Teen Gets 50 Years In Prison For Murder Of Century Native

September 9, 2010

A Bay Minette teen has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for the shooting death of a Century native last year.

mcarthurellis.jpgEllis Jarel McArthur, now 19, of Bay Minette, Ala., will serve a minimum of 25 years of the 50 year sentence in state prison under the sentenced handed down Wednesday by Judge Nickolas Geeker.

McArthur shot Jeffrey Kimbrough, 41, of Pensacola in the right eye on June 14, 2009, in the 1500 block of Gulf Beach Highway in the Warrington community in the southwest part of the county. The incident occurred at the Heritage Oaks Mobile Home Park, which had been without water for about a week due to a bill that the park owner did not pay to the Peoples Water Service.

Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies said Kimbrough confronted McArthur about a stolen wallet. That is when, according to deputies, McArthur pulled out a handgun and shot Kimbrough in the right eye. Kimbrough died a short time later at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola.

The shooting incident occurred not far from where members of Pensacola’s First Assembly of God Church were holding services, grilling hot dogs and giving away water to the trailer park residents. Several members of the church witnessed the shooting.

Kimbrough was born in Century and attended Century Elementary and Carver Middle school. During the time he lived in Century, Kimbrough was a member of Century Volunteer Fire Department where he obtained the rank of captain. After moving from Century, he served as a volunteer for the Pensacola Fire Department. He was employed the last five years at the Pensacola Civic Center.

He was survived by his wife of 24 years Clara Ann Nettle; children Bridgett, Leroca, Elandarge and Tamara; mother Carrie Kimbrough; four brothers and three sisters. His funeral was held at New Life Baptist Church in Century, and internment was in the Century Cemetery.

I will start with I don’t believe in god. I knew Jeff and he was the kindest guy I worked with. I think this guy should have to stay in jail for the rest of his life, at least. He took away a great man and loving father. He shouldn’t have the option to get out and have his own family or even worse take another life. He obviously doesn’t think before he does things. So he should never be able to get out of jail. EVER!!!

Saying god will punish him doesn’t work for me. Because what if there is no god and he just gets away with 25 years probably will be let out sooner since our justice system is so screwed up. He shouldn’t have a chance at a life at all. Just my opinion. I miss you Jeff.

    regarding:
“WE LEAVE IT TO GOD TO DO THE JUDGING”

You realize we don’t, don’t you? If we did, we would not allow people to be arrested for murder or any other crime, because that would be JUDGEMENTAL. We would not allow them to be brought before a judge–because he isn‘t God. We would certainly not allow a jury of ordinary people to JUDGE if they were guilty of a crime–because they are all sinners too. We would not allow legislators to make laws which included punishment for crime because that would require some form of judgment.

Yes, ultimately we believe it is up to God to decide whether or not they burn for eternity for their sins, but in the here and now, we decide whether or not to stop them from committing more crimes against other people and whether or not to punish them for past ones.

And yes, it is a wasted life. This person wasted the life of the person he murdered and he wasted his own life by committing a crime so wicked even we decided to lock him away from most of humanity and whatever good he might have done with his life had he not decided to murder others instead.

Please try to not be so judgmental about those who are judgmental. Even if you decide to withhold judgment against someone who murders good people, there is no reason to refuse to withhold judgment against those who think such murders are bad.

David for a world without loose murderers

HOW ABOUT WE JUST PRAY FOR THESE PEOPLE AND NOT JUDGE! NO ONE IS A WASTE OF LIFE! NOT ONE HUMAN, BIRD, OR HORSE! EVEN THOUGH HE DONE WRONG WE LEAVE IT TO GOD TO DO THE JUDGING! HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOULS!

You Who- I totally agree!!! This world would be a much better place if it was an eye for an eye! He will be out on the streets again, more than likely in 25 years. He KILLED a man, a great man, and got such a lite sentence!!! Chances are he will repeat the crime. So, I guess we just wait until he gets out, kills again, then put him back in jail. It sickens me that we waste money on putting people like that in jail and not just get rid of them the same way they chose to get rid of an innocent person.

it took the justice system way to long to reach what i think was way to leaneite of a sentence. there not a day go by that jeffery name doesnt come up 25 years just dosent seem like enough time for the crime. god bless the kimbrough family

What a wonderful example of Christianity by Mrs. Kimbrough. She and her family have suffered a great loss, but still has the grace to pray for the family of the man that killed her husband. There are no winners in this situation. I pray for both families during this time of sorrow

Shouldn’t waste taxpayer’s money on him. Take him out back of the jail and do to him as he done to Kimbrough. EYE FOR AN EYE When we as a society start dealing with criminals like this it will be a lot safer for all of us. No more fear about waking down the street or out of a store. Woundn’t it be nice, like the old days. Just a thought!!!
