School Board Issues Position Statements On Two Amendments

The Escambia County School Board has issued position statements on two statewide amendments that will appear on the November ballot.

Amendment 4

Amendment 4 would require a referendum for adoption and amendment of local government comprehensive land use plans.

“The School Board of Escambia County, Florida, recognizes the potential adverse consequences of proposed Amendment 4 and urges the citizens to carefully consider them before voting in the 2010 general election.”

Amendment 8

The class size amendment would remove current class size caps from Florida’s classrooms.

“The School Board of Escambia County, Florida, recognizing the need for smaller classes and the need for flexibility at the school level in providing the best education for students of this District, encourage citizens to support proposed Amendment 8 in the 2010 general election.”

First Chief Challenge 5K A Huge Success (With Photo Gallery And Results)

Over 140 runners and walkers took part in the first annual Chief Challenge 5K Saturday morning at Northview High School.

The overall fastest male was Sam Cowen from Pensacola Christian Academy and the fastest overall female runner was Robin Blackman from Jay High School. There were 142 racers ranging from kindergarten age and up that finished the course around the campus of Northview High School.

“The Wellness and Cross Country team sponsored the run and only anticipated about 50 runners. Our over all goal was to promote running/walking and family fitness through the Chief Challenge,” said Natalie Nall, Chief Challenge coordinator. “We were surprised by the community turnout and great weather. We would like to continue to keep the cost low, but plan to work out the many kinks for next year‘s Chief Challenge. We heard great feedback from many of the participants and plan to make next year’s race just as fun . Thanks to the many parents and sponsors of the race.”

Community Mourns The Loss Of Bruce E. Lowery

The North Escambia area is morning the loss of Bruce E. Lowery, 47, of Bratt, who passed away Saturday at a Pensacola hospital. He was employed with the City of Atmore as a building and code enforcement inspector.

Lowery was a 1987 graduate of Auburn University and a 1981 graduate of Ernest Ward High School where he was a member of the 1979 state championship football team. He was also a longtime member of the Northeast Pensacola youth baseball association.

Bruce Lowery is survived by his wife Julie Van Pelt Lowery; two sons Bradley Lowery and Michael Lowery; daughter Jessica Lowery; parents Charles A. and Reita Lowery; two sisters Sandra (Sammy) Day and Robin (Todd) Parker; and one brother Alan (Becky) Lowery.

Photo Gallery: Thousands Attend Jay Peanut Festival

The 21st Annual Jay Peanut Festival attracted thousands to Jay this weekend.

The Peanut Festival featured something fun for everyone including arts and crafts, antiques, inflatable rides, rock climbing wall, pony rides, hay rides, train rides and much more. The Gabbert’s 1930’s Farm Museum was also be open for tours. There was plenty of food too…kettle corn, BBQ, hamburgers, roasted corn, apple dumplings and more.

And, of course, peanuts were the star of the festival, and were will be plenty of green peanuts and boiled peanuts as well as fried, roasted and candied peanuts.

The event is dedicated to the memory of Melissa Caroline Gabbert, who died of cancer in 1990.

Boutwell Earn Doctorate

Jay High School graduate Brian Boutwell has earned his doctorate degree from Florida State University.

The 2003 Jay graduate earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology in August 2006, his master’s degree in criminology in December 2007 and his Ph.D in criminology in August 2010 from FSU.

He is an assistant professor at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, were he will teach a criminological theory this fall. His family — Billy, Wanda and Brett — currently reside in Jay.

Accomplished Pianist In Concert Tonight In Oak Grove

Oak Grove Baptist Church will host accomplished pianist Jackie Beck in concert this evening.

Beck served as pianist for Olive Baptist Church in Pensacola for several years. She has also played for several citywide revivals in Pensacola and countless church services in Florida, Alabama and Georgia.

Beck will be in concert at 6 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church on North Highway 99. The public is invited.

Arrested: Two In Motel Room As Deputy Shot

The two people in a Pensacola motel room when an Escambia County deputy was shot Wednesday were both arrested Saturday on drug charges.

Eric James Sherbutt, 30, and Stormie Zeandra Felger, 18, were both charged with drug possession, drug production and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Escambia County Jail records. He was released on $35,000 bond, while she remained in jail Saturday night with bond set at $35,000.

Sherbutt and Felger were in Room 121 of the Motel 6 on Pensacola Boulevard when Michael Scott Lee, 21, opened fire on Deputy Jason Ates, striking him in the upper thigh.  Lee was then shot and killed by Escambia County deputies.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said an active meth lab was discovered in the motel room after they responded to check on the welfare of Sherbutt.
