Radio Station Personality Gets 10 Years In Child Sex Abuse Case

September 30, 2010

A former local radio personality has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually abusing a child under 12.

Walter John Bowen, 68, received the sentence after pleading guilty Wednesday morning in Baldwin County Circuit Court. Bowen was sentenced under a plea bargain in which prosecutors dropped another charge involving the sexual abuse of another child under 12-years old.

Bowen, who was owner of WNSI AM in Robertsdale and WNSI FM in Atmore, had remained in jail since his arrest during the radio station’s morning show last December. He was known to listeners on the station’s morning show as “Walter Jay”.

He will be required to register as a sex offender once released from prison.

He’ll probably be transferred to someplace like Lake Butler and receive mental evaluations, etc. Of the 12 year sentance, if he has “good behavior” he’ll maybe serve 7 years. Then be released. They won’t place him in the general population because of the disturbances among the other inmates considering the charges…It’s not exactly like the movies.

We can only hope the children (and there was probably more than one child) he abused can gain their sense of self again and move forward toward a better life. Know this was NOT your (the children’s) fault. You can experience the good in life and the deserved happiness life can offer…my prayers for healing are with these children and their families. I hope these children have a good and positve support system. It will remain with them forever. However, it does not have to control their life. They can emerge stronger and better. It takes time and work – but they can be happy children, maturing into happy adults.

    To Robert & Angi:
My exact feelings, but we both know we would fair worse than this guy will. He can “repent” kick back and relax for a while. Our tax money will even furnish special protection to keep “Bubba” off his back…?
I seriously considered such a response (lead poisoning) for a sisters victimization by a family member! Better judgement ruled but that man never was convicted, not even a finger pointed at him! He got religion? Will he be, or was he forgiven and never discover their behavior is ill and DESTRUCTIVE? HOW do these people live with themselves?

Here’s my take from personal experience…my son was a victim years ago [w/numerous other boys]. After getting this “deal” the abuser went to prison and ended up on the “religious” hall and has spent his time there. Tell me this is fair??? I’ve watched it happen in “our” case. BUT, the SOB in “our” case has had to do EVERY day of his time and so far is still doing his time…it was just he cried “religion” and stayed in a “special” section of the prison…so I hear. THIS IS NOT RIGHT EITHER!!! There should be NO “special” hall for religious inmates…suck it up and live in general population!!! [jmo]

Wish him the biggest best roomie in the pen… This guy a real child preditor gets a deal. But a person downloading legal video on limewire and accidentally gets a little child porn and deletes it gets mandatory 5 yrs. plus. no “DEALS”.
    JUSTICE ???????

  5. Angi on October 1st, 2010 7:05 am

All I can say is, if it were my child that he molested; he wouldn’t have to worry about a trial or anything else for that matter, because I would be the one probably on trial!!! It takes a mentally derranged individual to do something like this to innocent children. There is no telling just how many he has done this to, but may god bless each and every one of them…

  6. Simple Solution on September 30th, 2010 5:03 pm

I agree with everybody. But are you willing to pay to have this man locked up for life. Some of you would be the first ones to complain of higher taxes to run prisons. Shoot them with a .22, save us (taxpayers) money, and clean up the gene pool in one easy step.

  7. shae on September 30th, 2010 4:20 pm

DEAL!?!?! What kinda “DEAL” did the victim get? Doesn’t she deserve something better then that monster got? I say mandatory castration on the way out for him.

  8. Bank Teller in Atmore on September 30th, 2010 2:06 pm

They should have gave him LIFE. God Bless the children he molested !!! Anyone that does that to a child should go to jail forever or even be put to DEATH. Children are so INNOCENT !!!!

You know , even chickens will kill another chicken for no visible reason, they just know something is wrong whith that chicken. Now that we know that there is somthing wrong with this chicken , dont we have a right to do what is best for our flock. A child molester CAN NOT be rehabilitated.

    I’m with
‘robert’…If it were myif it were my child there wouldn’t be any need for a trial!!!!!
How can you DROP charges if they are GUILTY?!!! What a sick individual! Doesn’t deserve to breathe air if you ask me!

  11. Paul on September 30th, 2010 12:46 pm

The prosecutor and judge should be ashamed for Not protecting the innocent children, letting this man off easy is sending the wrong message to other potential child molesters. He should get life.

  12. MY OPINION...for what it's worth! on September 30th, 2010 12:26 pm

    Justice falling through the cracks!

If it were my 12 year old child that was molested by this pervert and the prosecutor dropped the charges because of a plea bargain, I would make sure that when he was released, justice got served by the Parent Circuit Court.
Call it an eye for an eye!

He used the radio station to attract kids AND the parents, leading them to think they would become famous by doing commercials on air.
Parents put thier trust in this man, old Walter Jay, who molested children left in his care.
I wonder just how many children he has actually molested, who never told for fear of being ignored by the system, ashamed, or scared.
I think all victims should come forward.

if it were my child there wouldn’t be any need for a trial!!!!!

The man from Gulf Breeze killed himself before he was returned to Florida. I’m sure everyone knew his family. It would be my guess that they were not protected when they went to High School.

  16. anydaynow on September 30th, 2010 8:33 am

Yeah, you really have to wonder about a prosecutor and a judge and a system that would have enough sympathy for a man such as this to take it upon themselves to excuse him of such a crime.
Remember the case of the Assistant U.S. Attorney ( federal prosecutor) from over in Gulf Breeze that was actually caught in the process of carrying out a plan to have sex with a very young child?? Didn’t hear about it?? It got swept under the rug real quick “to protect his family”

Geee,he sure doesn’t look like a monster,,,my bad.neither did Ted Bundy.Once again our judicial system lets the victim down.

Well, its about time old Walter goes to the slammer.
I personally know of a child he abused, had her thinking he was going to make her a star by doing “commercials” for him, all the while having BAD intentions and actions!
She was smart enough to tell on him, give graphic details, draw pictures, but it just wasn’t enough evidence for the police to arrest him.

This is one story I read with a BIG smile on my face!

Word of advice to Old “walter Jay” …..hmmmm….never mind….you’ll find out soon enough.

Very sad, they can “drop” the other charge because of a “deal.” So that victim gets no justice. The man is obviously a predator. I don’t feel like they should be able to “drop” any sexual abuse charges in any case. I bet if that child would have been an officers, lawyers, or judges child there would have been no deal. I’m sure that the prison system will take care of this predator, or “chester.” My prayers are with the families and people hurt by this horrible monster.
