Florida Hunters Could Be Required To Report Every Deer Harvested

December 2, 2010

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is considering new rule proposals requiring all hunters to tag harvested white-tailed deer and report the harvest to the FWC.

However, the commissioners directed staff to provide a menu of options regarding exempt hunters, showing how those hunters would report their harvest. Exempt hunters include individuals 65 and older and 16 and under.

Tagging and reporting game harvests is commonly done in many states, and FWC staff reviewed several other states’ harvest-reporting systems to see what might work well in Florida, according to a FWC news release The agency is seeking to craft a system where hunters would report their harvested deer, to better track where and how many deer are harvested in Florida.

FWC staff presented a draft proposal at five public meetings across the state and gathered input and feedback through an online poll.

The proposed harvest-reporting system would utilize a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week telephone and Internet system, and tags to attach to harvested deer.

Some of the information hunters would have to report includes their customer number, date of harvest, county, method of take, hunting with or without dogs, type of deer (antlered buck, button buck or doe) and number of antler points on bucks. All compiled statewide harvest data would be available to the public online and updated daily, but would not include hunters’ personal information.

“We want to make this system as friendly as possible for Florida’s hunters,” said Cory Morea, FWC biologist and deer management program coordinator. “We need the data to give Florida hunters what many of them have asked for – that is better management of the state’s deer herd, and at a more local level. This will give us one of the tools to enable us to do that.”

The new rules could be approved for final adoption at the February 2011 Commission meeting and would become effective July 1, 2011, and apply to the 2011-12 hunting season.

For more detailed information on the proposed harvest-reporting system, go to MyFWC.com/Deer.

What part of this post has anything to do with hunting illegally? Read people!
This rule is as good as the Obama health care plan. Umm hello, yes? Ya i just killed a deer i like to waste my minutes to report it. Get real we dont need more control. Make it like they do in Georgia. You get 10 does and two bucks. It’s pretty sad when we have to leave our state to shoot a nice deer. There are way to many does to bucks. And dont tell me the bucks move at night. I’ve been out at night shining and you can clearly see that there are more does then bucks. At least a 10 to 1 ratio. Lets start allowing our bucks to grow. And stop trying to control us.

Happy citizen, I sure would have loved to have seen that.
I would one time like to see the good guys win over the bad hunters
who don’t care about any living thing including their neighbors or their
    neighbors children.

    I could have used a good smile……

I moved here for the nature and animals out in the country and found
more animals than I know what to do with……

Well my work has paid off, the night hunters that were harrassing us have finally got caught. They were running deer down with thier trucks in the peanut fields and the Game Wardens cought them in the act. Stupid Night Hunters even had does in the truck along with prescription drugs.
    Thanks, for the laugh…

Back in the days of Daniel Boone, there were not as many people, plenty of wildlife for everyone, and no game laws~ they hunted or fished when they needed food, the people in a settlement tried to live peacefully with their neighbors, and tried to get along with the Native Americans. And when hellions came along, they soon moved on or were fatally punished for their unacceptable behavior. Kinda like in the O.T. Bible times, when sin came in the ‘camp’, they weren’t just punished, they were eradicated~ didn’t won’t
anything left to contaminate the rest. Or like in dawgs~years ago, if a hound ever got into a chicken yard and killed a chicken or ate some eggs, you could never break him of the habit, so he was simply done away with.

So, seems like we have complicated things in our attempt to civilize those who do not wish to be civil. I know we cannot go back, but when life was simpler, seems like people were a lot nicer to their neighbors. I guess it all goes back to “love your neighbor as you love yourself” and if the Love of God is not in you, you cannot love yourself and therefore you cannot love anyone! So, with this in mind, may God’s love flow through us to one another during this holy season and throughout the year.

