Man Airlifted After Being Bit By Rattlesnake

October 28, 2010

A male was airlifted to a Pensacola hospital Thurday afternoon after being bitten by a rattlesnake in North Escambia.

The man, about 30 years old, was bitten about 4:30 p.m. in the yard of a home in the 8000 block of Sunset View Lane in Molino, about a mile from the intersection of Highway 97 and Sunshine Hill Road. He was flown to the hospital by Lifeflight. His name and condition were not immediately available.

The snake was reportedly around a satellite dish at the home. At last report, the snake had not been captured.

The Molino Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Escambia County EMS responded to the call.

“Good grief , why would anyone want a child to take a chance on being bitten by a rattlesnake? You people need to get a life.”

Of all the comments on here, only THINKER would protect all rattlesnakes. Others would be careful about which snakes they killed because many other snakes do not hurt humans but DO KILL AND EAT rattlesnakes. Thus, killing those snakes makes rattlers more likely to bite the child.

And just in case you do not understand what is meant by two legged snakes, that is a way of speaking of humans with the minds of the worst kinds of snakes, with no conscience and more likely to kill humans than all snakes combined.

Even those should not be killed out of hand because the killer might be the real two legged snake, rather than the one he or she claimed was a two legged snake.

Kill the snake and save a innocent child that could walk up on it and not know that he/she shouldn’t pick it up or step on it. Toddlers playing outside have no idea about snakes. Good grief , why would anyone want a child to take a chance on being bitten by a rattlesnake? You people need to get a life.

I, too, have met the two legged kind. The two legged kind with blue eyes are the worst.

I’ve met a few of the two legged snakes but still advise you not kill them on sight.
Too many others will think ill of you.

    David for avoiding trouble,
not killing the harmless by accident
or being harmed the same way

We know there are snakes here. Given the chance they will leave you alone. Watch for them ALL THE TIME, not just when you are out in a field or the woods. The black snakes will kill and eat your rattlesnakes, etc. Not all dead snakes are good snakes! FYI: rabbits are not rodents. They are lagomorphs. Rats, squirrels, mice are rodents.

I”m one of those people that say a snake is a snake. Kill first and act last. There aren’t any good snakes as for I am concerned. Not all snakes crawl on their bellies some walk on 2 feet.

Hello all, hope the person recovers quickly from the bite. We live in the country, we have snakes, not all are bad, and they ALL do basically the same thing…..keep the rodent population down. Just in case it is not known, rattlesnakes do NOT have to be coiled to strike.

Thank goodness for people like you!

And to the rest of you, who want to kill kill kill all snakes, you are just showing how uninformed you are. You may think it looks ‘big and bad’ to make the remarks you’ve made. But actually, it makes you look stupid and uncaring about your children’s future.

Do some research – watch some documentaries on snakes. You could change your opinion.

Kill, kill those rattlesnakes. I had a 13-year old uncle bitten years ago before they had the drs. we have today and he never survived so all rattlesnakes should be killed, killed.

I do hope the man doesn’t lose a leg or something. When you work outdoors it’s important to be knowledgeable about weather conditions that encourage snakes to be on the move. Cool nights and warm days and adequate rainfall allow them to move from hunting grounds to safe hibernating areas.

Rattlesnake populations are controlled naturally by king snakes, blacksnakes, hawks, weasels, and other predators, but what do we do?…we destroy habitat for these natural controls.

My dogs once alerted me to a newborn diamondback right outside my back door. I put it out in my back woods. Earlier, one of our cats got bit by a rattlesnake of unknown species but the Vet doesn’t keep anti-venom in stock. It died despite a 17 mile rush to the Vet.

  15. Thinker on October 29th, 2010 10:20 am

In their efforts to kill a rattlesnake, some will be bitten….poetic justice.

I’ve helped diamondbacks cross highways. On two occasions, while trying to scare them out of the middle of the road, they only coiled tightly ready to strike. But I know them and their lack of interest in striking. I reached out with my loose pant-covered leg and placed a foot next to the tight coil while distracting them with a hand just out reach. Then I pushed it with my foot across onto the side of the road like it was a shuffle board piece.

My 3 yr old neice got bit by a diamond back rattler last week. it was about 8 inches long… though they say the small ones are more lethal. Needless to say they got her to icu so quick that after 4 viles of antivenom she was sent home the next day! If you can get them treatment fast things should be ok. I hope this man will be alright!

    THINKER
Well said….it still amazes me that these ppl here would kill anything before
they even know the consequences but then it looks more and more to me
like they never ever consider the consequences of their actions….

  18. Thinker on October 29th, 2010 9:18 am

Check the statistics on snake bite. Based on that, instead of killing snakes we should do away with our cars, and an infinite number of other things first. Rattlesnakes are slow to bite humans unless stepped on. Just watch where you walk. They really do a great job of controlling rabbits and other rodents. All snakes are good. There is no more efficient rat and rodent killer than a rat snake, gopher snake, etc. They go easily into their burrows and wipe out an entire litter. Don’t be stupid, people. Or better yet, go ahead and be stupid. The planet won’t miss us when we destroy all life including ourselves. Bottom line is that snakes cause very few deaths in this country.

    ours prayers are with him.

…to keep snakes from coming in your home you could put a little sulfur around the outside base of house. it really does work. we also do this around camp when we go camping in/mear the woods.
