Candidates for the Century Town Council have filed their second round of campaign finance reports, providing some insight into their supporters and the expenses needed to gain a council seat in the town with just over 1,000 voters.

Seat 5

Annie Carter Savage
Sandra McMurray Jackson

Candidate Annie Carter Savage had raised the most dollars by the end of the most recent reporting period, with $1,095 contributed to her campaign. Her opponent, Sandra McMurray-Jackson, had raised no money during the same period. Both women are candidates for the seat currently held by Sharon Scott, who is not seeking re-election.

Savage’s largest reported contributions were $200 each  from Century Mayor Freddie McCall, his wife Margie and his daughter Sonja McCall. Other contributions were from Julie Booth Moran ($100), Lloyd Savage ($10), Annie Carter Savage ($200) and Lomonica Savage Shoemo ($100), Benny Barnes ($35),  and Marilyn Robinson ($50).

Savage reported spending just $31 in the second finance reporting period of August 28-September 10. The funds were spent for gas, according to her filings with the Supervisor of Elections.

McMurray-Jackson reported receiving no contributions during the reporting period and $75 total since she qualified. She first reported spending $255.60 on campaign signs on September 18, but then amended her filing to remove the expenditure that was outside the August 28-September 10 reporting period.

Seat 3

Henry Hawkins
Jacke Johnston
Robert Lasher

Candidate Robert Lasher has reported $595 in total contributions to his campaign — all of which were prior to the most recent reporting period. His largest contributor was Century Council President Ann Brooks with $250.  During the August 28-September 10 period, Lasher reported receiving $65 of in-kind contributions in the form of campaign sign stakes from Ken McMurry of Century and Bo Brantly of Flomaton.

During the August 28-September 10 reporting period, candidate Jacke Johnston reported $375 in contributions — all from John B. Johnston. She reported a $374.50 expenditure for campaign signs.

Incumbent Henry Hawkins reported zero contributions during the reporting period, and expenditures of $64.50 for “labels for signs”.

Does Annie Carter Savage not know that the money from the mayor of Century buys all of her votes good or bad for the entire time (if she gets Seat 5) she is on the council, it is so sad, long time ago all we needed to do was have a fish fry on the corner and all the black votes was a done deal, now all you have to do is give some money and the deal is in the bank. I must say good luck Annie and I trust that you can sleep at night when the mayor ask you to sell your own family down the road, because he has your vote. Don’t be a prositute for the town of Century be your own person give the money back and take your medicine as prescribe. I would rather be known as my own person than a person that sold their soul to the highest bidder.

Just maybe the maylor and his family believe in you Annie but I know you from time back when you worked at the Insurance Company in Brewton, but that is our secret right. Like why you left all of sudden. Annie together we will survive correct spelling and all.

Hawkins might be man of his own vision but you can never say his vote was or has been up for sale. No I did not agree with him at all times but I do see his point

“Vote for Ann Brooks” – don’t see her listed above. Is she side-stepping the reporting law or is she not running? And every politician will end up with a sign somewhere its not supposed to be. A lot of times friends just take signs and put them out thinking they are helping.

Somebody’s just trying to stir up trouble…

Mr. Lasher also posted some signs illegally at some businesses. They ended up having to take them down. I guess he didn’t read the book about where campaign signs can be posted and that you need to get permission to post them at certain places. It seems to me that he is already trying to “get away” with things and will be just a “yes m’aam” vote for Ann Brooks.

Vote anyone but Hawkins! Get him out!

Mr Lasher needs to read his election book, his campaign signs are illegal. he should have to correct them or take them down
