Arrested Firefighter No Longer Responding To Calls

A Century volunteer firefighter arrested Tuesday is not responding to the department’s calls for help.
Dustin Ryan Burkett, 28, of Century, is facing one felony count of lewd and lascivious battery on a victim 12 to 15 years of age, one felony count of grand theft, and misdemeanor charges of abandonment of animals and obstruction of justice.
“He is not answering calls at this time,” according to Century Assistant District Chief David Adams said Wednesday. Disciplinary action taken by the department on September 1 forbid Burkett from responding to emergency calls, Adams said.

THIS MAN NEEDS TO BE GIVEN A BREAK, COME ON PEOPLE….. I MEAN REALLY ! IN THE OLD DAYS THE DOGS WOULD HAVE JUST BEEN SHOT BY SOME PASSING COWBOY AND PEOPLE WERE MARRIED AT 13 ? GET OVER IT AND LET THIS MAN GET BACK THE RESPECT HE DESERVES ! MISTAKES HAPPEN AND THERE ARE LAWS… MOST LAWS ARE BROKEN BY THE LAW ENFORCEMENT THEMSELVES…. HMM….SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT THERE !
Befogged…the original report posted on this site reported that the girl was interviewed at school by either police/investigators a very short time after this incident occurred and that the family pursued charges last year..So the real question is why did it take so long for something to be done about it? I’m sure it had nothing to do with Dustins father being the chief that wouldn’t happen in small towns would it?

You know, I’ve read all the comments for days. Guess I’m in a cloud~or in another world. I thought in our country a person had to be proven guilty before he could be crucified. I don’t know about the dogs~ I was not there. I do know there are a lot of folks who have bull dogs and raise them to fight and mutilate or kill one another~ that I think is a sin by any standard! As for the girl~ I do not know her. Seems like I read that the sexual act was done at Lake Stone in March of last year??? What was she doing at Lake Stone instead of school? Was she kidnapped and taken there against her wishes Or did she meet him there or willingly go there with him? I was once a girl~ many years ago, but, a boy would only do what a girl would allow him to do or intise him to do. (With the exception of rape) But this seemed like a mutual act between the two of them. As for her age, maybe she said she was older~ lots of young girls nowadays dress and makeup to look much older than they are. Who can tell? I’m not condoning sex with an under age girl~ I don’t condone sex outside of marriage but it happens all the time. Supposing all that he has been accused of is true, you who are without sin, throw your stone! But, I’m tired of all the accusing! My question is~ why does the guy always pay when the girl willingly participated? Why does she not have to be accountable for her actions? In the Bible, they would BOTH be stoned! So, get two rocks while you are at it!! Maybe he should have known better, hello~ ever heard of “hindsight~20/20″? But, when tempted, sometimes the hormones kick in and the brain just takes a break. Is it right? NO! But things happen. And why is she squealing a year later? Was she hoping to trap him and when he backed off she got mad? Beats me! Just sounds like a dumb soap opera to me. I’m tired of hearing about it. I don’t waste my time with them on tv and I don’t want to hear any more! I dare say that there is not one family who doesn’t have something they are not proud of. If there be one family, at least some of their relatives have done dumb stuff! That’s my opinion…everybody’s got one, but noone cares! And, I may have mispelled a word now and then, but, senior citizens aren’t suppose to remember how to spell. And no, I’m not from Century, never have been, never will be. God bless this family and give them strength to go through what’s ahead for them and may the Lord have mercy on them in the weeks and months ahead.
i have nothing against century firedepartment.. in fact i have some really close friends from their.. BUT when thiss all went down a year ago they let him back in.. and i know for a fact that it didnt stop.. im just curious if they are gona let him back in or not.. BUT I SUPPORT OUR FIREFIGHTERS 100% !!! thank you and God bless

Mr. Burkett’s admission to abandoning the dogs that he took responsibility for, and then trying to cover it up by lying AND trying to get someone else to lie for him (all unethical acts) should have resulted in his IMMEDIATE TERMINATION from the fire department.
Wake Up I think you need to step back yourself and look at the facts. There is a career crew in the department because the volunteer staffing has so been low. A majority of the volunteers in that station did not have the minimum training required by Florida to fight fire until the county stepped in and forced their hand .
How many times have other departments been called to cover Century’s calls because there was no one available (3 out of 5 when the career crew was off duty)? How many times did High and Mighty Chief Burkett tell the career crew “We got it” on holidays and yet still no one ran calls.
Century has excellent equipment and supplies, but only because Chief Burkett made some down and dirty deals with the county to get it. Example…. why is the station with the LOWEST CALL LOAD equipped with 4 new (less than 4 years old) trucks? I am all for new equipment, but other stations that run 5x as many calls as them probably needed a new truck first.
Why is Chief Burkett running around in a new pick-up truck provided by the county (using county gas) and yet you almost never see him on a call? The sad truth to it is that as soon as I heard about the dog incident I was wondering how Randy would try to cover it up or sweep it under the rug. Personally I don’t think the media coverage should have been the deciding factor in his status with the department (you notice it took almost two weeks for them to say no running calls?).
I am all for supporting our dedicated firefighters, both volunteer and career, but you had better look at the real situation before you just start blaring that everything is peachy when it is not.
All of the ignorant people need to put the computer down and step away… slowly. Century Volunteer Fire Department is an amazing department with amazing members who put their life on the line 24/7 for the people in Century and surrounding communities. Yes, they even put their life on the line for ignorant people who blame the department as a whole for the choices ONE made. Why? Because they took an oath to provide aid to those in need. This isn’t their day job. They don’t have to do it. Appropriate action was taken by the department when this situation arose. So please keep your mouth shut about things you know nothing about. And please, if you have such a big problem with the department, remember that when your house is on fire or you have been in an accident. Even though you have passed judgement on those who are here to help you, it doesn’t matter. They will still be there when the alarm sounds.
Susie I wouldn’t leave in Century for many reasons…along with hundreds of other places. I’ve lived within 20 miles of it all my life. So I do know what’s going on there. Never said there weren’t successful people there, obviously you can’t comprehend what you read. For the most part its the local government and city officials I’m referring to that can’t get anything right there which the fire department falls under even though its not in century. The situation has not been handle correctly period. I hope he goes to jail for a long time. Do not put my words out of context Susie.

He is in a public servant position and should have been fired then but I’m sure his father the chief didn’t see anything wrong with that…again proving my point below.

Just because it’s the “Century” fire department, it is not part of the town – if you knew what you were talking about, you’d know the fire station is not in the Century town limits. People from all over work out of there – it’s a County department.
And I agree with Susie q – there are a lot of real and reasonable, upstanding and law-abiding people there – and from there.
Theft becomes grand theft when the value is three hundred dollars or greater.
Who would want someone responding to their house that would cut the dogs loose and go after their underage daughter?
In response to nudo… You obviously aren’t from Century! Don’t speak of things you have no knowledge of. If you did, you would know that there are LOTS of successful people that live there or are from there!! I’m not going to even ask where you are from.
He’s accused and basically will be registered as a sex affender…I’m sure your not aloud to be in public service….but I would not be surprised if century let him work…that’s the mind set in that town.
Can someone explain the grand theft charge? Is he being charged with stealing the Dogs??
