Driver Charged After Head-on Molino Wreck (Updated Details, Names)

October 23, 2010

A 19-year old Pensacola woman was charged after a head-on collision Friday night in Molino.

The accident happened about 6:20 at the intersection of Highway 29 and Highway 97.

The Florida Highway patrol said Amy Irby, 19, of Pensacola was traveling north on Highway 29  in a 2009 Ford Focus when she attempted a left turn and traveled into the path of a 2003 Kia SUV driven by Theresa Williams, 32, of Pensacola. The vehicles collided head-on in the intersection.

Williams was seriously injured and transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola by LifeFlight. Her passenger, Antwon Smith, 27, of Pensacola was not seriously injured. Irby and her passenger, Muneca Rodriguez, 15, of Pensacola, received minor injuries and were transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola by ambulance.

Irby was charged with violation of right of way by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Molino, Cantonment and McDavid stations of Escambia Fire Rescue responded to the crash, along with the FHP, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and Escambia County EMS.

I live in the hwy 29-97 area and there is no reason wreaks can not be avoided.Driving means keeping your mind on driving and your head on your shoulders not up your — – - -

@CD- I grew up in the area and still live here and the ‘police’ cars have dropped drastically this year. However, there are FHP cars in the area. I see them far more than ECSO cars. This being said, this intersection is not bad or the cause of these wrecks. ou can see from all directions…..if only people would look, stop @ the stop sign(s) and do the speed limit which is 55 BEFORE you ever get there.
@ps – Ditto! you are correct and it is just not your observation. You used see 3-4 at Mrs. Fran’s and you do not see that anymore. Where have they gone is what I would like to know….BUT, there are 2 every now and again at the McDavid Mini Mart. One of them owns the store. Mainly the 2 Suburbans in the area…see more in Century this past month than I ever have. Maybe that is where they have gone.

  3. ps on October 25th, 2010 1:34 pm

no i have not seen any police in this area unless stopped at tom thumb for a minute. there are more state troopers out here…. if you are seeing police in molino i would like to know where… even since the last wreck i am not seeing any local police. i am an honest person-do not lie-this is my observation only…

  4. CD on October 25th, 2010 9:31 am

There are always police in Molino. You can’t sit here and tell me there aren’t. You have to be a little more observant. That road was just widened by putting the turning lanes in. If you live on the main drag then you should expect to turn around in your driveway. 95A is AN Alternate Highway people. Highways are made for people to go a little faster, and I’m not talking about speeding. That intersection is fine. How many wrecks have been at that intersection in that last few years compared to 9 1/2 mile & 29 or other places??? Why would you just want to keep adding redlights to highway 29 where the speed is 55 or 65. So we can pay for them to be put up. No one was hurt too bad, and it was an accident just like the story says. Accidents happen we are only human.

Im familiar with the intersection and the surrounding area….Its real simple not to get in a wreck, but one lapse in judgement, it becomes very easy.

Keep your eyes on the road and your mind clear….you are not likely to get in a wreck.

Lived here all my life , you dont need a light you just need to slow down and pay attention, there is more traffic with the casino and such but a light will get more killed, you would have to redo the entire intersection so people could get onto Crabtree Church Rd. No amount of lights will stop humans from making mistakes.

  7. NURSE FOR MANY YRS. on October 24th, 2010 8:51 am

THEY DONT CALL THE HELICOPTER UNLESS IT IS VERY SERIOUS AND THEY CAN GET THE PATIENT TO THE HOSPITAL QUICKER THAN AMBULANCE, I HAVE NEVER SEEN LIFEFLIGHT TO A SCEEN THAT WAS NOT SERIOUS AND I HAVE BEEN A NURSE FOR 18YRS. THANK GOD FOR OUR EMERGENCY TEAM, YOU GUYS GO THROUGH IT ALL !! THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS FOR ALL INVOLVED !

