Free Sacred Heart Health Screenings Today

Sacred Heart Health System will provide free health screenings Wednesday in Davisville for the poor, elderly and uninsured.
Sacred Heart staff will provide heart-health screenings to measure blood pressure, blood sugar and total cholesterol and to screen for anemia as part of their Mission in Motion program. The screenings are helpful in diagnosing conditions that put people at high risk for heart attack, stroke, diabetes and other health problems.
Sacred Heart’s Mission in Motion staff will provide screenings for adults at the Davisville Community Center on Highway 97 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Parents, Students Learn About New Ernest Ward Electrical Academy

A new program at Ernest Ward Middle School will provide students the opportunity to learn all about electricity and green power.
Tuesday, parents and students had the opportunity to learn more about the IBEW Electrical Academy at Ernest Ward Middle School. The academy, which begins in August, is the first such program in the nation at the middle school level.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers will work with the school district to create the Electrical Academy. Middle school career academies are small, personalized learning communities within a school in which select students and teachers participate during a two or three-year span. A career academy involves teachers from different subjects working together as an interdisciplinary team.
“We are really going to emphasize going green,” Reagan McDaniel, business manager for the IBEW Local Union 676, said while standing in front of trailer-mounted solar panels capable of generating about 2,000 watts of power. “It’s important that students learn about green power options.”
In the EWMS Electrical Academy, the students will be introduced to electrical systems, learn the theories of electricity and gain valuable hands-on experience with various projects. Part of that hands-on experience will include learning how to wire a home. While students will work with AC (household type) electrical systems, most projects will use DC (battery type) voltage for safety reasons.
During a recent registration period, 167 incoming seventh and eight grade students signed up for the Electrical Academy, according to Principal Nancy Gindl-Perry. The academy, she said, will only be able to accept about 40 students from each grade level. School grades, FCAT scores and behavior records will play a factor in which students are selected for the program.
For seventh and eight grade students, the academy will be two semesters. Sixth grade students will have the opportunity to take Electrical Academy classes as part of the “wheel” — a nine week course.
“My son is an electrical engineer,” said Gayle Hanks, Ernest Ward guidance counselor. “He said that students that gain the hands on training before college will hold an advantage.”
McDaniel said that current plans call for expanding the IBEW electrical academy to Northview High School.
During the school day, current sixth and seventh grade students were given the chance to see the trailer mounted solar panels in action — powering a fan, leaf blower and vacuum cleaner.

Pace Wins 5A Championship

The Pace Patriots won the Florida High School Athletic Association 5A state championship Tuesday night with a 6-5 win over Armwood in eight innings.
Pace was behind 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth but rallied to tie it 5-5. The teams continued without scoring until the eighth. That’s when the Patriots loaded the bases. At 2-2, David Casey drove the winning run over the third baseman.
It was the 25th win in a row and the fourth state title for the Patriots.

Clarence W. Phillips

Mr. Clarence W. Phillips, 75, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010 at a Pensacola, FL hospital.
Mr. Phillips was a native and resident of Walnut Hill, FL for most of his life. He was retired from the U.S. Marines after 21 years, a Veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam War and attended the Bratt Assembly of God Church. Preceded in death by a Brother, Willard Phillips and a Sister, Merlene Sowell.
Survivors include: his Wife Louise Phillips of Walnut Hill, FL; his Son, Jerry D. and Kathryn Phillips of Tallahassee, FL; 2 Grandchildren, Matthew J. Phillips and Trevor L. Phillips; two Brothers, Lindy Phillips of Davisville, FL, and D.L. Phillips of Lillington, NC; and three Sisters, Jean Solomon of Davisville, FL, Ethel Wilcox of Loxley, AL, and Emily Reynolds of Oneonta, AL.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Theron Collinsworth officiating.
Burial will follow at Dry Springs Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 27, 2010 from 1:00 P.M. until funeral time at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Linda Cmehil

Linda Cmehil, age 50 of Molino, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2010.
Linda was a proud Navy wife and Navy ombudsman. She was a proud mother who was very involved in her children’s lives, volunteering whenever she could. She was quite the craftsperson, making jewelry, paintings, sewing, knitting, needlepoint, ceramics, stained glass and calligraphy.
She was a member of the Molino Homemakers.
She was preceded in death by her biological father, David White.
Survivors include her loving husband of 33 years, Andrew Lee Cmehil; son, Trevor Cmehil; daughter, Kathryn Cmehil; parents, William and Gertraud Ernst; two brothers, Timothy Ernst (Tammy) and Steven Ernst (Carolyn).
Faith Chapel Funeral Home, 100 Beverly Pkwy is in charge of arrangements.
Man Accused Of Shooting Seven People Taken Into Custody In Perdido

A man accused of shooting seven people at a weekend party was taken into custody today by deputies and U.S. Marshals near Perdido, Ala., just northwest of Nokomis, Fla.
Marcus Darnell Butler, 22, is facing multiple second degree assault charges for allegedly opening fire at a May Day party Saturday night near Tensaw in northern Baldwin County, Ala. A total of seven people were reported to be hit in their arms, legs and feet — none of the injuries were life threatening.
Investigators have said the shooting may have been related to an ongoing feud over a woman between Butler and one of the victims.
Butler surrendered without incident to members of the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Regional Task Force and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office. He is being held in the Baldwin County Corrections Center in Bay Minette.
Fire Destroys Excavator

Fire destroyed a John Deere trackhoe Tuesday afternoon near Walnut Hill. The excavator was being used to clear a wooded area on Arthur Brown Road just west of Highway 97A. It was a total loss.
There were no injuries reported in the 1 p.m. fire.
The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue responded to the call.

Driver Injured In Early Morning Highway 97 Rollover Crash

One person was injured in a single vehicle rollover accident early Tuesday morning on Highway 97 just north of Gobbler Road in Walnut Hill.
The driver of a northbound Oldsmobile Intrigue apparently lost control, ran off the side of the road and overturned about 12:45 a.m. The vehicle came to rest upright in the ditch.
The male driver was transported by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital with what was believed to be non-life threatening injuries. There were no passengers in the car. The driver’s name and condition were not immediately available; the accident is still under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Atmore Ambulance also responded to the early morning accident.