Here is proper herd management. Shoot’em all, shoot’em all anytime, anyplace anywhere, any sex, day or night, no license, no permit, no age limit. Shoot’em till every last one of them is gone. Like eradicated from the earth. Keep shooting them so the only one left is a stuffed one in the Smithsonian Museum. THEN maybe you could drive down to the mailbox without hitting one.

Thank you Mr. Green! You put into words so eloquently what I had thought! But you usually do have a way with words and I enjoy your thoughts on the subjects!
I remember “poor Howard” LOL! My son still sings it from time to time! Keep up the good work of bringing ’sunshine’ into our lives.
And to you…the monster, you are probably right, but hopefully you are not one of them.
My grandfather had a motto he lived by~”Live and let live” and he lived by that…he felt that what someone else had was theirs and what he had was his. He didn’t bother what belonged to someone else and they had better not bother what belonged to him. It worked for him, and I try to live the same way, but if someone else bothers what we have worked hard to have, I have no problem with pressing charges…let the law handle them, but if all else fails, retaliate!!! Thank goodness when we have trespassers, we can shoot and if more people did that and defended what was theirs, after a few episodes, they would think twice before doing it again! It’s the times we are living in and they are hard and may get worse, BUT that does NOT give people the right to take what is not theirs.

Let me guess we have to by the TAGS to!!! “Hunting permit” $17.50 ,” Mgmt area permit” $27.00 , “Muzzleloading permit” $ 5.50 ,”Duck permit” $ 17.50 only good for 30 days. ” Fishing permit” $ 17.50. New this year “Deer permit” $ 5.50. Thats not all boat registration $ 23.50, trailer tag $ 32.50 I have not harvested a deer yet! But there’s more Gas for the truck $ 30.00 , Gas for the boat $12.00 , Bag of ice $3.00 OK I’m all set to go kill the big one, I back down to the landing and i get stuck on our very good boat ramps that we have on the north end you know alot of work goes into them from all the money the new tags and deer permist make.I get to my stand and a doe walks up “NOPE” can not kill one of them!! A turkey walks up “NOPE” did not buy a turkey stamp. A spake walks up “NOPE” got to be 5 inches above the head. After several trips and several times to the gas pumps I kill the big one, I take him to the meet house and have him processed and the man says that will be $89.00 so total for the year $281.00 so be sure to thank the fish and wildlife commission of all there proposals. This is a true story and they win I will not do it again I’m done…

  10. Nature lover on December 5th, 2010 9:10 am

Horrific~ I’m sure people around you may be doing exactly what you have said, but I assure you that EVERYONE does NOT hunt stupid nor shoot at everything that moves whenever and whereever they choose. Yes, there will always be some who try to break every rule in the book just to prove they can. Some people never learned to respect other peoples’ property nor their rights, they never learned to respect authority nor abide by the law of the land. They probably don’t have anything and wouldn’t take care of it if you gave it to them. I’m sorry for the problems you have and with the lowlife you have to contend with, but for the record, there are many hunters who tend their land, providing food for the wildlife during the year, who selectively harvest ~waiting until the appropriate time and for the right deer to present itself. It’s not about slaudering wildlife, but harvesting a few each year to have for food and keeping their population under control. You have your right to be disgruntled, but please do not categorize ALL hunters by those you have issues with.

  11. Horrific! on December 4th, 2010 2:07 pm

What are you all getting worked up about anyway.
You won’t follow the law….most of you don’t get hunting licenses anyway
and you sure don’t follow the law.

I have plenty of gun holes in my house to prove it.
You hunt day and night too close to homes and take guns and fire them
at ppl on their posted property and you don’t pay any attention to when, where, and what your suppose to bag. That is why the deer here look to be the size of DOGS!

You all scream about too much government in your life and your rights.
How about everyone elses besides ppl who kill small animals and infringe
    on everyone elses rights….

    What about US!

  12. nudo on December 4th, 2010 12:47 pm

Until Florida opens up there doe season expect the small bucks, the crop damage, and increased auto accidents. I just don’t understand the reasoning behind the doe limit…should be limits on the bucks instead.

