Thieves Hit The Century Library, Even Digging Up Rose Bushes

September 29, 2010

Thieves have hit the Century Branch Library taking outdoor items — even digging up rose bushes.

When library workers arrived Tuesday, they found several items missing from outside the library on North Century Boulevard. An outdoor rug, a four-foot concrete bench with ceramic tile inlay, two flower pots and a boy and girl figurine were reported missing.  The thieves also dug up and removed two rose bushes that were planted next to the library. The items were valued at several hundred dollars.

The missing items had all been donated to the library by volunteers and employees, according to the library.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.  Once arrested, the person or persons responsible for the crime will be facing grand theft charges.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to contact the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office at (850) 436-9620.

No need to be defensive, Worried Resident. You were right.

We’d all be better off without vandals destroying things for the pleasure of destruction. they make everybody suffer or make do with less.

You are probably too young to remember but there used to be roadside parks all over the place with tables, benches and shelters. Then the vandals practiced their destructive powers and put an end to most of them.

David for lots of cameras in public places

    lol trackdad

you might be more right than you realize.

there was a case years ago, I don’t know if you all read it up here but
someone stole I believe it was a large yard ornament that was a lamb.

They took it and a year went by and they returned it with a note about
all the places it visited on it’s vacation.

I doubt the ppl who lost it thought it was funny, but since it got returned
I actually got a kick out of it. The note left was printed in the papers and
    it was hilarious.

I guess since you can check out books for free…..

maybe they just checked out the bench and will return it in two weeks.

I can’t stand a thief or a liar. it ticks me off when people steal just becasue they think they have right to. You are to pathetic to mention.

May you have no peace with what you stolen. But I’ll guess you are madder then heck when someone does it to you, I bet you’re the first one to jump up and complain, Right?

What goes around comes around. Karma mate, will bite you EVER time. : )

Kevin – you said who would want a concrete bench??? Evidently someone did, it was nice and would certainly look good in my yard. And no I did not steal it.

Worried Resident – Yes Flomaton has a nice new building but the Century library is nice also. Have you been in to see it? If not you might like what you find.

Big Al – There is a large sign for the library on Century Blvd. (aka Hwy 29). In fact I think there are three altogether. But then again, I understand because I am not always as observant as I should be.

It is a shame that when someone tries to make our town attractive some uncaring individual comes along and makes us wonder if it is worth it. I hope whoever did this feels guilty every time they sit on that bench. Hopefully at some point in their life they will regret it, it is almost like someone stealing from a church.

so whats the going rate for dirty old doormats these days? sounds like some kids and the stolen items can probably be found close to the crime scene! who wants to tote off a concrete bench anyway?

This is why there is nothing nice in Century. My cousin and I were talking a few days ago about how nice Flomaton library looks. She asked why ours couldn’t be any nicer. I said “I’m suprised it hasn’t already been robbed, or damaged in some sort of way”. -..It’s sad to say, but I’m not suprised at what has happened!

This place is right beside the road and no one seen anything? Come on now people.I feel bad for the staff there. They put a lot of work into the place to make it look nice, and for some idiots to come in there and destroy it is about as low as it gets.I am sure Century citizens and businesses will pull together and help fix it up again. It always looks so nice when i drive by there.

Well I guess someone elses yard needed an up grade at the expense of the town of Century.. and isn’t there something in the works for a sports complex or something for this town….HMMMMM…

  14. trackDad on September 29th, 2010 6:49 am

At least we don’t have to worry about anyone from Century stealing books from the library….
