Police: Man Hit By Truck After Stealing Bottle Of Wine From Store

November 24, 2010

An Atmore man is recovering after being hit by car after allegedly stealing a bottle of wine from a local convenience store.

The Atmore Police Department released more information Tuesday about the accident about 7:15 Friday night that injured Marvin L. Russell, 34. Police said Russell entered the Kangaroo Express store at Main and Howard streets where he attempted to purchase a bottle of wine but did not have enough money. He returned to a cooler and then exited the store with the bottle of wine hanging out of his jacket pocket. Atmore Police said he did not pay for the wine.

Russell then ran east into the path of a 2005 Ford F150 driven by Eric V. Lewis, 38, of Atmore who was traveling south of North Main Street.

Russell was transported by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital and then transferred by LifeFlight to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola with serious injuries. He has since been released from the hospital.

Atmore Police did not say if Russell was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

if people only stole what they actually needed, there would be very little theft

The sad truth of the matter is~ there are soooo many people out there who have placed such low values on their lives. Had this person been killed, he would have traded his life for a bottle of wine, as do soo many for alcohol or drugs. I can’t imagine the state of mind these people are in~ nor do I want to, but, it’s sad to think of people who probably don’t know the Lord and have no one to turn to to help them through difficult times. We have sooo much to be thankful for…and I thank God He’s there for us when we call upon him. Life is not always fair, but God is good!

    ■You Just Gotta Laugh,
About 20 years ago I read the paper every day – then one day there was an article about a liquer store robbery. It seems this guy had been robbed like 22 times, so, he rigged up a shotgun under the register. Soon he had a gun sticking in his face again and the guy wanting all his money – even the money under the counter. The owner shot the guy – through the counter front. There was a picture of the robber, in the hospital, facing all sorts of charges, (the owner facing none) but he was smiling because his lawyer talked him into sueing the owner of the store for his hospital bills and $100,000.00 to boot, because he had no warning signs up about the shotgun under the counter….
The article said he would probably get it because it would cost the owner an arm and a leg for lawyer fees. Course the thief’s lawyer was on contingency.

    I quit reaqding the paper.

    @whine n dine
Forgive me. It was callous of me to forget the bottle of wine.
Accept my sincere apologies. Shortsighted of me for sure.

kalin i betcha lifeflight doesnt ask if you have insurance or not…but he got to the hospital and they ask you there and that is when he was released…no insurance, you are out on the street….but yes we taxpayers will pick up the tab for the lifelight ride, the hospital visits, the ambulance ride, if there was any investigation by police, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum.

That life flight will cost him about $10,000.00 (actual cost from Brewton to Baptist Hospital. Maybe less from Atmore. Expensive bottle of wine. Yes?

  13. kalin on November 24th, 2010 8:30 am

not enough money for wine, steals it, hit by truck, lifeflighted (but not enough money for wine)….guess honest working taxpayers will pay for that…he had serious injruies enough to be lifeflighted, but then released…something doesn’t sound right here…..

So if this turns out like most of these cases some classy ambulance chaser out there will read this story and decide the thief should press charges against the store (for not just giving him the wine to begin with thus forcing him to run) and the truck driver (for not yielding the right of way to a pedestrian). The next thing you know he’ll get an 100K settlement because the store and the truck driver don’t want to spend their hard earned money to defend a ridiculous lawsuit….I’m just sayin’.

Headlines could have read ” BOTTLE OF WINE GETS HIT BY TRUCK AFTER BEING STOLEN…TURNS BACK INTO WATER ” The lords works miracles with water and wine…maybe this will turn out to be another miracle

Terrible this has to happen….poor soul….guess the wine was his best friend….now he is hurt…his best friend now is the pain killers he is getting. This should show people where lifes path can lead if you choose the wrong way. No doubt he is broken up…who will take care of him when he returns home…. 3 meals a day and waited on hand and foot in the hospital…a life wasted thus far

He has been released from the hospital already. Maybe he learned a lesson.
