Suspect Arrested In Domestic Incident That Led To Shot Fired At Deputy Near Northview

October 28, 2010

The man wanted on domestic violence charges in an incident near Northview High School where a shot was allegedly fired at a deputy is behind bars in Alabama.

Marvin Anthony Haynie, 46, was arrested Thursday afternoon on the Poarch Creek Indian Reservation by Poarch Creek Tribal Police. He is being extradited back to Florida this afternoon. No charges have been filed at this time in connection with the shot fired at the deputy.

Haynie will face a domestic violence battery charged once returned to Escambia County, Florida.

Below is the NorthEscambia.com story from Wednesday morning on the domestic violence incident and shooting.

At least one shot was fired at an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputy early Wednesday morning during a manhunt near Northview High School.

Deputies had established a perimeter around York Road as they searched for a domestic violence suspect identified as Marvin Anthony Haynie, 46. At least one shot was reportedly fired from a wooded area toward a deputy’s cruiser, with the round striking the dirt road directly in front of the car. The deputy was not injured and did not return fire.

After searching for Haynie for a couple of hours after the shot was fired, the manhunt was called off.

The incident began with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic violence complaint in the 3000 block of York Road about 7:30 Tuesday night. Haynie’s wife told deputies that he was outside in their vehicle drinking a beer and playing the radio loudly. When she asked him to turn down the radio, she stated that he threw CD’s at her. After exiting the vehicle, he then threw an empty beer can at his wife, striking her in the upper arm, according to the ECSO report. She was not seriously injured.

When deputies arrived, the wife told them that Haynie had gone to a neighbor’s house; the neighbors told deputies that Haynie had fled into a nearby wooded area. Deputies searched the area and at least two homes for Haynie, but were unable to locate him.

At about 11 p.m., the female victim again called the Sheriff’s Office, reporting that Haynie was back at the residence, wet and covered in scratches from running through the woods. The wife alleged that Haynie took beer, Lortab and other medication, and departed in an unknown direction.

Deputies set up a perimeter and called for the assistance of an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit about 11:40 p.m.

About 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, the shot was reportedly fired at the deputy. Deputies maintained their perimeter and continued their search with the K-9.

By 1:45 a.m., deputies returned to the mobile home where the victim reportedly lived and escorted her out of the area to spend the rest of the night elsewhere. By 2 a.m., the manhunt was called off.

Haynie was described as a white male about 5-foot 7-inches tall, 165 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a light-colored t-shirt, and blue jean shorts.

York Road is a short, dead-end dirt road east off Pine Barren Road directly opposite Northview High School.

Further details were not available Wednesday morning.

  8. Horrific! on October 28th, 2010 4:20 pm

Why would you ever shoot at a guy who looks like that.
I’m glad he didn’t get him.

It’s nice that our cops look like they are big strong capable ppl now lets hope
they all act like that and do the jobs we hire them for.
I wish we could pay the ones who do the job right what they deserve.
If so much money wasn’t wasted on over blown bureaucrats I bet we could.

I sure don’t understand WHY budgets were cut for schools and police force.
Nothing like telling the american ppl that you don’t give a fig about their
safety or their childrens education. WOW how to politicians live with themselves…..

    just an old soldier,
maybe you didnt hear, they are pretty sure he shot at a deputy while out of his gourd on beer and lortab last nite and as far as we know he has yet to be apprehended. situations like this can escalate quicker than a chicken on a june bug and so what if he isnt taking pot shots at students at the moment, what is to say he wont? look how he treats his family or is this acceptable to you? does this guy have kids of his own? is it cool for him to throw things at them to or just the wife? he is not in his right mind due to the alcohol and pill mixture and here he lives next door to northview and everything is just hunky dory? no it is not!

  13. Erin on October 28th, 2010 11:23 am

an empty beer can? really? I’ve had worse thrown at me and I didn’t call the cops! maybe she should learn to stick up for herself! so what if he’s drunk, that just means he’s more likely to fall down. and if all else fails, use that pretty little gun he had and shoot HIM!!! its called self defense.

“The incident began with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic violence complaint in the 3000 block of York Road about 7:30 Tuesday night”

    and

“By 2 a.m., the manhunt was called off.”

I didn’t realize that classes at the school ran so late as to warrant all the calls for it being “locked down” due to this incident.

Also – ECSO…if you’re going to wear body armor on a manhunt against an armed person that has already shot at you, why leave the head so exposed? Where’s the Kevlar pot? Just a suggestion…but Murphy’s Laws of Combat always kick in at just the wrong time.

molino jim brings up a good point…who is responsible for closing a school when there is a dangerous situation within say, a mile of a school. is it the law enforcement agency, in this case the sheriff’s office? is it the school superintendent? is it the principal? as more and more idiots go over the deep end on drugs and alcohol in the north end, our schools had better be going through the drill as to what exactly the plan is in order to keep the kiddos safe in case of emergency? was this guy apprehended i wonder? to think he lives so close by, with a gun and on beer and lortabs. craziness.

  16. Horrific! on October 28th, 2010 7:26 am

I support them on this except they should have closed the school if they
believed this nut job on beer and dope actually fired a gun.,…..

Who is taking care of our children??????
I don’t have children in school here, but many do and these are the
children of this county and I support all of them……..

NEXT TIME CLOSE THE DAG GUM SCHOOL

  17. molino jim on October 28th, 2010 7:11 am

This started at 7:30 PM (NIGHT TIME FOLKS) and was broken off that NIGHT. Did the school need to be locked down? NO. The s/o broke off the search that NIGHT. If it had been a car chase all the experts would question it. GIVE THE L/E CREDIT FOR DOING WHAT WAS RIGHT.

