Man Assaults Underage Brother With Can Of Food

September 14, 2010

A Cantonment man is behind bars facing several charges after allegedly hitting his underage brother in the head with a can of food from the family’s kitchen.

Justin Douglas Kent, 23, of Kingsfield Road, is charged with misdemeanor battery and felony counts of aggravated battery and cruelty toward a child. He remains in the Escambia County Jail with bond set at $15,000.

According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office report, Kent got into a fight with his 17-year old brother. In their home’s kitchen, Kent grabbed an “unopened nonperishable metal can” and struck his younger brother in the head and face.

The younger brother was found bleeding on a neighbor’s porch by an arriving deputy, who described his wound as “a large gash that did have a curve shape to it.”

Kent told the deputy that his brother had been nagging him all day and refusing to do chores. He said he grabbed the metal can to defend himself as he was being hit repeatedly in the head by his younger brother.

The can, with a large dent in it, was photographed as evidence, according to the ECSO report, Kent was transported to jail, and the younger brother was transported by ambulance to West Florida Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

OK, IM SORRY PEOPLE BUT ME BEING A NURSE AND SEEING WHAT I DO EVERYDAY, ITS NOT JUST A GOOD OL BROTHERLY FIST FIGHT WHEN A CAN OF FOOD GOES UPSIDE A CHILDS HEAD ! THE DAMAGE COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL ! THIS BOY IS LUCKY TO BE ALIVE, SO MUCH OTHER THINGS COULD HAVE BEEN THE RESULT. REGARDLESS OF WHO’S FAULT IT IS VIOLENCE IS NOT THE ANSWER ! BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER AND IF THE BOYS EVER DID LOVE EACHOTHER THEN NO COURT SYSTEM OR MONEY WILL MATTER ! THEY WILL FORGIVE EACHOTHER DOWN THE ROAD I AM SURE, MAY TAKE A WHILE BUT THATS LIFE, HOWEVER THIS 23 YR OLD SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR HIS ACTIONS AND THIS YOUNGER BROTHER WHOM IS STILL A MINOR COULD HAVE BEEN VERY BADLY HURT OR EVEN WORSE AND DEAD. I AM SURE HIS INJURIES ARE TERRIBLE AS IS SEEING HOW HE WAS BLEEDING AND HAD A HUGE GASH, HOPE HE DOES NOT SUFFER ANY BRAIN INJURIES FROM THIS AS OUR BRAIN IS NOT AS HARD AS A METAL CAN. POOR PARENTS, I KNOW THIS HAS TO BE HARD ON THEM, I WILL PRAYING FOR ALL INVOLVED. :(

It says “he grabbed the can to defend himself”. I wonder why the younger brother wasn’t charged?

Because this man has been arrested and charged with two felonies. The Century man has *not* been charged with any crime *yet*. The information has been submitted to a judge to sign a warrant.

We generally don’t identify persons that have not been charged with a crime because there’s always the chance the judge won’t sign the warrant. Unless the charges against the Century man are upgraded, he will only face a misdemeanor charge. We usually only report only felony arrests, but did the Century man story only because there was a manhunt involved. Since we did that story, we will run his name and mugshot when he is arrested as a followup story.

When a person doesn’t do his job they normally get canned. I’m sure the Judge will explain to the older brother that you can’t do this in a physical manor. It appears that we had two Indians here that both wanted to be chiefs. Question: Who threw the first lick?

Our society has really changed. Back in the day, you could have a good old fashoned fistfight with your brother, (me the youngest) a good old fashoined bruising, get down and in the dirt fight and besides a few skinned up knuckles, knees, bloody nose and perhaps a black eye, we came away with it with appreciation, a learning experience, honor and respect for each other. Later in the day, we were not sore with each other and actually would discuss how hilarious it all was and perhaps learn a little about defending yourself.
Now days, if you bump someone in public, the cops get involved, someone goes to jail and a ton of money gets spent toward the courts, the machine of “justice” gets to make high profits, while they snicker about how much money they are making over cocktails at the watering hole downtown.

I don’t condone violence, someone could be seriously injured and in this case, the hospital involved (would not have been involved back in the day, some iodine and band aid would have been enough) but this is two brothers having a scuffle and now due to this incident, they will more than not ever love each other or respect one another. Especially so since so much money will not have to be spent.
