Fish Fry Benefits Councilwoman With Cancer

October 30, 2010

The community came together Friday to financially help Century Councilwoman Nadine McCaw who is recovering from surgery to remove a cancerous kidney.

In just a few hours, over 300 catfish plates had been sold to benefit McCaw at a fish fry at the Century Roadside Park. McCaw underwent the surgery at Baptist Hospital last week. Her health insurance is exhausted, and the family needs help to pay for her treatment.

Other fundraisers are underway  for McCaw. Here is how you can help:

  • Large purple bows to show support are being sold for $6. The bows are available at the Century Town Hall, the Century Branch Library and at Southern Treasures (across from Whataburger on North Century Boulevard).
  • Donations can be made by PayPal to the address nadinemccaw@yahoo.com or at Pen Air Federal Credit Union on North Century Boulevard.

I agree with Papermaker. I thnk this would be a wonderful idea to name the park now while she is alive. She certainly would love it, and feel undeserving of it, but she has given a lot of her time and own money to make the park a pleasant place for all … those who live in Century and those passing through. Thoughts and prayers are with Nadine and her family.

If only the people of Century knew how much work Nadine has done for your community. From the first day I met her she preached about supporting the town, I felt guilty about what I had not done and I don’t even live in Century! Many times I saw her spend her own money and not having second thoughts about it. Everything was about the town and it’s residents and what could be done to benefit it. Please let her know how much she is appreciated. She is an amazing person and I have truly been blessed from the first day she walked into my life.

Wow! Went around 12:30 and all the plates were sold out. That is so good! I am about to go out front and hang my purple bow in support of Nadine. We love you Nadine and hope you get to feeling better soon…..

Naming the park after Nadine would definitely be a tribute to her for all of her work in the community. If the park were renamed, historical consideration should also be given to the original donors of the land for the park – the McDavid family – who owned that land. They also owned the home that Herb and MIldred Boutwell now live . Other family members of the McDavid family owned the home where the Century Welcome Center is and the other little house across the corner. In the early 1900s the intersection of North Century Blvd and Hecker Road was basically “McDavid Corner.” Another option would be to have an historical marker placed on the location giving the historical background of the park and telling all of the great work Nadine has contributed during the past decade.

I think we should name the park Nadine McCaw Park. Not Nadine McCaw Memorial Park. Let’s do it now, she deserves to know that we recognize what she has done for the beautification of that park as well as our town. Folks, this is a great woman, let’s recognize her hard work.

Our prayers are with you, Nadine and your family. Lean on God and He will sustain you through this bad time. Hope the fish fry is a big success. I’m sure there are many people who are ready to help. We have some great people here in the north end even though we hear more about the bad ones.

Thank you so much William for the story. Mom is in the fight for her life. The lymph nodes that they took out were all infected by the cancer. The cancer had spread to the soft tissue surrounding the kiney area and they removed it as well. It will be 5-6 weeks before they start her on any type of treatments so that she can build her strength back up to handle the treatments.

I have been posting detailed updates on her cancer site http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/nadinemccaw
We post daily on her progress or any new info that the Doctors give us on her condition. She is STILL in ICU and has a feeding tube. For more details, please visit her site. Love to you all for your support for my mom!
