Quarter Million Dollar Roof Replacement For Ernest Ward Middle Gym

December 17, 2010

A nearly quarter million dollar roof replacement is on the way to two buildings at Ernest Ward Middle School.

The roof of the school’s gym and a small adjacent building will be replaced at a cost of $227,515 by Edwards Roofing of Pensacola. The Escambia County School Board was expected to approve the project at their December 14 regular meeting, but that meeting was postponed until January due to the lack of quorum.

The replacement roofs will have a standard 15-year warranty.  The school gym was constructed in 1978. The smaller adjacent brick building, which housed a weight room and coaches’ offices, was constructed in 1955.

The project was one of many recommended by a district-wide roof survey that was conducted in 2009. The total $364,076  project set for school board approval also includes roof replacements on buildings at Workman Middle School ($23,826), A.K. Suter Elementary School ($33,980) and Oakcrest Elementary ($78,755).

There is nothing wrong with the Carver school. Its a waste of tax payers money to build a new school at Earnest Ward when there is a perfectly good one in Century. I don’t see why everyone had such a problem with Carver. In fact, 4 of the top 5 students in my class came from Carver.

Yea yea David keep talking you know I am right…but whatever you and I both know Century blew that chance. Just saying

    REGARDING:
“Because it was an F school state would not allow it”

Please don’t confuse buildings with a school. The buildings were not F buildings. The performance of the students who were attending at the time led to a low grade. it was closed because it was too expensive for the few who were still attending after being given the chance to go to Byrneville, Bratt and EWMS.

For a while after Hurricane Ivan, Longleaf Elementary School was housed in Belleview Elementary School buildings. A school is the teachers and students (much like the way a church is the members, not the building). I believe one met from 6 am until noon and the other from noon to 6 pm or something like that.

Ernest Ward Middle School could be housed anywhere, including in the vacated buildings in Century. I’m not suggesting it should be done, just saying it COULD be done. There is no state law forbidding it. I don’t think they could house all the students and you’d have to deal with the parents who’re scared of the people of the Town of Century but that’s another matter.

You could also change the start times and put them all in the Ransom Middle School buildings after Ransom’s regular hours, say from 6 PM to 2 AM or so. Nobody would like it and it would be more expensive than simply fixing the roof and heating, but once again, there is no law stopping you.

    David considering silly concepts

Because it was an F school state would not allow it….thank the admin, teachers, parents, students as that was what was to happen but the failing school took care of that. Also I think everyone who has all the answers on here needs to run for supt office while you have all the answers:)

Why not move everyone, teachers and all, to Century. Now there’s a building going to waste.

    regarding:
“THE SCHOOL BOARD IS PAYING EVEN MORE BIG MONEY TO MOVE THE ITEMS FROM A NEW SCHOOLTO A VERY OLD ONE.WE ARE ALL PAYING TAXES ON THIS BAD JUDGEMENT.”

It’s a waste, but it doesn’t matter how new the buildings are if people won’t go there. Unless they’ve changed the laws recently, most of Ernest Ward Middle School buildings will have to be replaced fairly soon because it does not comply with current building requirements, so the new roof on the gym will have company–maybe toward the back like the other writer wanted.

    David looking to the future.

they need to build a new school my son came home last week told me that there is mold in the class rooms and when they had that storm that one week the building is falling apart pieces of the roof is breaking apart .. hello district we need a new school before our children get sick from mold !!!!!!!

  14. ME on December 17th, 2010 4:52 pm

They have replaced they floor once completly if not twice in the last 5 years and the leaky roof would let water get onto the floor and make it bow up (enough to make it look like sombody was underneath it, we students called it the grave of ernest ward) so the new roof is needed so the very expensive floor doesnt have to be replaced…….again!

Oldman ! You didn’t play ball in that gym in 1973. You play ball in the old wood gym that Escambia moved out back before this gym was builted in 1977. The reason I know this is that I installed the plumbing in this gym builded by L & L Contractors. Larry & Lieged Hall.

How bout fixing the heat in there.

They need this roof repaired but why the school board won’t builded a new school on the back side of this property is beyond me. The new school can be built while the school is cession and then the transfer can take place when complete. As for the sports feild arrangements can be made to use the county sports feilds behind them. Just a thought.

I remembered playing ball in that gym in 1973 while Coach Latham office was next door.
