A road crew found the body about 9:20 a.m. in tall grass just off the northbound lanes of Highway 29 about a tenth of a mile north of Champion Drive and the West Fraser McDavid sawmill.

“It is being treated as a homicide to err on the side of caution,” Sgt. Ted Roy, spokesperson for the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said. Roy said an autopsy would be conducted Wednesday to determine how the man died. As of now, he said investigators did not know how or exactly the man died or if foul play was involved. Roy said it was possible that the man was hit by a vehicle, but that was yet to be determined.

Roy said authorities do know the man’s identity, but he declined to release the man’s name at this time.

Bratt Elementary School will be getting a covered play area later this year from the former Carver/Century School.

“The request was made by the school to investigate the feasibility of relocating the covered play structure located at the former Carver/Century K-8 school to Bratt Elementary.  The assessment was conducted and the project was commissioned,” said Shawn Dennis, assistant superintendent of operations for the Escambia County School District.

Dannheisser Appointed To Escambia Bench, Replaces Ackerman

August 10, 2010

Thomas V. Dannheisser of Pensacola was appointed Monday to the Escambia County Court by Gov. Charlie Crist.

“Tom has a long-standing commitment and dedication to pursuing public service and to fairly and compassionately enforcing Florida law,” said Governor Crist. “I am confident his over two decades of experience will serve him well as he takes the bench.”

Dannheisser, 54, has been an assistant county attorney for Santa Rosa County since 1986. Previously, he was an assistant Escambia County attorney from 1983 to 1986, an assistant state attorney with the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit from 1982 to 1983 and with the Twelfth Judicial Circuit from 1981 to 1982. Dannheisser received his bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Florida.

Dannheisser will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge David Ackerman.

Ackerman resigned his office on May 24 with the intent to return in February, 2011, one month after he was to begin a new six-year term. He was the only candidate to qualify for the position for the November ballot. Ackerman resigned, he said, to collect a $1.3 million lump sum retirement payment to deal with a financial problem involving his wife’s business.

In an unanimous opinion, the Supreme Court said Crist should appoint a new judge to fill the position.

Man Allegedly Assaults Underage Girl At Walmart

August 10, 2010

An Escambia County man was arrested Sunday night at a Pensacola Walmart after being held at gunpoint by the father of an underage girl he allegedly groped.

William Burten Butler, 29, of Pensacola, was charged with battery and lewd and lacivious behavior following the incident.

An Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputy, already at the Walmart on an unrelated case, was approached by a customer and advised of a fight in the parking lot. The deputy learned that the juvenile’s father, Richard Ferrand, 41, had witnessed Butler approach his juvenile daughter and ask for her phone number. Ferrand approached Butler and asked him to leave her alone, according to deputies.

Ferrand continued to keep close watch over his daughter and two of her friends, also juveniles, when he saw Butler walk into the women’s restroom that his daughter was using. Ferrand, concerned for his daughter’s safety, also entered the restroom. He noticed that while his daughter was attempting to leave Butler followed and slid his hand under the back of her shirt.

Ferrand followed Butler and asked a cashier to call the Sheriff’s Office. He also dialed 911 on his cell phone. Once in the parking lot Butler became aggressive towards Ferrand. Ferrand, fearing for his safety, withdrew a handgun from his waist and held Butler until the deputy arrived. Ferrand was in possession of a concealed carry permit at the time of the incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Butler remains in the Escambia County Jail on $70,000 bond.

The incident occurred at the Walmart on Blue Angel Parkway.
