Computers Missing From Old Carver Middle School; Last Seen With Pastor

October 11, 2010

According to Escambia County School District records, two computers worth nearly $2,000 are missing from the Old Carver Middle School in Century.

The computers were in the possession of Pastor Irvin Stallworth of New Life Baptist Church, the old school’s former tenant, according to Charles M. Peterson, director of maintenance services for the school district.

“I made several attempts to contact Pastor Stallworth since being notified of the missing computers,” Peterson wrote in a school district memo to be presented this month to the school board. Stallworth returned Peterson’s call in late September and said that someone from the district picked up the computers, according to the memo.

According to school district documents, a report of the missing items will be presented to local law enforcement agencies as is standard procedure.

Peterson said no one from the district picked up or removed the computers. “The location of these computers is unknown,” Peterson said. The computers were valued at $1,898.48.

The computers were last inventoried by the district in the school in May, 2009, but were reported missing at the time of the 2010 inventory.

@ this point they need to write it off and move on. There is too much negativity being created for both sides. The Dist. making it look like the Church ripped them off and making it look as though it’s big guy jumping on the little guy. Move on and write it off.

“i will vote but until then im not voting for no one,” enough said if you wont vote at the polls then you have no right to voice an opinion. The Constitution gives you a right to speak out with a vote. Well your voice is silenced when you don’t use it and that ends your right to complain. I may not like who run in a campaign, but I pick the lessor of the two evils and I make my mark. After that I speak out and I speak out loudly cause I now have my right to do so!

  4. Bigger Questions on October 13th, 2010 12:52 pm

So my understanding is the school board rented the school to the church for $1 per year….THEN raised the rent to ..wait for it….$12,000.00 per MONTH. And then there was a problem with an electric bill. NOW the school board has decided some computers are missing several months after the church moves out? I could go into why the computers (obviously not worth $2,000.00) were STILL in the church when the church originally rented the school. AND why they waited so long to find them. AND question the records being kept by the school board. And why they are so concerned with a couple hundred dollars worth of computersrather than educating children and providing a safe place for them to learn and so on. But above all I can’t help but wonder why the school board is picking on a not-for-profit small church in question. What’s in it for the school board?

    REGARDING:
“People who have a beef against “the church” will be quick to point the finger and be the first one in line to condemn somebody who is a churchgoer.”

Quite often it is just a beef with a particular church or even particular members of a particular church, as opposed to those who would defend every member of every church because they mistakenly think they are all part of THE CHURCH, when in fact they may or may not even be Christians.

And this is me not faulting Mr. Stallworth because i imagine it is more likely simply poor record keeping elsewhere making for this fuss. The original deal was a poor one but that was on Jim Paul and he may not have even been sober when he made it. (He may have, which would be worse?)

    David for better accounting
    better stewardship

I think it would be interesting to see a list of ALL tenants occupying Esc Cty School district property and see What Are They Each Paying for Rent? Also, what are All Non- Profits paying that occupy ECSD property? $12,000+ per Month Anyone other than New Life Baptist Church… Doubtful.

  7. REALLY? on October 12th, 2010 4:34 pm

People who have a beef against “the church” will be quick to point the finger and be the first one in line to condemn somebody who is a churchgoer. People who are Christians and attend church are human just like non churchgoers They stumble and fall just like everyone else, they just happen to believe that Jesus loves them and forgives them just as they are. This pastor who is being accused is most likely innocent and just being thrown under the bus by people who need another excuse not to get right with God and attend church. Mr. Pro it doesn’t seem like a slow drive to me, it’s more like the fast track! Wonder why?

Mr. Stallworth moved into the old Century HS building with a contract with the former school superintendent Jim Paul for $1/yr. He did not work with three principals at Carver Century, but only two. One for a period of only a year. The district was aware of equipment on inventory in that building. For reasons of politics and others the situation was left alone. Upon taking office in 2008 Superintendent Thomas has corrected many situations involving this former “sweet deal.” Property in Mr. Stallworth’s possession is his responsibility. The replacement value of two computers that are six years old is certainly not that high but were used by him or his church during that period. Some price must be assessed for this hardware. A bigger question is what about the $90K church power bill from the building. Is it being paid on installments as promised?

  9. ProudArmyParent on October 12th, 2010 1:23 pm

“PLEASE!!……….imitating DHG?,” it really amazes me when you use your brain to explain a situation you get comments like this. Hmmm someone needs to think. Missing school district property is everyones concern. This stuff costs us the tax payer. Why sweep it under the rug?

  10. Truth on October 12th, 2010 12:51 pm

Carver Century K-8 has had three principals and if the church has been there for 5-6 years than computers was left in a building with periods of break ins. During Mayor Hamilton 1st year term is when the church entered the school building. For that length of time along with the administration of Dr Busley and Mr. Nick the computers was used by Carver Middle. These computers are left behind because they were of great value and after a period of 4 months the grass is cut in 2010. Taxpayers money at work. This means that the computer are about 7-8 years old. The value is in the age. Do the math.