  13. Beth on December 4th, 2010 12:26 am

you know its not that the government is trying to get into your buisness so much as their trying to predict herd sizes, movement and current death rates due to hunting to help hunters and Game Wardens keep up with how to manage the hunting season. It might end up helping some people out, especially those who are over run with deer, helping to manage the deer population.

  14. robert on December 3rd, 2010 1:05 pm

I hunt a small piece of land in Walnut Hill and in one season out of the same stand i counted 76 deer and only positive of 3 of those being bucks which i harvested 2 of the 3. i think Florida needs the same rules as Alabama that you can kill a doe a day the entire season long for a couple of years in order to try to start controlling the deer population. if not the entire season just let us have the bow season and the Thanksgiving gun seaon plus the 7 days we already have as legal days to take doe out of the population.

  15. retiredandlovin'it2 on December 3rd, 2010 8:25 am

Just for the record, I feed deer year ’round through feeders, food plots and our farmer’s crops. I hunt an average of 3 days a week during hunting season near the feeders and food plots, and have killed up to 4 or 5 bucks a year…0 Doe, because I can’t get ‘doe’ permits. My farmer looses 15-20 acres a year to deer grazing. He begs me to take some out…they are destroying his crops!I have tried to get the predidation permit, but because I do not own 650 acres was denied! I think land owners should be allowed to protect their crops from deer whose population has gotten out of hand and it should be easier for them to get permits. There is no alcohol involved..drinking and hunting is not allowed on my property. Most hunting clubs I know of don’t allow it either.I remember when there were no deer in our county, but now there are more deer than ever before in the last 100+ years! Matter of fact, they are in herds now and we, personally, have counted as many as 17 at one time. Tell me that many can’t devour the crops in the fields. Oh, about the 5 deer, I gave one to a man (and his wife)who is now handicapped, 2 more deer halves to neighbors and have shared the meat that we process with friends who are not able to hunt. We are not greedy with it, just like to share what we have fed and the Lord has blessed us with. We even planted 20 lbs of peas just for them to graze on to help save the farmer’s crops!

  16. Jane on December 3rd, 2010 8:06 am

Here’s a thought: They can’t accurately track the number of deer killed by hunters now, how do they plan on enforcing this? They do not have enough Game Wardens now!

  17. concerned citizen on December 2nd, 2010 9:19 pm

Why do the hunting clubs get to kill so many does per buck? They are not killing the required amount of does for bucks killed. If you do not have your own private land you just do not get to hunt. The night hunters around my house get to kill anything they want. If you are a law abiding citizen you should not have to tell the FWC whatyou do.

  18. huh on December 2nd, 2010 9:13 pm

Thought they elected a Republican Gov in Florida, aren’t they supposed to want less government in your life? Looks like the answer is no

  19. RanDola on December 2nd, 2010 8:28 pm

Oh, and for those who may wonder… I do not, never have, nor ever will hold a “hunting” license. Sue me!

  20. Dola on December 2nd, 2010 8:26 pm

Ok, let me sum it for the overall opinion on this matter: STUPID, REALLY STUPID, and you guessed it, STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the way, how exactly are you going to know how many deer I kill, have killed, or may kill in the future? Just asking? STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Big Chief on December 2nd, 2010 7:22 pm

It will never work here. Many locals are too yokel too understand how this type program could benefit our hunting.

All they hear is big brother interfering with their god givin’ rights.

    Good luck FWC….

  22. Aunt Kim on December 2nd, 2010 6:16 pm

The insurance companies should be lobbying for UNLIMITED hunting for a couple of seasons to thin the population. It”s much cheaper than killing them with our front bumpers.

  23. jw on December 2nd, 2010 3:01 pm

Absolutely NOT! What is this place? The Soviet Union???

