Missing Elderly Man Found Safe

February 14, 2010

clydecarrol10.jpg  An elderly Cantonment man has been found safe, about 21 hours after he was reported missing following a funeral in Alabama.

Escambia County (Ala.) Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said Clyde Rufus Carroll, 78, was located at about 10:30 this morning on Alger Road north of Butler Street in Escambia County, Alabama, about 20 miles from Wallace where he was last seen.

Lambert said Carroll had driven down a dirt road to an oil well just south of I-65. When he turned around, he ran the van he was driving into a ditch, nearly rolling the van onto it’s side, Lambert said said. Carroll was cold, but otherwise appeared to be in good condition. He was transported by ambulance to D.W. McMillan Hospital in Brewton to be evaluated.

Carroll volunteers for Faith Chapel Funeral Home in Cantonment. He was last seen about 1:30 p.m. Saturday at a funeral in Wallace, about 20 miles north of Flomaton. It appears that he took a wrong turn when he left the funeral in the Faith Chapel van.

$2.3 Million Awarded To Molino Woman After Ivan Cleanup Crash

February 14, 2010

A Molino woman who crashed into a Hurricane Ivan cleanup trailer in 2004 has been awarded $2.3 million by an Escambia County jury.

Penny Nixon, now 42, received the damage award Friday in Escambia County Circuit Court against contractors Ashbritt Inc., of Pompano Beach, and Gulf Sandblasting and Painting, Inc., of Mississipi.

23million.jpgNixon rear-ended heavy equipment trailer on November 2, 2004, on Jacks Branch Road. The trailer was parked in the road without lights or reflectors, cones or other safety markers while crews were busy loading dump trucks with debris.

The trailer was operated by Gulf Sandblasting and Painting which was working as a subcontractor for AshBritt, Inc.

Evidence introduced during the five-day trial showed that Nixon had permanent brain damage caused by the accident that prevented her from working or finishing nursing school.

Penny Nixon’s name was Penny Packer at the time of the crash, but she married Charles Nixon, Jr. in 2008. Her lawsuit was filed in June, 2005.

Snow Tonight? Maybe For Some, No For Others

February 14, 2010

(Updated 4:00 p.m.) Two days after the first snowfall in 14 years,  there is a chance of more snow tonight.

The weather service says an inch is possible in and around Atmore and Flomaton and very little accumulation is expected in North Escambia. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Escambia County, Alabama.

“There will be adequate moisture for rain to develop this evening just ahead of the cold front…and then transition to a mix of rain and snow after midnight as the cold airmass pushes through the area. Temperatures could be cold enough late tonight and early Monday morning for the most of the precipitation north of I-10 to fall completely as snow,” according to the weather advisory.

Any snow that accumulates would be expected to end by daybreak and melt quickly in the sun.

Here is your official North Escambia area forecast:

  • Tonight Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of rain in the evening… then rain likely after midnight. Snow likely late in the night. Little or no snow accumulation. Lows in the mid 30s. South winds 5 to 10 mph becoming southwest 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.
  • Presidents Day Mostly cloudy in the morning then clearing. Chance of rain and snow in the morning. Highs in the upper 40s. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 50 percent.
  • Monday Night Colder. Mostly clear. Lows in the mid 20s. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph.
  • Tuesday Mostly sunny. Highs around 50. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph becoming 5 to 15 mph in the afternoon.
  • Tuesday Night Partly cloudy. Lows in the mid 20s. West winds around 5 mph.
  • Wednesday Sunny. Highs in the mid 50s.