  18. why on October 28th, 2010 6:32 am

why is everyone pounding the police here? man you people have it all figured out and i say that with exceptions to a few. if the police would have shot this guy and killed him then you would have said ‘OH MY GOD, THEY SHOT HIM FOR THROWING AN EMPTY BEER CAN AT HIS WIFE’ come on people support our law enforcement, IF and i stress ‘IF’ you know how to

  19. Steve on October 27th, 2010 9:18 pm

Old Marine, you sound like you have it all figured out. Have you met Mr. Haynie. Have you been around him when he’s drunk. Now add Lortab to the beer. Do you have any idea what that will do to a person. Does your brain here what your mouth is saying, so to speak as the comedian once said.Old Marine, feel free to come on up and babysit anytime you want, bring your ear plugs.Come on, back fire. Are you that gullable. Oh yeah, a backfire and then an acorn drop.Happens all the time. NOTT. Call Spielberg, he needs your help on his next movie. And don’t think a rifle shot couldn’t reach the school. It can. It only takes one freak shot to get through to ruin the lives of many.

OldMarine get a life the Guy did this

  21. OldMarine on October 27th, 2010 6:23 pm

always 2 sides to a story , nothing was said that he had a gun or came home to get a gun. he just may have needed some beer and radio because he had a nagging wife and it makes that annoying sound go away.

just because she says this happened you get armed cops hunting you ? She could have put ear plugs in and left the man alone.

  22. David Huie Green on October 27th, 2010 5:13 pm

    REGARDING:
“I bet a car backfired and an acorn hit the dirt road so they assumed he shot, why would you shoot at a cop if the only thing you did was throw an empty beer can and some cds?”

Always possible but how often do you hear a car backfire these days? And that assumes officers don’t know the sound of a gun shot and that a car capable of backfiring was out in the wooded area. Seems unlikely even though possible.

As to why we would shoot at a law enforcement officer: most of us WOULDN’T. They have a poor sense of humor when lead is flying their way and they have been trained to shoot back. The fact that someone seems to have done so brings into question the mental state involved. Sounds like a dangerous situation.

Even with all that and concerning need for lockdown: lots of trees between York and school, unlikely to hit anyone that far away even if people were shooting and not antique mud bogging cars backfiring.

    David for sobriety
    and nonviolent responses when possible

  26. art on October 27th, 2010 1:16 pm

so who fired the shot? thanks for the update. hope this guy has no access to beer and/or lortab at least until they catch him. how ridiculous that a family squabble can get so out of hand when drugs are introduced, esp alcohol. so destructive and dangerous in the wrong hands. sad story. teach out to rehab dude! but he may not have any choice if he is indeed the guy who took a shot at the deputy’s car…not cool. that has got to be prison time right there. now what is his family going to do now? celebrate? the wife did the right thing by calling police, you never know when someone may snap whne they are hyped up on drugs.

Let me just say if anything happens to my son (at Northview High School) due to this man running loose in the vacinity because the “chase was called off” for whatever reason….a call to Fred Levins will be made! JHad I known this information before he left for school this morning-he also would have stayed home. This is crazy! Does no one worry about our children anymore??

  28. barrineau on October 27th, 2010 11:32 am

By the way how far can a 46 year old drunk pill popper run anyway.

  29. barrineau on October 27th, 2010 11:29 am

A couple of weeks ago they shut down Ernest Ward and gave no reason ..at all. And less than 1/8 of a mile away from NHS a man tries to shoot POLICE and school is open as usual . Law inforcement has not caught him yet ……and school is still open? I kept my son home today just for this reason . Wow… sounds like Malcolm Thomas would maybe have something to say about this. I have children at both these schools ,and I am a little more than confused.

  30. CW on October 27th, 2010 10:04 am

This man has a well known history, most people in the area are aware of who he is.

  31. 357s@w on October 27th, 2010 9:54 am

most domestic violence end up with the law getting hurt. back in the day . the law would give the fight time to cool off. next time just let the DOGS OUT. good luck ECS.

  32. ha on October 27th, 2010 8:28 am

they’ll lock down a middle school because of a curious object, but have a man on the loose, armed and dangerous, right across from the school, and just go on about our day….something’s a little off on this!

  33. one normal person on October 27th, 2010 8:09 am

Why would you call a manhunt off by a suspect who shot at a cop other than the reason that he was to dangerous to go after, but so close to a high school, makes it that much more dangerous and a better reason to get more officers to find him.

  34. John R. on October 27th, 2010 7:29 am

If he is still on the loose, is Northview High School on lockdown or closed?

  35. Horrific! on October 27th, 2010 6:45 am

I presume if it was domestic violence then the victim knows who the perp.
was……so there really shouldn’t be an issue as to who their looking for.
It’s just a matter of time and again another neanderthal goes down………..

YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CAN’T HIDE……

  36. art on October 27th, 2010 6:17 am

are you kidding me? the guy roughs up his wife, flees into the woods, then shoots at a sheriff’s deputy from the woods. hope they find him soon and lock him up. he has a weapon and from last night’s actions it is clear he is dangerous. and this is all happening right next door to northview! the kids are scheduled for class today are they not? if i had a kid at that high school i would keep them home til they catch this guy! he has a gun and he is obviously a threat.

  37. Oversight on October 27th, 2010 5:42 am

How about giving us the suspect’s name so that the public can get this dangerous man off the streets.
