Authorities Collected Old Medicines As Part Of National Program

September 26, 2010

Out of date and unwanted prescription medications were collected at two locations in Escambia County Saturday, part of a national Drug Enforcement Administration program.

“Prescription drug abuse is not uncommon in our community and this is an opportunity for members of our community to get rid of their unwanted drugs before they fall into the hands of someone who may misuse them,” Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said.

Escambia County deputies collected the prescription drugs at  Walgreen’s at 4497 Mobile Highway and at CVS at 2090 South Highway 29 as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s  free National Drug Take Back Day.

I hear so many times that when some one is finished with a prescription drug they flush it down the toilet. This was once considered the safest way to dispose of them, but no longer. Please, please do NOT flush them. They are an environmental hazard. Trace amounts of prescription drugs have been found in water supplies. If you toss them in the trash they can contaminate soil.

This program is not only good to prevent drug abuse, but it is good the environment and for the health of others. If you use pharmaceuticals, please remember this program.
