    glad you’re okay

    Hi Guys,
I am the person who was life flighted to the hospital. I am doing ok, just very very sore. I just wanted to say that in my opinion they should put a light right there. Because some might say that my cousin was a careless driver but that is totally incorrect. When he started across the intersection the driver in the mustang was no where in site. He came flying over the hill and ran into the vehicle I was in. Maybe the sun was in his eyes or something. What ever happened I fault no one. I am just glad and grateful to be alive and with my family. Thank everyone for their get wells and prayers.

to mary, the type of people who hang out at truck stops are the type of people who deliver just about everything you would ever need to buy at ever ystore you shop at.The truckers put their lives on the line everyday so that we may have food to eat, clothes to wear, furniture to use. There maybe be a few scoundels at truck stops, but everything you touch is transported by those who hang out at truck stops.Educate yourself before you go insulting those guys and gals outhere ttrying to make a decent living.Plus the advantage of jobs for local molino folks…bring it on!

Friend lives just off 97 and 29. People tend to go about 90 mph at all times of day going from 95 to 29 on the Southern tip of 97. That is one messed up intersection. Moving from any direction you have to be like an owl and look in every direction multiple times and wide awake/alert. Judging someones speed is not the easiest thing. Say prayers everytime I hear the sirens.

  5. harley1 on January 14th, 2011 4:59 pm

I know this intersection. There is no excuse for an accident to take place here. Visibility is good in all directions Defensive driving would go a long way towards reducing accidents, but that is not reality. After reading all the comments on this blog the big picture emerges. LACK OF TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT.

  6. John Payne on January 14th, 2011 3:37 pm

The real problem is no one stops for stop signs anymore!!!

  7. CreamPuff on January 14th, 2011 1:54 pm

Oooo by pass the tom thumb
Sounds good to me. I have been doing that for years.

  8. YELLER HAMMER on January 14th, 2011 1:50 pm

To Trish I should have been a little more clear on what I mean. The speed dosn’t need to increase from Cantonment where the 55 mph sign is till where 95A comes in above Tom Thum Store then it needs to go to 65mph. And granted some people could care less what the speed is.

  9. sniper on January 14th, 2011 12:29 pm

putting a stop light at this intersection is pointless. the real problem is the store access right at the intersection! so many times ive seen people leave the tom thumb store onto 29 and try and head north! in doing so they have to make sure 4 driections are clear. or people heading south and turn into the store directly off 29. now add rush hour to the mix… now add a possible disabled driver to the mix… heck lets throw in texting and cell phone useage… AND most of the people leaving the store are now distracted by EATING AND DRINKING. it stinks that the only real solution would be to move the store or incorporate a bypass type system. weird place to put an overpass but hey… its a weird problem…

STOP-means just that. Not a “California Roll” “Quick Glance Stop” but an actual STOP (keep your tires from moving!) . I have lived around the crossroads area for 40+ years. I have never seen the intersection cause an accident, only the stupidty using it! In my opinion, a traffic light is nothing more than a hanging stop sign. People do not obey those either. Maybe thinking cameras, and using them to catch STOP sign runners, hang them on a post just like they have at the traffic lights, issue NICE ($$$) tickets thru the mail and the stupid will become educated the hard way by having to pay Florida for being stupid! Oh wait, not you driving the vehicle-be more careful who uses your vehicle(s) and they have them where you can tell who was behind the wheel!

  11. yeah i said it on January 14th, 2011 11:30 am

there does not need to be a stop light that wouldn’t do anything except slow things down. traffic lights don’t stop wrecks. there’d most likely be less wrecks if people didn’t suck at driving and payed attention to whats going on around them. the intersection isn’t the problem the problem is with impatient morons behind the wheel.

  12. funny on January 14th, 2011 11:30 am

A red light wont fix anything. You cant fix stupid! Every time I have come to that intersection I STOP AND LOOK to make sure nothing is coming. I dont care if a car is doing 100mph There is plenty of room to see all directions there. If someone pulls out in front of someone there its probably because of cell phone usage, food, or just plain ole stupidity! Everybody is always quick to say “put up a redlight”. Why dont we start teaching our kids to properly drive and stop blaming everyone else!

  13. CreamPuff on January 14th, 2011 10:50 am

Came in by way of atmore this morning and was doing 55 at 5:40 as I
came down 97 and was shocked that people passing must have been
    doing at least 90.

Their bottom sure slowed down when they hit 29 I bet as I saw
    cops everywhere.

    Red lights wont stop them
    take away their licenses……….

  14. Mary on January 14th, 2011 10:40 am

To molinojim..What is this about a truck stop @ the Tom Thumb? 1st Ive heard! There goes the neighborhood!!! we all know what hangs out @ truckstops! I hope all is well in the wreck..yep there needs a redlight @ that location!

  15. Just Sayin' on January 14th, 2011 9:46 am

Trish: You’re right, people fly through there ignoring the 55mph posting.

It’s an intersection therefore it requires being alert. Traffic lights do not cure careless driving. People need to just stop being in such a hurry…..not just at that intersection, but driving in general. No life is worth the 5-10 minutes you might save if you speed or drive carelessly. And YES it CAN happen to you. It’s like I’ve always told my own kids, “It’s not just your driving skills that you have to worry about, it’s the other driver’s lack of skills.”

