Two Held In North Santa Rosa Shooting

December 22, 2010

Two people are behind bars charged with shooting at a pickup at a Highway 4 home near Berrydale.

A truck with six people was driving past Gary Phillips home in the 7000 block of Highway 4 west of Jay when something hit their truck. They stopped to investigate, and that’s when they said gunfire erupted. The victims told the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office that Phillips threatened them and fired his rifle, hitting the truck.

Phillips told deputies that he fired into the air to threaten the people in the truck after one of them fired a gun into the air first.

Gary Phillips was charged with aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Jerry Phillips of Navarre was also charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident. Both men remain in the Santa Rosa County Jail without bond.

Wow! I never thought that I’d be grouped with idiots, drugs, booze and guns. I own a large piece of fenced property, a compound if you will, and my family lives here with me. We just thought that this was the country life. You know, good neighbors, no crime, healthy living and church on Sunday morning. Maybe we should sell and move to Pensacola where no-one is ever shot, carjacked, home invaded, raped or killed, at least then we wouldnt be grouped with idiots, drugs, booze and guns.

The location of the shooting has nothing to do with the community. People are shot at or shot in P’cola and surrounding comnunites all the time. It’s just the world we live in now. People have no respect for life.

BTW – was not any hunters who shot at me , and I am a Hunter

I rounded the corner going toward Atmore at the feed store that was Dixie feed before it changed hands

I was shot from an oncoming car just before he passed me in that turn going the opposite direction.

It was a modern car and had nothing to do with hurting , compounds , how people live 100 years ago , or anyone out to kill me

I think it was a young person who was just getting their jollies.

I simply own agricultural land in that area that borders IP Land and the wife and I woke up early at our home in Perdido and decided to go fish our pond near walnut Hill

I’ve been in Jay many times of day or night. Always found friendly, decent people. Not that all always are, but you find what you seek. For certain, you don’t find a general hatred of strangers.

Strange prejudices you have against Jay.

David for not blaming the innocent

Welcome to Jay, Florida! I can hear the banjos playing when I read this story. Remember, don’t let the sunset catch you in the area or you could be shot for just being there.

They were shot at first by the people in the truck in there yard with no trespassing signs up minding there own business what would u do if some one came on your property saying they were going to kill you and your family?

    REGARDING:
“Progressive Insurance Co who did replace the windshield , followed by doubling my premiums and telling me I was a risk.”

They figured if someone were trying to kill you, your car was at higher risk. Seems reasonable.

Still, I like Flo from the Progressive commercials.

David thinking even a cave man could do it

nah, in 1910 they had no electricity, no running water, no car most likely, definitely no pavement, no TV or computers to influence their thinking. it’s just a way of calling people backward.

I totally agree with you Horrific. The very last line sums everything up. That’s what’s wrong with this world today. Do they really live like they did 100 years ago up there??? I can’t get that out of my mind. That’s kind of scary just like Dumb & Dumber’s pictures! haha

    Old Marine….
I have been complaining about the hunters here for years.
It just goes on and on.
After calling the cops and the game people I have just given up.
Guns and Neanderthal thinking goes a long way towards crime
    in this town.
People up here on 97 and all the little subdivisions (not all)
but far too many of them live on compounds where the whole
family lives together and they live like they did 100 years ago.
Probably the same people you hear screaming about all their
    freedoms being taken away.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s time for the good people of
this town to take it back. Too many young people today are lawless
and armed and their parents aren’t much better, it’s just that now
DRUGS have been thrown into the mix.

    IDIOTS, BOOZE, DRUGGIES, AND GUNS

Put them in a pen for a good long time

I had a oncoming car shoot a hole in my windshield on Hwy 97 this past summer , just before day light.
I heard the loud pop but didn’t see the hole because of all the bugs on the windshield , plus I was concerned about my wife in the front seat.
By the time I figured out what had happened the car was gone. I did not have my high beam lights on ether.
I reported it to the ECSO there in Molino
them Progressive Insurance Co who did replace the windshield , followed by doubling my premiums and telling me I was a risk.
No tickets in 20 years , never a wreck , this was my 1st claim ever.

I called Geico and got twice the coverage for less than I originally paid Progressive

I wonder if it would have made a difference to these two shooters if they had killed one of the occupants in the vehicle? Would some of their friends or loved ones please ask them and post their answers???? Thank you….