  11. Horrific! on October 12th, 2010 7:49 am

Well I’m a tax payer too
and those computers ARE MINE as well as everyone elses in this town
and if you all want to forgive and forget your crap fine, but I personnally
am fed up with thieft in this town and IF this pastor took computers that
belong to me than I want them back.

It doesn’t matter what he did last year by the way, that doesn’t give him
    license to steal this year……..

I was taught if you take something that does not belong to you, that’s stealing — no matter how old it is, how little it’s worth, or who you are. I hope the computers are just misplaced for it seems even worse if a ‘pastor’ took them.

Hasn’t there already been something about him and underhanded goings on? Or am I mistaken – if so, beg your pardon.

  14. Women Of GOD on October 11th, 2010 7:58 pm

I feel the school should take it as a lost. When you rent or lease a building you always do inventory with the renter or leaser. They should of never accepted the keys back if something was missing. And to wait that many months to accuse the Pastor you have to be kidding. Come on guys its likely the computers was taking since the keys was handed back over.

  15. ProudArmyParent on October 11th, 2010 6:12 pm

“‘I made several attempts to contact Pastor Stallworth since being notified of the missing computers,’Peterson wrote.” Hmmm read the story, a member for the Escambia County School District did try to contact Rev. Stallworth to no avail. Next the building still belongs to the Escambia County School District if they wish to store their own property in the building they own, they have the perfect legal right. Then as far as the computers being missing goes, the were caught in an inventory that is done but once a year, thus the four month discrepency. As far as the light and gas bill goes, Rev. Stallworth was aware his church was getting that bill paid and as a “man of God” he should have stepped fowarded and corrected the situation. Finally, missing school property is a public item. It comes under our right to know. I would a agree that first Rev. Stallworth should have been notified first, well my beginning quote says it all. Thus public record is now notifing through the northescambia news. Rev Stallworth you are now notified!!!!!!!

Just thinking smartly with the brain my God gave me.

  16. Julie Booth-Moran on October 11th, 2010 5:03 pm

in my opinion, Northescambia or Any News media is not the appropriate venue for this situation. This should have been handled between the Lessor and Leasee. Why didn’t the school district just send a letter if something was missing? Better yet… I have a couple of rental houses and when I have rented or leased the property, I went over WITH the tenant ALL inventory in the house that belongs to the property and then when they moved…I inspected the property to insure that everything was satisfactory and in place. So in this situation, If there was a discrepancy it would have been resolved at the time of exiting the property and accepting the keys….NOT Over 4 MONTHS Later!

The Esc County school district raised the rent on a surplused building from $1.00 a Year to over $12,000 per Month. You never separated the electric meter so the power bill in its entirety was owed by the church when the gymnasium was not used by NLBC and yet it was heated and cooled every day on the meter & the football field lights as well.. that later became to be the bill that the church owed. COME ON….pick on somebody else…. Better yet, why not quick picking on anyone and start worrying about improving the state of education in Esc. County…Hmmm, Isn’t that a little bit more important. This is RIDICULOUS!!

  17. Jim on October 11th, 2010 3:20 pm

Corporations, School dist.’s, loose equipment all the time. If they have been missing that long they are to old for use by the school anyway. It sounds to me like somebody did not keep up with the paperwork for inventory purposes. It once again comes down to running the organization ineffeciently. Then to add insult trying to point the finger at someone who is trying to do something positive within the community.
If I ran my business like the Gov’t and schools I would have been out of business in short order. Just my six bits worth.

  18. North Escambia County Taxpayer on October 11th, 2010 3:07 pm

The Escambia County School board throws away a considerable amount more than this on a MONTHLY Basis when they pay themselves and the school superintendent.

Why would computers be left in a facility that has been leased out for YEARS and was empty before the church leased it?? You would think someone would have done a walk-thru before they accepted the keys back…standard operating procedure…when a tenant moves the Lessor checks the facility, DUH!!!!

  19. barrineau on October 11th, 2010 2:18 pm

I agree with no one special , there are rules and laws regarding this type of stuff. We can’t pick and choose the ones we want to follow or not.(although many try to do just that)

  20. What?? on October 11th, 2010 1:22 pm

I’m assuming these computers are now considered “old” meaning if they’re over a year old they are considered “old” and if so I highly doubt they are worth any where near $1,898.48. And yes, if the school was that concerned about them they should have been keeping track of them long before now. I agree, with as much theft as there is now-a-days, it’s definitely not right to now be blaming the preacher and/or the church. Besides, in my mind, if the school left the computers in the possession of the church fo that many years, it appears to me they would now belong to the church. And shame on them for charging the church $12,000.00 a month to lease the space if they were indeed doing the good for the community that is reported here.

  21. Name (required) on October 11th, 2010 11:15 am

    Why the line,

“The computers were in the possession of Pastor Irvin Stallworth of New Life Baptist Church, the old school’s former tenant”?

Were the computers in his possession, or were they simply on some inventory, last listed at the location? Did he sign for them? Were there reports he had them in his possession?

