Qualls Re-elected Jay Mayor; One Incumbent, One Newcomer Elected To Council
August 25, 2010
(Updated) It now appears that Jay’s mayor has been re-elected — by just one vote — and there is one new member on the town council.
Mayor
Complete, but unofficial, election results show incumbent Mayor Kurvin Qualls (pictured) received 72 votes while political newcomer Ben Hudson received 71 votes.
Tuesday night, election results reported as being complete by the Santa Rosa County Supervisor of Elections showed Hudson with one more vote than Qualls, but those results were later updated to show Qualls as the winner.
The vote totals must be certified by the Santa Rosa County Supervisor of Elections Office prior to becoming official.
Qualls has served as Jay’s mayor for the past four years, and he had previously served for four years on the town council.
Town Council
Newcomer Shon O. Owens received 85 votes and incumbent Charles “Chubby” Haveard received 77 votes to be elected to two seats on the town council. Incumbent Jackie Stewart-Ard received 67 votes and lost her council seat.
Town Clerk
With no opposition on the ballot, Town Clerk Linda Carden was automatically re-elected to her post.

The election is so NOT FISHIE!!!!Kurvin won fair and square. Even if just by one vote. He has done a great job for the Town. Congrats to him and keep up the good work!!!!
Lee-
I beg people to come to a town council meeting.. They are the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month at 6pm. I can tell you from being in the audience.. That the silence is deafening..
Everyone is quick to jump on the council’s back about everything, but no one shows up to the meetings.. Are you even informed about what is in the works, about the financial shape the town is in (actually good compared to others in the area)
What about local business owner’s?? Do you go complain to them about there buildings needing spruced up? Better yet do you even shop local?? or do you run to Brewton or Pace?
I am so sick of everyone blaming the “government” when all you want is a hand out and for the “government” to play mama and daddy.
Our community needs to come together and start caring, stop shopping at Walmart. Start shopping locally as much as they can and business will come to Jay. So quit blaming the council for all the problems when our own citizenery are just as much to blame.
Jay started dying when its own people started shopping elsewhere. That is the plain and simple answer.. We will never be a huge industrial draw again, because we have no rail spur, no interstate, no port.
So with that said, we need to focus on our postives, Ag, Great people, great schools, and a great town to live in.
So with that said, guess we will see you at the next council meeting..
This dose not just sound fishie it is. We needed change in Jay and we had a good man running. Jay had a real change for some new leadership it is sad some people
refuse to advance with the times. They ask for new leadership and and then they don’t suport it.
Please, the ladies working at the polling place are above reproach.
Plus, the Clerk, Kurvin, Ben Jerry, Shon and others were all there standing in the doorway of the polling place when the ticker tape printed out with the results.. They posted them on the glass door of the civic center.
Everyone there knew the count with the exception of the absentee ballots which were in Milton.
So I don’t know what issue was with getting the digital machine to Milton. But these were the numbers from 7:30 last night until Midnight.. they just were known locally and not on the website for the supervisor.
Ballot boxes left at the polling place…….handicapped votes…….both in favor of the incumbent ……….this smells a little like the “fix was in”
Did they get someone from Century to count the votes?
Kurvin has done a good job, if the votes don’t change again Congrats to him!