  24. Citizen on December 2nd, 2010 1:31 pm

This is just another money grab. They will have hire more people to process and study all these reports which in turn will cost you more money for your license ect and so on…. It’s not like the deer population is under populated, just drive down the road and count them, any moron with the ability to count can figure out that there we are way over populated.

  25. YELLER HAMMER on December 2nd, 2010 1:11 pm

You no I hunt in LaForesta properties and we are required to do this system now, What I don’t no is how the game management can control this on private properties. I no that other states have tagging procedures and limits but this system won’t work due to the limits the state has in effect now. As for hunting on food plots and or feeders this works well because we can take the game out in a selected manor to help control the heard, we are also issued doe tags to help control the deer population, we are required two does to one buck average.

  26. xpeecee on December 2nd, 2010 12:29 pm

Some elected officials still don’t get it…
The message in the last election was clear:
    * We don’t want socialism
    * We dont want more government
    * We don’t want more taxes (as in septic tank inspections and deer control)
    * We don’t want illegal aliens getting a free ride
    * We don’t want more gun control
    * We don’t want to depart from the Christian principals that our country was founded upon
For those elected officials who didn’t get the message – – – you will lose your job.

  27. Concerned Citizen on December 2nd, 2010 12:26 pm

    To Local Resident:
When I lived in the Midwest, you had to tag any deer in your possession, even if it was one killed by motor vehicle. If you were found with deer that you didn’t have a tag for, you would be fined and face possible jail time. I haven’t read the proposed legislation for Florida, but it may indeed be the same.

  28. local resident of Walnut Hill on December 2nd, 2010 12:09 pm

Will it be necessary to “tag” those deer that choose suicide on our roads?

  29. You Who on December 2nd, 2010 10:29 am

This is a way of justify the 5 dollar stamp this year. Just more big Government. Now we will have to hire more people to keep the records for this. Boy do we have a bunch of IDIOTS in Tallehassee.
MORE TAXES IS THE NORM IN TODAYS WORLD AND THERE’S NO NEED FOR IT
Soon the day will come that the Taxpayer’s will have enough and revolt and take over the Government and that day could not come soon enough.

The State has the money US they will raise tour cost again for dog size deer!!!

  31. BMM on December 2nd, 2010 8:49 am

Has any one at the GFC really thought about the cost of this to the state ? Since the state has no money to waste on a project like this.

  32. sambo on December 2nd, 2010 8:38 am

The problem with our deer season is we need more doe days not more regulation. We need at least 30 days where it is legal to shoot does. If nothing else just for 2 seasons then FWC could decide what to do from there, but I think we would see a big difference in our deer population. As to hunting deer over feeders and foodplots you can be thankful for every deer that is killed becouse that is one that you wont hit with your car. Also farmers have a hard enough time trying to get a crop to produce with out the deer eating 50 acres of their crops.

  33. Scott on December 2nd, 2010 8:32 am

Well when the FWC learns HOW TO MANAGE a deer herd it may work until then it is a attempt to justify the increase in the permits. We pay for what services 0. Doe 2 Buck ratio of 20:1? 1 antler 5″ long?. Deer tagging system will cost us more money for a wasted effort.

You want to Managed the herd
    1. Leave the bag limit the same.
    2. Allow taking of anterless deer by bow (not crossbow) the whole season.
    3. 2-3 doe tags per Quota permit.
    4. 4 pt or better rule State wide.
    5. Allowing us to feed the deer pre-season on WMA to provided the deer with what they need for horn growth (must be removed 6 wks before season opens) since the STATE OF FLORIDA has no clue how to manage a deer herd.

  39. master of the Harvest on December 2nd, 2010 6:51 am

Doesn’t anyone “kill” deer anymore?…or must we “harvest” them? I’m sure they enjoy being harvested much more than being killed. Hunting has evolved into shooting fish in a barrel anyway…, with all the feeders and food plots…where’s the sport? Mainly just an excuse to go out in the woods and get drunk…then brag about it on Monday morning. Bring it on!
