Manhunt Puts College On Lockdown; Suspect Arrested

September 1, 2010

Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton was on lockdown Wednesday morning as manhunt was underway for a suspect that fled from police.

According to Brewton Police Chief Monte McGougin, authorities were searching for a man wanted for DUI that fled from officers last night.  Benjamin Jackson was taken into custody early Wednesday afternoon. He was being treated for minor injuries received while he was one the run overnight in a wooded area near the college.

Jackson allegedly hit a house with his car Tuesday night. A manhunt  for Jackson followed but was called off without success about midnight. Someone spotted Jackson about 8:00 Wednesday morning near Pea Ridge Road.

“He’s not going to be real dangerous,” McGougin said as the manhunt was underway. He described the suspect as a white male wearing red boxer shorts.

The lockdown at Jeff Davis was lifted about 10:45 a.m..

In response to your question as to how we went from drunks in red boxers to garbage workers:

One commenter thought tracking the gentleman down was a waste of resources and implied the law enforcement officers to be dumber than garbage truck workers. That offended the garbage drivers–being sensitive souls.

First, let me say, that is Delaney with a Y and not without, what does any of this garbage man stuff have to do with a lockdown at JD. Was there a first part of this article that I missed. And, does anyone have spell check?

Garbage truck driver is a honest living unlike the payoffs most of our local law enforcement officers take….W/o them we would have our trash piled up…The world could not function W/O the garbage truck driver.

It takes a lot to qualify for a garbage truck job..First of all, one must pass a cdl test to get licensed and pass a driving test. Seldom do u see a rider on the back of a truck. So the driver has to watch for traffc as they pick up cans that people do not know how to sit out by the road so he can pick them up.
Thanks to all you garbage truck drivers that pick our trash up..
Maybe a long time ago any one could have worked for the garbage company…but not anymore

I’m a student at Jeff Davis and I am glad they locked the school down. I am proud to be a part of a school and community that cares about its students! Thanks for keeping us up to date, and safe, JD and city of Brewton! (:

    Dear “Huh” . . . .

There are lots of buildings on that campus with lots of rooms where someone could run, hide, and stay for a while — and possibly harm people in the process. Be glad that the JDCC administration cares enough about its faculty, staff, and students to make this call. It is better to be cautious than to look back a few days later and wonder . . . “Where did we go wrong? How could we have prevented this catastrophe?” Tragedies at Virginia Tech and Columbine have forever the changed the face of “being too cautious” . . . There is no such thing anymore.

Why would they lock down the whole school over a man thats running from a dui. Paranoid much?

While this is not a funny situation and I hope they catch the guy without anyone getting hurt I still had to laugh at the “red boxers”, what an image! Not like he can blend into the woods with them.
