Driver Cited After Highway 99 Crash With Injuries

November 15, 2010

Two people were injured in a two vehicle wreck Friday night in Molino, including the driver of a vehicle charged in connection with the accident.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Richard Daniel Brown, Jr., 52, of McDavid was northbound on Highway 99 near Crabtree Church Road about 8:30 p.m. when he lost control of his 2001 Chevrolet pickup. Brown crossed into path of a northbound 2007 Pontiac driven by Samantha Elizabeth Luker, 22, of Molino. After the initial collision, Brown’s pickup overturned onto its left side.

Luker was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital  in serious condition. Her passenger, Holly Lynn Digmon, 24, of McDavid, received minor injuries and was not transported to the hospital. Brown received minor injuries and was transported to West Florida Hospital.

Brown was charged with careless driving, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. According to the FHP, everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat belt, and alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

The Molino and Walnut Hill Stations of Escambia Fire Rescue responded to the crash, along with Escambia County EMS.

Speeding and the width are both main factors for this happening on this road! The road is too narrow and then when you have a speeding vehicle that is driven by someone who can’t keep control this is what happens! I have been run off this road at least four times by people that can’t stay in their own lane. Twice in one day! I avoid this road and go all the way around and get on Hwy 29 to 97 if I’m heading up that way. When I’m forced to drive on it I slow way down when a car is coming toward me so that “if” I have to leave the road I will survive!

My mother was alomst hit head on by a dump truck on this road a few years ago, I have lived my whole life here, and the traffic has trippled in the last ten years. I guess that nothing will be done about these narrow rough worn out roads until a county commisioner or one of their close friends move out here! I guess that there are not enough $300,000 to warrant the expense, like there is on the west end of Barrineau Park rd. These roads destroy tires, and front end parts of every vehicle that travels down it, we the citizens need to ban together and demand that actions be taken to correct this situation!

So when does the roads being to small have anything to do with someone crossing over into on comin traffic

I traveled this road about 2 hours before this accident and passed a car head on about the same spot and ran partially off the road myself. I do not drink and was not on the cell phone . This road is too narrow, in need of repair and has alot of curves. Please be “extra careful” if you have to use this roadway, especially after dark.

I live on this road also. One problem with Hwy 99 is the road is too narrow. It has ruts ,washouts, etc…. This road is traveled by loggers and ,numerous times they have ran me off the road…This road should have been on top of the list for repaving 10+years ago…

I seen a Trooper out there this Saturday evening getting the semi off the road. I am glad the highway patrol come got that busted truck out of there before someone got killed.

i agree with paul….this is not the roads fault….the only one to blame for these things are the drivers

My granddaughter was the driver of the car, and she was hurt very bad. People need to know what they are talking about when they comment on things that have happened or put here on northescambia. Her car is totaled and thank God she and her friend are alive. Yes people need to slow down and pay attention to their driving. If you do not know the circumstances do not make assumptions or comments.

Try driver inattention, and driving too fast. Works majority of the time.

Be cautious further south on 99. There is a semi truck on the north lane that is broke down and parked about 2 feet into the highway. He has some little red hazzard markers on the hwy, but meeting another vehicle you can hardly see the reflectors. Two cars cannot pass by the truck without hitting eachother or the truck. it was there last night and it is still there tonight.

    i’m out of words……..

I agree with the last comment, I to live on this road… it is horrible! We have wreck seems like every week. Its pretty bad when you can not go the speed limit permitted on the road due to the conditions of the road. I believe 99 should have been repaved instead of the waste of money on 97.

Since I live on this road I can verify that all the things Terri listed are factors in wrecks anywhere BUT on this road speed and terrible road conditions are a BIG factor. If you don’t believe it just take a drive on it one day.

  19. Big B little ill on November 13th, 2010 8:59 am

Just wondering…What kind of truck was it? Did the truck hit something else? It looks totaly demolished. Praying for their recovery.

It used to be that falling asleep at the wheel was the major cause of head on collosions, that and drinking, now it could be using a phone, reading a text, writing a tect, changing a radio, finding a CD and the list goes on and on.Has technology become such a distraction or are some peoplle just plain dumb?

  21. Walnut Hill Roy on November 13th, 2010 6:47 am

Must need another traffic light, that always seems to be some people’s answer!

  22. ok on November 13th, 2010 6:44 am

well, the girl in the car that was struck head-on has a fractured pelvis!

  23. daniel on November 13th, 2010 12:51 am

i have yet to see how this is the roads fault

  24. OldMarine on November 13th, 2010 12:26 am

seems to be a lot of people up here that do not have the ability to keep their car in their lane.

Must be the roads fault again somehow !

  25. EMD on November 12th, 2010 11:23 pm

It seems like our roads have become disassembly lines that operate continously.
