Work Continues On New Molino Library, Community Center And Museum

November 1, 2010

seeplansclick.jpgWork is continuing toward the renovation of the old Molino School into a community center, library and museum.

The architects, DAG, have completed the programming and schematic design phases. Escambia County Facilities Management is reviewing the 50 percent construction documents.

The drawings show one section of the main building converted into a library with both a children’s and adult area, computers and thousands of linear feet of book shelving. The old auditorium will remain a community auditorium with available seating for 242 people. The rest of the building will include a museum, classrooms and meeting rooms.

In May, 2009, commissioners approved the $400,000 purchase of the building from the Escambia County School District. Commissioners have since approved a budget of $2,089,156 from Local Option Sales Tax monies for the renovation project. DAG Architects is being paid $214,580 to design the renovations.

molinoschooltour99.jpgThe school campus includes 9.66 acres and four buildings — the largest of which is 16,630 square feet.

First opened in 1939, the Molino School closed in 2003 when the new Molino Park Elementary School consolidated Molino Elementary and Barrineau Park Elementary.

Spending 2.5 million on a library, and the residents up here having to send supplies to the existing schools for the students……..because it aint in the budget???? Is this Molino, DC or what? Now, the county will be asking for book donations, restroom supplies, and who knows what. I do know this, I am waiting to cast my ballot for a different manager (commiss) . Heck…, by then we’ll be having to donate ballot paper. From Washington to Molino….same crap!!!!! Just a different place. And p.s…… Thanks Miss Fran for helping Rick Scott , one more Crook get into office. That’s just what we needed…..one more…….. I need another drink…….

I went to Molino for all my 1 through 8 and i am thrilled that my nieces and nephews will have the chance to learn there and that the county has utilized the building and has cone something for this end of the county. i hope that they keep it open for a long time.Molino has a fascinating history to it and the museum should be very interesting to go to.

I am glad that north end finally receives some kind of benefits whether it be a Library/community center/museum or a park in Bratt because the money will be throw away on some other unnessecary project elsewhere. Although, how can almost 2.5 million from SALES TAX REVENUE revenue be justified when there are so many people are out of a job, losing their homes, and barely able to buy food. Something is terribly wrong with our government today!!! This is a prime example of why the economy is in the condition it is in now.
If people and government don’t change their priorities, our children and grandchildren may have to live at these community centers or parks.
How much money do you think a community center or park generates for the communities economy? Nothing, only more expenses.

Thrilled to hear this beautiful old building will be preserved and for such a great use. So many of the old buildings in our area are now gone – replaced by nondescript ugly cookie cutter buildings. Good job!

I am thrilled to see this happening here in Molino! When I moved here one of my first questions was what is that building and what is it used for? I was appalled that it just sat there, wanting someone to use it again! And now it will have wonderful uses for people here to enjoy…I hope for a long time to come! This is positively wonderful! I’m not sure who pushed for it, but THANK YOU!

I am praying that the powers that be will consider a “real” bike path along 97A now that some planning is happening in this location.

So glad this is moving forward. I am happy to know that these halls will nuture children and their families once again. Love the photo of the hall. Many joyous memories have taken place there. Children learning the joy of reading, new teachers starting their career, long time teachers reaching retirement, parents making friends while volunteering, just to name a few. Once again this beautiful school will be filled with the sounds of people making memories.

Glad to see that work is being done. The wheels turn slowly but there is hope that next year there will be parts of the building in use. Please keep us informed.