I live on 95a in Molino and I agree with some of the other comments about how bad traffic is on this road. We also have to turn around in our yard in order to go out, because of the traffic. Between the log trucks, cement trucks, and dump trucks as well as regular traffic, everyone is speeding. My aunt was killed in front of her house at the head of her driveway (she was a pedestrian) by someone speeding and not paying attention, but our FHP made their report to look like she walked in front of the car. The girl was not charged for killing my aunt, she didn’t even get a traffic ticket. Now anyone that lives in the Molino area anywhere along 95A knows not to walk in the road, but the report said that my aunt’s death was her fault. Go Figure. They do need to do something about these roads to make them safer especially at night. There are some areas of 95A that are pitch black at night. I suggest putting reflectors on the road and to remark the road to make it more visible.
    Just needed to vent.

i live in Molino and travel from here to pcola several times a week, i pass thru Molino at 11pm at night headed home. In the 3 years i have lived here, i have only seen 2 police cars in the area looking for speeders. On my way home people are passing me and i am going 65, they are way above that…. and often i think to myself
“wish the police would be around to see all this speeding”. but no, they are not around Molino-they are in Cantonment… there are plenty there by Muskogee Rd looking for speeders. Not only do people go way above the speed limit thru Molino, they are all over the road because they are either intoxicated or on their cell phones. I wish someone could tell us why there are no police in Molino that actually sit and watch for speeders-
    Really sad

Just because Life Flight was there doesn’t mean that it was bad. They use it instead of an ambulance these days.

  11. someone who cares on October 23rd, 2010 11:03 pm

Come on people pay attention…this is a serious intersection…..n I have a daughter n a grandbaby that travel that route all the time….PAY ATTENTION N DRIVE!!!!! Safely!!!

  12. Walnut Hill Roy on October 23rd, 2010 10:02 pm

Why does everyone automatically yell for stoplights to control the intersection, they will do nothing but move the accidents further up the road. Can you just imagine a line of cars all turning onto 97 at the same time with someone up in front doing 45 mph? The tailgating and head on accidents caused by improper passing would be attrocious.

I see nothing wrong with the intersection the way that it is; at the very worst I could see more LEOs giving out tickets for driving while distracted. These accidents all have one thing in common, people not paying attention to what they are doing.

JW ,if there were more donuts and coffee at the Tom thumb there ECSO would hang out there more! Maybe Tom Thumb could offer them a deal?

  14. Light Needed on October 23rd, 2010 9:21 pm

Agree. Needs a traffic light at 97 and 28 in Molino. Scary intersection.

  15. barrineau on October 23rd, 2010 5:25 pm

I hope Kevin White or the powers that be are reading this , they have the power to make this one the last one.

  16. mary on October 23rd, 2010 3:14 pm

I agree w/ “JW” ..Escambia’s Finest should hang out on both sides of Hwy 29 @ that intersection!

  17. molino jim on October 23rd, 2010 2:32 pm

I don’t know about if it was speed or what ever that caused this wreck. I have seen north bound traffic on 29 that tried to cut north onto 97 as if they were in a race or in a fighter. The south bound traffic is some times closer that it looks and they will not slow down. Their attitude appears to be —I’ll show them by running into them. I talked with a FHP officer one day when they were “wolf packing” at 29 and Molino Rd. He said they were writing ticket for as fast as 85-90 as hard as they could write. Another problem in the area is that the timber and dirt trucks use the old highway north bound and speed all of the time. Hope all five are healing—they will never get over the injuries—I know from.

  18. EMD on October 23rd, 2010 1:28 pm

This intersection is FAR too wide and highly traveled, not to have regular traffic lights. What needs to be done to get one there?

  19. PRAYING FOR ALL INVOLVED on October 23rd, 2010 12:00 pm

MY HUSBAND I WERE TRAVELING WHEN RE ROUTED AND SEEN THE AMBULANCE AND LIFE FLIGHT, IT LOOKED VERY BAD, I HOPE AND PRAY ALL WERE OK. PLEASE KEEP US POSTED ON THIS.

  20. Horrific! on October 23rd, 2010 11:19 am

I still say it is stupid to tie up our police force with radar….when they have theft, larceny, burglary, home invasions, stabbings, shootings, rapes, knifings, and MURDERS TO SOLVE. CAMERAS PLEASE!!!!!!

