Man Gets 20 Years For Robbery, Stolen Steaks In His Pants

January 5, 2011

An Escambia County man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Tuesday for attempting to steal a pack of steaks he had hidden inside his pants.

State Attorney Bill Eddins said Tuesday that Stephen Trevor Montgomery was sentenced as a habitual felony offender to 20 years in state prison by Judge Ronald Swanson.

On November 23, 2010, Montgomery was found guilty by an Escambia County jury of robbery with a weapon, improper exhibition of a weapon, battery, and trespassing.

On March 30, 2010, Montgomery attempted to leave the Barnes Supermarket with a family pack of steaks he put down the front of his pants. The victim, a loss prevention officer at the store, reached for the steaks when the defendant grabbed him by his wrists and the two began to struggle. The victim followed Montgomery outside where defendant pulled a knife and pointed it at him. The defendant ran from the area and was apprehended a short time later.

Montgomery had been previously convicted of seven felonies and fourteen misdemeanors, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

I think that it is a shame that there are people out there and on this site that think a person who drinks too much and kills someone is not a bad as someone who steals a steak and kills no one seriously people need to get things straight it is so much worse to kill someone if you are drinking any alcholic beverage you should not get behind the wheel of a car be smart and pay for your actions of stupidity this man yes has previous charges also and he is serving his time just as any man who does something stupid should but killing someone is much worse than stealing dont get the facts twisted!

This guy had seven felony convictions and 14 misdemeanor convictions and was still on the streer, committing more crimes. Sounds like he should have already been in the slammer to me. What makes no sense to me if how somebody like this can still be walking around free after that many convictions, yet a hard working person who has never been in jail a day in their life gets sent to prison if they are DUI and accidentally cause a death, regardless of the circumstances. I’m not condoning drunk driving at all, but think about a scenario where a man or woman who has worked for 20 or more years and has raised a family, never been in any trouble, has one too many drinks at a party, then gets into a wreck on the way home and unfortunately somebody dies. That person is gonna go serve a lengty prison sentence, where this idiot stealing steaks and pulling a knife on a loss prevention officer has seven felony convictions and wasn’t in prison. Sounds like the person with a good job and family who is in an accident and kills somebody with a blood alcohol level above .08 is a much better candidate for probation that somebody with seven felonies. I know the guy got twenty years, but why wasn’t he already in prison? What ever happened to the old “three strikes” rule?

habitual offender–7 felonies and 14 misdemeanors and that’s just considering the ones for which he was convicted, means he has committed his life to preying on others.

pulled a knife, that makes it armed robbery anyway.

pointing it at the other would constitute assault even if he hadn’t stolen.

Folks noticed a few years back that about ninty percent of crimes were being committed by the same ten percent of the criminals. Considering previous felonies when deciding punishment for the latest one seems extremely sensible.

David hoping he gets steak in prison
