are trashy.
Assumes these lived in trailer parks.
Assumes those not living in trailer parks are always careful and decent.

    David the hypersensitive
who has twice lived in trailer parks
and known many good people there

    REGARDING:
“their ages as 20 and 21 Yrs old. That make them adults not children”

    Legally: adult,
    mentally? uncertain,
underage for drinking? The twenty year old was. Whether he was drinking or not, he was under the legal age to legally drink.

    David for voluntary sobriety
no matter what the law allows

Cream Puff: “Life just sucks, don’t it?”

No. Death sucks, and that is what all men/women walk in, until they are born again, and pass from death unto life, by the Power of God in Christ. Period

  14. Waterlady501 on January 25th, 2011 10:19 am

    To Sniper:

1–A quick Google search reveals part of playing Beer Pong is actually drinking the beer from the game cups; therefore, we can assume these men were drinking.

2–Although the news article doesn’t state that “alcohol impaired judgement was a factor” one would hope that when a person is NOT impaired by alcohol, he would realize it’s not ok to shoot someone in the face; therefore, we can assume that alcohol was a factor. If not, this guy has far more serious problems than playing a drinking game.

  15. CreamPuff on January 25th, 2011 9:24 am

Another thing…. I think that this says BEER PONG.
This was obviously an underage drinking party.
WHO did furnish that been. Personally I think THEY should be charged
with Accessory to ATTEMPTED MURDER, which is what this boys charge
    SHOULD have been.

TIME TO GET TOUGH ON PUNKS WITH GUNS WHO WILL PULL THEM
AT THE DROP OF THE HAT AND TRY TO KILL SOMEONE. THE SAME
GOES FOR PEOPLE WHO FURNISH BEEN TO MINORS.

    GROW UP

  16. CreamPuff on January 25th, 2011 9:15 am

    Sniper
    Maybe YOUR jumping to conclusions.
A 22 sometimes will only mess you up in the face too.
Look at the Congress woman and she is still alive after point blank range
in the head. Sometimes you just get lucky.

He should have been charge with murder.
We are way to lenient with these kids today and THEY think they can just do anything they darn well want.
Well at least until they go to jail. When mommy and daddy
can’t bail them out and cover up for them anymore…..LIFE JUST SUCKS DON’T
    IT.

  17. sniper on January 25th, 2011 8:29 am

it said nothing about either of them being drunk! nor did it say alcohol impaired judgement was a factor. i’ve played the game before using beer, water, and various other drinks…. sounds to me like a lot of you are jumping to conclusions. AND maybe a little clarity on the gunshot wound to the face concept… how do you get shot in the face and its not a life threatening injury? was it a BB gun?

  18. Kirk on January 25th, 2011 2:34 am

If you point a gun at someone’s face or head, and pull the trigger, no matter what anyone says after the fact, you are intent on killing them — duh…..
    aggravated battery??? Hogwash!

    Beam me up, Scotty.

  19. hawghead on January 24th, 2011 5:24 pm

Oh no another bleeding heart person taking offense to someone commenting on the stupid act. No none of us were there and no we may not really know the real reason this idiot shot this other idiot in the face. But I can bet you since beer was involved, whether or not they were playing beer pong or not, they were drunk. It just proves a point, stupid people will eliminate themselves if given enough beer and bullets…..

  20. No you cant FIX STUPID! on January 24th, 2011 4:34 pm

    “No comment” :)

  21. T. Myers on January 24th, 2011 4:01 pm

I guess the gap between…”Oops, I killed you and didnt mean to,” (manslaughter) and “I’m gonna hurt you really bad, but not enough to kill you,” is aggravated assault… even wth a gun. If the guy didn’t PLAN to kill the victim, it can’t be murder, of course.

Good example of why to leave your gun at home when drinking heavily. Can one fix stupid? I doubt it.

  22. Dixie Chick on January 24th, 2011 3:58 pm

    Gembeaux,
The story gives their ages as 20 and 21 Yrs old. That make them adults not children

  23. ME on January 24th, 2011 3:44 pm

To me……people can have their own opinions. It doesn’t matter if it was over “beer pong” or whatever. You don’t shoot someone in the face…period…It seems it could only be self defense (if that’s what you are indicating) if the other person that was shot also had some sort of lethal weapon..

  24. Only in the redneck riviera on January 24th, 2011 3:02 pm

    Stereo typical trailer park trash…

  25. me on January 24th, 2011 2:44 pm

1st off… People don’t need to talk unless they know the people and know what really happened at that house!! That all I’m gonna say for now!! It wasn’t even really over the beer pong game!! Don’t judge just from what u hear!! Learn the real story first!! U might have a different opinion!!

  26. kathy's middle son on January 24th, 2011 1:37 pm

But seriously…Beer Pong should be an Olympic sport…just saying.. and next time someone says “in yo face” they may be serious!

  27. Worried Mother!! What kind of world are our kids growing up in! on January 24th, 2011 1:37 pm

This should be attempted murder!!!!!!!!! No wonder people think its ok to shoot people all u get is a slap on the wrist! Unbelivable!

  28. JLee on January 24th, 2011 1:03 pm

Your interpretation of beer pong is close but not correct, two teams made up of two individuals throw ping pong balls into cups, either 6 or 10 made into a triangle, an they dont fill the cups up all the way. And whether or not the 21 year old bought beer for the 20 year old is irrelavant were talking about basically an attempted murder not an underage drinking charge…

  29. my2cents on January 24th, 2011 12:29 pm

REALLY, shoot someone in the face over beer pong?? What a knee-jerk reaction that cost both boys something that has been taken from others, Life!

  30. brande on January 24th, 2011 12:16 pm

Did the 21yr old buy the beer for the 20 yr old and I agree with just saying also

  31. Chumuckla proud on January 24th, 2011 11:52 am

I would not have known what beer pong was either if I hadn’t just seen something about it on NCIS a week or so ago. It is when you place plastic cups full of beer on a ping pong table and then, with the paddle, try to get the ping pong ball to land in the cups of beer. (Obviously juvenile).

  32. ME on January 24th, 2011 11:20 am

  33. Dave on January 24th, 2011 11:18 am

Not familar with the term”beer pong” but it doesn”t apparently go well when theres a firearm around.