For all of you who scream about robbery and looting and all the other crime, be sure YOUR not part of the speeding problem that takes the officers off of the real crime in this area.

AND be a good citizen, report, report, report, report, some of the stuff that goes on here could be cleaned up if you all would report what you know…..crime isn’t a joke just because your cuz got away with something.

  21. Dave on October 23rd, 2010 11:10 am

They need a full function traffic signal there.I know people run red traffic signals and people get rear ended while stopped at traffic signals BUT that is a very wide road at that intersection. The line of sight is difficult buy the number of lanes and the angel of the northbound turn lane to 97.

  22. Horrific! on October 23rd, 2010 11:09 am

    instigator is right

They have not even began to slow them down on ANY of these roads yet…..
Morning traffic, rush hour, middle of the night……geeesh
when will it END and when will they LEARN…….

  23. curious on October 23rd, 2010 10:53 am

I just read the whole article again and it doesnt mention speed anywhere. Why does everyone always assume speed was a factor in a crash. I live in molino also and know that people do fly down some of the roads and Im not defending them but sometimes accidents are exactly what their named, ACCIDENTS! I think there some good points on here but this article is about an accident and thats it so far. Lets spend the time here finding out who the people are and if they are ok. If come to find out that speed is the culprit here at a later time then fire away at it but these people deserve the right to not have people assuming what caused their accident.

  24. FYI on October 23rd, 2010 10:21 am

Law breakers will still run red lights, have you ever heard the saying ” Locks are for honest people” ? And as far as these traffic cams why dont we just open up our homes and let them put cameras there also. We are a country of blamers you know, Passing the buck. Everyone makes mistakes and at some point in your life we have all gotten careless, or we still are careless. Every one makes mistakes some of us care and some don’t. I have a hard time getting out of my driveway maybe I can get a light hung there. I would bet that everyone on here at some point in your life has either ran a stop sign or a red light and possibly not on purpose. And as far as lights slowing people down, only black and tans will do that. Now for spy cameras, they are coming be carefull what you ask for. I believe there is a place where you can donate to the invasion of privacy fund just call you local gov. they will gladly take your money . How many of you on here have ever recieved a traffic citation.

  25. concerned on October 23rd, 2010 8:46 am

Need a traffic control light at this intersection. I travel 97 and it is terrifying trying to cross 29 at this intersection.

  26. instigator on October 23rd, 2010 8:03 am

i live on molino road. logging trucks use it as a shortcut to 99. the traffic and speed is horrible. you have to turn around on your front lawns to go head first out of your driveway to not get clipped by a speeding car. my dog was run down by a speeding car 2 years ago thurs. the driver didnt even stop to say sorry. i know who it was. people dont care my child was trying to catch the dog as he ran in the street. she could have been run down too had she not snagged on the fence

  27. JW on October 23rd, 2010 8:01 am

55 mph through there ya’ll, slow down!!! ECSO needs to hang out at the Tom Thumb there a little bit more

  29. concerned on October 23rd, 2010 12:28 am

people need to slowwwww down–we live off 29-they fly down 29 like its a speedway-no room for any error-please please folks slow down – is it worth to get killed or know someone who gets killed or badly hurt -why the rush-to get somewhere a minute sooner??? no one seems to be concerned about anyone else on the road. please….

  30. hey on October 22nd, 2010 9:21 pm

    Who were the people?

  31. EMD on October 22nd, 2010 8:54 pm

With more and more people moving into this area, there NEEDS to be regular traffic lights at Hwy. 29 and Hwy 97, Hwy 29 and Hwy 182 (Molino Rd.), and Hwy. 29 and Hwy 196 (Barrineau Park Road). I hope they will not wait until more are maimed and killed. They have the money for video spy cameras.

  32. Southern Boy on October 22nd, 2010 8:38 pm

It looks like they would put up red lights there and also Molino Road as many wrecks as they have. I don’t know what happened tonight, at least with red lights it would slow everyone down some because the speed limit signs don’t seem to. Hope everyone will be ok in this crash tonigh.t