Why would the school leave these computers in the building they were leasing out?

I think some of these questions might better serve the readers.

  22. no one special on October 11th, 2010 9:48 am

It makes no difference whether or not the county cares what is in the buildings. The fact is, the property inside the building does belong to the county and not to whomever rents the property. It would be the same as if you rented a furnished house and just because you have been using the furniture while you were there you cannot take it with you when you move. You are also responsible for taking care of the contents during the time you rent it.

  23. Century girl on October 11th, 2010 9:43 am

It’s amazing to me that NLBC had occupied that facility for over 5 years and the shcool district is just now looking for 2 computers!

  24. Elizabeth on October 11th, 2010 8:51 am

If they wanted the stuff in the school building…any of it…why wasn’t it locked up or transferred to a storage facility? Whatever property is up there: computer, chairs, tables, etc. it’s only normal for stuff to get mixed up if more than one entities is using it. If a computer has been sitting up there since who-knows-when, why does it matter now? They haven’t cared anything about it for years.

It’s really just kind of absurd on the school board’s part … but I guess it’s just par for the course.

  25. New Life Church member on October 11th, 2010 8:50 am

Taxpayer is right. Look at your tax dollars sitting there. Children are being bussed many miles to portable buildings while a perfectly good school SITS there housing only a few headstart children. The school is still having to be maintained so it is STILL costing the taxpayers $$.

As for the church, since the rent was raised to over $12,000 A MONTH…and the church was forced to move…wouldnt one think that someone from the school district or board would have walked thru the facility with the Pastor before the keys were accepted. Now 4 months later, the school district wants to say something is missing. We had several break-ins while we were there…anything can happen.

  26. North Escambia County Taxpayer on October 11th, 2010 8:36 am

It is puzzling to me to worry about two computers, when there is OVER $1,000,000 worth of school buildings paid for by the taxpayers…sitting there rottening down! Where is the priority of the school district and the oversight of taxpayer money?

  27. New Life Church member on October 11th, 2010 8:31 am

Yes! New Life Baptist Church meets at the Carver Community Center on Jefferson Ave every Wed night at 6:30pm and Sunday at 9:30am (Sunday School)
    11:00AM for Church service.

Thank you “FLORIDA”…NLBC has fed, clothed, and helped many in the town. This is what we are supposed to do and it is what we do!

  28. Century Man on October 11th, 2010 7:47 am

Does this church still exist since they are out of the school building? If so, where do they meet?

  29. FLORIDA!!!!!!! on October 11th, 2010 7:44 am

I think this is crazy. If he did take the computers so what… yea its wrong but it did not have to be publicized this is personal matter and it should have been handled personally. There should have not been such headline until all the facts were out. Its funny that they did not have his name plastered on the media when his church GIVING food bags out to needed people. Its sad that the only news that draws attention is BAD NEWS

  30. Resident on October 11th, 2010 7:42 am

    >>>The media always use a topic to draw attention. to it’s reader. In todays world with Christianty on the top of the hit list, a Preacher of God always draw attention

You must not read northescambia very much. While being a “balanced” news source, it’s the only one I know of that will run Christian items and even let a preacher quote the Bible.

As for “Preacher of God”, not all preachers are of God. Nuff said.

  31. New Life Church member on October 11th, 2010 7:37 am

This is ludicrous! Number 1… The church has been moved four months! Also, a walkthru should have been done when the church was ready to turn over the keys.
Finally, a letter should have been sent to the church with a list of items in question.
To attack a church and it’s minister through the media without sending written correspondence is totally unprofessional. Why, after the building has been vacated for over 4 months would this just be coming out thru the media and no written request or notice sent to the church?

  32. Mr. Pro. on October 11th, 2010 7:34 am

Let us not be to quick to Judge. The media always use a topic to draw attention. to it’s reader. In todays world with Christianty on the top of the hit list, a Preacher of God always draw attention. If it’s not the President or a proment star, the (Man of God), Preacher or Priest is next. Our Nation seems to be on a slow drive to Hell. No Prayer, Don’t talk about Jesus, New World Order, nothing GOOD happens in our Country, People don’t Love and Help anymore. Don’t fall for the HIPE!!!!

  33. David Huie Green on October 11th, 2010 7:34 am

could easily have been lost in the confusion. Unguarded access likely many times. Part of the silliness of renting out parts of a building without isolating those parts.

Or so it seems to me.

  34. Angi on October 11th, 2010 7:10 am

I personally thought that they had closed this school down, If so, why is there still stuff there in the buildings? Are they trying to open up something new there or what? Everything should have been cleared out of there once they chose to close the school down, and all belongings to the school should have been picked up by the schools district. I see cars at this school all of the time, what’s going on there??? Hopefully these computers will turn up.

  35. Horrific! on October 11th, 2010 7:08 am

I hope this is just a misunderstanding, however, if their going to contact law
enforcement I presume they sure don’t think so.

I hate to see someone who presents themselves as a pastor who preaches
to others about what they should do and how they should live and then
we find out THEY are they are only false prophets.