  16. Ramona on January 14th, 2011 9:18 am

IT SOOOOOOOOOOOOO TIME THAT THEY PUT A TRAFFIC LIGHT THERE. OUR CHILDREN HAVE TO CROSS THAT INTERSECTION TWICE DAILY. THERE HAVE BEEN SO MANY WRECKS THERE. WHAT CAN WE DO TO GET THE STATE TO PUT ONE UP.

  17. j on January 14th, 2011 8:46 am

I agree that is a bad intersection. If Molino had another gas station it would help alleviate some of the problem

  18. Trish on January 14th, 2011 8:39 am

To Yeller Hammer: The speed limit there is 55. It changes from 65mph to 55 north of Tom Thumb where you can turn on 95A and it stays 55 going south until you pass Fran’s Dinner. Even that does not slow them down. People don’t care and they think it will never happen to them.

  19. YELLER HAMMER on January 14th, 2011 8:02 am

We need red lights at this intersection, the cross roads intersection and at Hwy 196 intersection. And the the speed limit needs to back down to 55 mph.

  20. Just Sayin' on January 14th, 2011 7:02 am

Here’s an idea…..how about the people on Hwy 29 actually slow down to 55mph (as posted) and use caution (as the caution light suggests) and the people crossing Hwy 29 actually STOP at the STOP sign/flashing red light. There is a merge lane on the Southbound side of 29 for those going south from Hwy97….use it! Come on, people, let’s stay alert to our surroundings when we drive and if the sun is in your eyes so much that you can’t see, pull over/get sunglasses/use your visor, whatever, don’t just think, “Well, I can’t see but maybe nothing’s coming on this 4-lane, highly traveled road. I’ll just take my chances.”

  21. Dave on January 14th, 2011 6:39 am

Poorly designed intersection, very dangerous. They need a traffic signal with a left turn signal for Northbound traffic to turn onto Hwy 97. The angle of the road at that intersection is too wide and the angle makes it difficult to judge the distance of the southbound traffic.

  22. dnutjob on January 14th, 2011 5:56 am

If you put a red light up, it will be just as dangerous, if you live on Crabtree you are already looking in the rearview to see if someone is hit ya in the rear coming off of 97, the whole intersection would have to be designed different, dont see that happening. People need to slow down and pay attention and sometimes people just make mistakes its not the intersection its the drivers.

  23. Crawford on January 14th, 2011 12:38 am

Hope all will quickly recover from this wreck. I witnessed it in my rearview mirror and saw the white vehicle coming south on 29 and the mustang flying in from the east, apparently not even seeing the white vehicle travelling south. The sun may have been in the drivers eyes.

  24. heaven in my view on January 13th, 2011 11:04 pm

You hit the nail on the head some people, my sentiments exactly!!

  25. Tee on January 13th, 2011 10:47 pm

Any intersection is dangerous when someone pulls out infront of another car. Bad drivers are dangerous not the intersections.

  26. some people on January 13th, 2011 10:43 pm

Looks like someone pulled out in front of someone. Maybe people should stop being idiots and stop pulling out in front of people. Ive been through that intersection a thousand times and never have been even close to being in an accident. Stop blaming the state and lack of red lights and start blaming the careless drivers!

  27. molino jim on January 13th, 2011 8:46 pm

IF YOU THINK IT’S BAD NOW —JUST WAIT UNTILL THE TRUCK STOP PART AT THE REAR OF THE THUMB OPENS UP. THERE WILL BE EVEN MORE TRAFFIC AT THE INTERSECTION COMING AND GOING IN ALL SORTS OF DIRECTIONS. I HAD TALKED WITH A FHP OFFICER A WHILE BACK AND HE SAID IT WAS NOTHING TO WRITE TICKET FOR 70-90 MPH IN THE CROSS ROADS AREA. I’VE BEEN PASSED ON 97 WHILE DRIVING THE LEGAL SPEED BY CARS THAT HAD TO BE PUSHING 100 MPH. EVERY ONE IS ALWAYS LATE FOR SOMETHING

  28. tara on January 13th, 2011 8:24 pm

I agree, a four way red light system would be more effective.

  29. RIDICULOUS on January 13th, 2011 8:08 pm

why oh why cant they just make intersection normal red light green light thing for this, this is crazy, how many more folks have to die or get hurt before they do something.

  30. joshua on January 13th, 2011 7:59 pm

OMG … we seen the area of the crash coming home from school im glad no one was seriously hurt but looking at the pics the hurt person was life flited this is so crazy tom thumb red light is a bad wreack spot

  31. wild once on January 13th, 2011 6:16 pm

One day we might get a red light before a school bus full of children are involed.
    Hope all are well ….

  32. Cottage Hill neighbor on January 13th, 2011 6:08 pm

Wow, right after they spent so much money on a study to tell them that this was a dangerous intersection. Really?

My prayers are with the injured and their families.

  33. p on January 13th, 2011 6:04 pm

Looks like the crossroad get anotherone. Hope all will be ok.
