2010 Persons Of The Year: Wilbur Earl Hendrix
January 2, 2011
NorthEscambia.com is naming Persons of the Year for 2010 each day this week.
Wilbur Earl Hendrix of Molino has posthumously been named one of our North Escambia Persons of the Year.
Hendrix was one of five Molino residents that organized and founded the Molino Volunteer Fire Department, and he served as Molino’s first fire chief.
Hendrix passed away July 31, 2010, at the age of 76. He was a lifelong resident of Molino.
In 1968, Wilbur Hendrix and his wife Carolyn founded Hendrix Lawn and Cycle and Hendrix Service Center. Together, they owned and operated the successful, community-minded business for over 38 years.
“A man of God and family, Wilbur will be remembered by those who knew him best as someone who worked with his hands his entire life. Wilbur was creative and inventive, able to find ingenious solutions, and could always be looked to when something needed repairing, even after his fingers and wrist had to be repaired. He was always willing to help anyone in need of finding a problem with automobiles, lawn mowers and equipment, even traveling strangers who needed help. He never turned his back on anyone who needed his help,” according to his obituary.

Really nice man.He is missed by many.
It was great to see someone being honored we can use as a role model. Public safety is one thing, being a caring human another. Too often the two get confused. Except in his case. Through all the politics and challenges, life is about the human cause. I admire a man who puts aside those petty political differences which are only here for a short time. A life worth living is shown by items such as this article honoring a man who has given to his community and not asked for honors. Rest in peace Wilbur. You have spurred the imaginations and duties of us all.
I am very proud to be Wilbur Hendrix’s daughter. He was a great Dad and I miss him so much. Dad started out everyday reading his Bible. He prayed for his family, calling each of us by name, daily. He loved God so much and taught his children, grandchildren and everyone he came in contact with how much God loves us. Thank you so much for his deserving nomination and as he would say “To God Be The Glory”.
Mr. Hendrix’s legacy of public service is to be highly commended. But, when all is said and done, his true legacy is that of a faithful Christian husband and father: a legacy that has clearly carried on to his children and granchildren. His family should truly be proud, and I am very glad to see him recognized for honoring what was clearly most important to him – his Lord, his family, and his community. If only more people today would esteem the simple, foundational values that Mr. Hendrix embraced all his life!
my family is very humbled by your comments, thank you so very much for them
wilbur always loved his Lord, family, friends, and acquaintances and all was very special to him THANK YOU for being so kind in your words, thoughts and
friendship.
This shows what a good upbringing and sound morals Wilber had. Those who know his family know that he passed a lot of his kindness and good upbringing on to his family, and to others in the community. A very special person!
A great choice.he was an asset. ToMolina ,in so many ways.
a good fellow, missed
Very inspiring story! That is what I like about North Escambia. “Salt of the earth’ type of people. I know there are all kinds here, but this is the good in our community. Makes you think about what kind of legacy we will leave behind. I hope I have a similar testimony.
My husband loves the Hendrix shop…always helpful and reasonable rates. I hope it continues to be successful.
Thanks for sharing Mr. Hendrix’s story.
He was one that I always looked up to. We miss him. It’d be a better world if it had more Mr. Wilburs in it for sure! And Randy……your not being bias, just telling it like it is bro! Glad he was nominated!!!!!
The Worlds Greatest Popie! We love and miss him very much. Thank you for nominating him.
My family and I would love to know who did such a wonderful thing. My father would just say it was no big thing, to live a life as dad did, but in today’s age there are few men to look up to. I know he was my father (and that I am a little bias) he lead allot of people to the lord and to be good members of the community by just living a good example for others. Dad loves everyone. No one was a stranger to him just a another chance to find a new friend . Thank you
When all is said and done the bottom line on Wilbur is that he was a very good person. The crew that is at the store now are carrying on Wilbur’s tradition and are good people to deal with. When you went in with a question I can still see Wilbur sort of smile and then come up with an answer. Like many of us here in the area we miss the rascal.
Truly a Great man.
Not many like him anymore
Salute , Sir
Wilbur would go out of his way to help people even till the very end. I worked for Wilbur and Carolyn for many years and I very much admired their work ethics and the way they ran their business. Wilbur was and is a man very much admired by family, friends and community and he is truly missed.
So nice to remember people that LIKE to help others!!
