FCAT Warning For Students, Parents: No Cell Phones, No Cameras

February 8, 2010

Escambia County students in grades four, eight and ten will take the writing portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) On Tuesday, and students in grades six, seven and nine will take the Escambia Writes! test, a district test similar to the FCAT.

There are several important things for students and parents to remember prior to the FCAT test, according the Gayle Hanks, guidance counselor at Ernest Ward Middle School, including the importance of a good night’s sleep tonight.

Also, students must not have a cell phone or any other electronic device “within arm’s reach” even if the device is not visible, according to Hanks. Students should not have cell phones in their pockets, clipped to their belts, at their desks, or anywhere they can be easily accessed during testing. If they do, their entire FCAT test will be invalidated.

Students can leave their cell phones or other electronic devices in the office at their school or with their teacher prior to the test, Northview Principal Gayle Weaver said.

Some other important FCAT points on this day before the big writing test, according to Hanks:

  • If a student starts a test and leaves without finishing (for an appointment, illness, etc.), he/she will NOT be allowed to complete the test. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made once the student leaves the school’s campus.
  • If a student arrives at school after the test begins, he/she will not be admitted to the testing site. The student will be required to sit in the office until testing is finished for the day.

Highway 31 Closed Between Atmore And Perdido

February 8, 2010

hwy31wash10.jpg

Highway 31 was closed Monday for about a month between Atmore to Perdido.

The road was  closed to repair damage from heavy rain and flooding back in December, including an area near Pineville Road. The detour route will be Industrial Drive in Atmore to Jacks Springs Road to I-65 to Baldwin County Road 47 (the Perdido exit) back to Highway 31.

The Alabama Department of Transportation is advising motorists that there could be delays due to the detour, and travel times should be adjusted accordingly.

Weather permitting, the project should be completed by March 12.

Pictured above: Highway 31 was closed between Atmore and Bay Minette for about a month so areas such as this washout in Nokomis can be repaired. The map below pinpoints the location of the photograph above. NorthEscambia.com photo, click to enlarge.

Olivia’s Super Sunday In Miami

February 7, 2010

olivia12.jpg

It was a super Sunday in Miami for the Bush family as they spent a little family time a short distance from the Super Bowl. But the big game for the family was not Sunday night, it will be Monday as daughter Olivia undergoes brain surgery at Miami Children’s Hospital.

For an update on this story, click here.

We first introduced you to Olivia Bush back in early December. Olivia Bush, 6, is blind, able to see only a little light with her left eye. She has a shunt to drain fluid off of her brain, and has frequent seizures.

After a six hour surgery on Monday, doctors think Olivia could see a significant improvement in her life. During the surgery, doctors will remove a portion of her brain — basically taking out the bad, non-functioning portion and leaving behind the good, healthy tissue.

Just before Christmas, Olivia and her family traveled to Miami Children’s Hospital hoping to find a cure for her seizures. While in Miami, Olivia was monitored by a 35-lead EEG and a video camera with doctors hoping to capture data from a seizure. On the Tuesday night before Christmas, she had a seizure that was captured on the EEG and video, according to her father Tad Bush. That information has allowed doctors to schedule Monday’s surgery.

“I am so excited about this!  I am so happy that if all goes well, Olivia could finally be seizure free! Maybe no more meds?  Praise the Lord!” said Olivia’s mom Amber Bush.

Sunday concluded a few days of family time for Olivia and her parents. Trips to the museum, the zoo and churches. Tonight will be their final family time prior to Monday’s big surgery. Churches in the Atmore and North Escambia area, as well as one in Miami, gathered in prayer for Olivia.

“So, now we are in Miami and the Super Bowl frenzy has already started.  We got to see the Saints buses and police entourage pass by,” Amber said Thursday. “You would have thought it was a funeral procession by all the people stopping to look.  Ridiculous to me…but I could care less about football.  Them being in town just made our hotel cost a lot more.”

NorthEscambia.com will publish an updated story on Olivia next week.

Century To Explore Elm Street Fix

February 7, 2010

The Town of Century will spend just of $5,000 for engineering work to eliminate stormwater problems on Elm Street.

The road often washes out or is undermined during heavy rains. The town will pay Fabre Engineering $5,200 to design a fix, and the town’s road department will implement the fix based upon the engineering firm’s plans.

“This is something I really believe needs to be done,” said Gary Riley, Century council member.

Molino Homemakers: Use A Potato Bag

February 7, 2010

A microwaved baking potato is much better when cooked in a “Potato Bag” — that was the lesson of the day at the February meeting of the Molino Homemakers Club.

The following was submitted by Terri Brown on behalf of the Molino Homemakers Club.

taterbag11.jpgBeing a creative homemaker doesn’t require a lot of money but it does require a lot of time and attention. This month the Molino Homemaker’s program was given by Nancy Holland on making “Potato Bags”.

These bags are microwaveable bags made out of 100% cotton material used to cook baking potatoes in the microwave. This material will not burn as the heat of the microwave cooks the potato. The inside of the potatoes will be well done and moist while the outside skin remains tender. The potatoes only need to be washed, dried, wrapped in a paper towel, inserted into the potato bag and microwaved. No pricking! Cooking time will vary depending on the power of your microwave and the number of potatoes you are cooking.

Each bag will hold 1-4 baking potatoes. When done let the potato bag air dry until you’re ready to use it again or machine wash and dry. They are also kid safe.

Of course it would be easy to order a potato bag off the internet but wouldn’t be near as interesting as learning how to make one from a club member. Potato bags sell on the internet between $5 and $12 each.

If you are interested in learning how to make a potato bag, please contact Nancy Holland at (850) 587-5464.

The Molino Homemakers Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month except July at Molino First Assembly of God Church.
