Man Found Dead By Highway 29 In McDavid Identified

August 12, 2010

Investigators have identified the man whose body was found next to Highway 29 Tuesday morning in McDavid.

The body of Donald Freeman, 49, of Pensacola was found lying face down in high grass a few feet off the side of Highway 29 just north of the West Fraser McDavid sawmill about 9:20 Tuesday morning.

“We have ruled any blunt force trauma, and there are no signs of foul play,” said Sgt. Ted Roy, spokesperson for the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. Roy also said there were no obvious signs of trauma that would indicate Freeman was struck by a passing vehicle.

However, Roy said the cause of Freeman’s death is still unknown. He said the department is still waiting for toxicology and additional test results.

Freeman was believed to be walking toward Century were he had relatives, Roy said.

I see that the grass is being mowed today. And by the way, who found this guy and what were the circumstances of the discovery?

I live off hwy 29 farther south than where the body was found and you could be missing for days in the tall grass alone 29.

Prayers to the loved ones this man has left behind, especially with no answers of why he is gone. REMEMBER, Life is not the breath that you take, but the moments that take your breath away! Keep those moments of your loved close to your heart and he will forever be with you while you are on this earth!

A MAN FOUND dead in HIGH GRASS!!! If it was SHORT GRASS/MOWED GRASS, he would not been there (with all the traffic, considering night or day) w/out being seen for so long-if only a few feet from the roadside. THAT is the ISSUE about the grass! Especailly, Bahia Grass. Come on SOME of you people, Pull your head out of the dark place you have it stuck and actually think before you speak/post a comment!

The county doesn’t mow 29 (STATE)…and I can’t believe that was even brought up.

CONCERNED I agree with you, a man is found DEAD on side of the road and they want to talk about grass? bash the County? and have NO feelings at all for his friends & family. WOW!

  8. Concerned citizen on August 12th, 2010 1:02 pm

Really? Everyone is going to talk about the grass? Ok…that’s crazy….
prayers to the family so sorry for your loss.

IF THE GRASS IS SUCH AN ISSUE AND THE COUNTY IS NOT TAKING CARE OF IT…(LIKE THEY DON’T HAVE A MILLION OTHER THINGS TO DO…..WHY DON’T YOU CONCERNED UP STANDING CITIZENS VOLANTEER (i know it is spelled wrong) TO CUT THE GRASS.

  10. TERESA on August 12th, 2010 12:10 pm

COME ON PEOPLE…I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU DEBATING THE GRASS….NOBODY KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED. HE COULD HAVE HAD A HEART ATTACK, COULD HAVE OVER DOSED ON DRUGS. NO BODY KNOWS….SO PLEASE MAKE THESE COMMENTS ABOUT THE VICTIM INSTEAD OF THE DARN GRASS.

Granted i know they have cut the grass a few time it still could be kept up more! we waste enough money n this country we could keep it up better if it needs to be cut once a week then get it done! But at least he was found! it could have been a missing persons cast which it would have been worse on the fsmily not ever having closer

just wondering what has happened. Wish he could have been found maybe alive. Yes I think the grass might have kept him from be discoverd earlier. Lets all pray that he did not suffer. Just wish we knowed something.

Those contract grass cutters do a far better job of keeping the grass cut than the state did. With all the rain and intense heat it is impossible to keep bahia grass looking neat.It can grow more than an inch per day in these conditions.

TERI…Are you from this area? When you are the 2nd highest rain fall area in the Nation that tends to happen in my yard in two weeks if i go on Vacation.

God bless the Family, I hope they find out who he is quickly.

I hate to see speculation start up, you never know, he may have family that will read your comments, and that could be very hurtful for them to have to think about it :(

The grass on hwy 29 has been cut at least three times this summer. It is contracted out and they can only do so much with all the rain. Release some tax dollars and maybe we could pay for some help. I too feel for the family, whoever it is but try not to pass blame on a state worker for this.

  18. TERI on August 12th, 2010 8:12 am

I must agree with Dorie. The grass looks like it might not have been cut all summer long. If it was a hit and run, he might have still been alive and just lied there for days before he actually died. My heart goes out to the family and everyone involved. May he rest in peace.

If the grass were cut more often this poor man could have been found sooner…Blessings sent to his family..
