Election For Century Council Seat Tomorrow

November 8, 2010

Tuesday is runoff election day in Century with an incumbent up against a political newcomer for a town council seat.

Incumbent Henry Hawkins and Jacke Johnston are seeking the Century Town Council’s Seat 3.

During the October primary election for the seat, Hawkins, a Pensacola State College GED instructor and retired Air Force staff sergeant, received 44.55 percent of the vote — shy of the 50 percent needed for a win. Johnston, a teacher at Byrneville Elementary School, received 32.71 percent of the vote, while Robert Lasher, an Edward D. Jones financial adviser, finished third with 22.74 percent.

In October, Sandra McMurray Jackson was elected to the Seat 5 on the council currently held by Sharon Scott, who did not see re-election. Jackson is the owner of Jackson-McMurray Funeral Services in Century. She defeated retired insurance agent Annie Carter Savage by just eight votes — 164 to 156.

Polls will be open at the Century Town Hall from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday for residents of the Town of Century only.

Hay Oversite, you are correct. I went to GOOGLE. Looked up Pensacola State College. Went to Staff and Faculty, and guess what. NOBODY named HAWKINS works there. Does old HENRY have another name that he uses when he is an “Instructor at Pensacola State College”? Just wondering…..

Did you guys see the Public Forum held last Thursday night? Let’s just say Johnston whooped Hawkins. Her answers were spot on, honest, researched, and spoken from the heart. Hawkins’ spent his time putting down the council, the mayor, and the citizens. He said the citizens of Century lack pride. Is he living in the same area as I am? He also claimed to be the “positive” person on the council. I just had to laugh. I liked one thing Johnston said the best. She said she wasn’t a “yes man” like others have speculated. But, she carefully pointed out that she wasn’t a “no man” either. She said she was a “vote the way that would benefit ALL of the citizens (wo)man”. Perfect answer. And just so you know, Hawkins said he would try to attend the meetings…depending on what his schedule consisted of. He is a paid person! He is getting paid to not attend the meetings or to show up to them tardy. And the only thing he votes “yes” to is adjourning the meeting. Go figure!

As you vote, just remember how many stories you have seen on northescambia.con and in the tri-city ledger where Henry Hawkins does one of these things:

    1) Makes a fool out of Century
    2) Votes no on spending a few hundred dollars to get MILLION dollar grants
    3) Does not show up for a meeting
    4) Makes a fool out of Century

Funny thing that I couldn’t find Hawkins’ name in Pensacola State College’s faculity roster, but I did find him in the Escambia County Clerk of the Court’s records as being sued and indebt to the government for not paying taxes.
