It’s Report Card Day

Moms and dads…check the book bags and binders tonight. Today is report card day in Escambia County, Florida.

The third nine-weeks report cards from Escambia County Schools will be sent home today.

The last day of school is June 4. The only remaining school holiday is Memorial Day on May 31.

EREC Schedules Annual Meeting

April 12, 2010

Mark your calendar — Escambia River Electric Cooperative’s 71st Annual Meeting will be held Saturday, April 24 at Northview High School. EREC members that attend will have the chance to win a variety of door prizes, including a $500 credit on the member’s electric bill.

Registration begins at 11:00 a.m., and the business meeting takes place at 1:00 p.m..

Jay Hospital will sponsor a health fair with free blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar checks.

Entertainment will be provided by the Northend Stompers and the Calloways. Luncheon plates will be available from the Northview High School FFA.

There will be gifts for every EREC member, and for the kids, there will be games and prizes.

11th Grade Core Value Award Recipients Named

garretttyler10.jpgSeveral Escambia County 11th grade students were recently named Core Value Award Recipients based up their demonstration of the Core Values of equality, integrity, patriotism, honesty, responsibility and respect. They each received a $100 award check from Sub West Rotary Club.

Core Value Award Recipients were:

$244,208 Lottery Ticket Sold In Walnut Hill

fant5.jpgOne person will collect $244,208 for a “Fantasy 5″ winning ticket sold Friday night in Walnut Hill, according to the Florida Lottery.

Only one ticket matched the winning numbers:  13-21-25-28-36.

There were 287 tickets with four matching numbers worth $137 each. There were 9,650 tickets matching three numbers that were worth $11 each, and 100,219  had two numbers for a free Quick Pick ticket.

The ticket was sold at the O’Yes Lotto at 11331 Highway 97.

Teen Injured In Freak Speedway Accident

A teen was severely injured in a freak accident Saturday night at the Flomaton Speedway. Authorities said the young teen male was struck in the face by an object flung from the dirt raceway about 10:15 p.m. A “trauma alert” was initially called on the victim.

The victim was transported by LifeFlight to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. Further details were not available.

Man Murdered; Police Looking For Grandson

The Pensacola Police Department is asking for the public’s help in finding a person of interest in the city’s third murder of the year.

davaltkurtlin.jpgPensacola Police have identified and are searching for Kurtlin Davalt (pictured) for questioning regarding the death of a man whose body was found inside his home Saturday afternoon.

Police were dispatched to the home in the 1300 block of East Fisher Street around 12:30 p.m. today after receiving a call from Escambia County Emergency Medical Services that someone had found Vincent Davalt, 74, deceased inside the house.

Lt. Gary Cutler said details on the suspected cause of death are not being released. An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death.

Meanwhile, police need help in finding the victim’s grandson, Kurtlin Davalt, 33, also of the 1300 block of East Fisher Street. He may be driving a black 1995 Mercedes Benz station wagon with a luggage rack on top and a specialized FAMU license tag with the plate number M04SQ.  Cutler said the vehicle is registered to Vincent Davalt.

This is the third homicide this year within city limits.

Anyone having information on the incident or on Kurtlin Davalt’s location is asked to contact Detective Jonathan Thacker at (850) 435-1975 or the Pensacola Police Department at 435-1900.

Covenant Hospice Offers Free Volunteer Workshops

Covenant Hospice is seeking individuals who are interested in making a difference in the lives of patients and families facing end-of-life issues and in supporting the organization.

A volunteer workshop will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 12 and Wednesday, April 14 at the Jay Community Center located at 5259 Booker Lane in Jay. The workshop is free and open to the public. Food and drinks will be provided.

Patient and family support volunteer training will provide an overview of hospice care, including Covenant’s programs and services and the special roles that volunteers fill. This training prepares individuals to volunteer in a variety of ways. Volunteer choices include visiting and companionship for patients, supporting family members by offering emotional support and practical help, assisting with fund raising events, providing administrative support in a Covenant office, serving as an outreach Ambassador and much more.

No special background or experience is required to volunteer for Covenant, just a desire to make a difference. Time commitment is flexible and based on volunteer availability. Retired and working professionals are also needed to share their expertise and experience with patients and families. To register or to learn more, call Susanna Doyle at (850) 202-5939.
