Atmore Man, 19, Killed In Old Atmore Road Crash

June 19, 2010

An Atmore man died and two others were injured in a single vehicle accident early Saturday morning on Old Atmore Road near Flomaton.

Alabama State Troopers said Emmanuel Markay Rivers, 19, was a passenger in the accident about about 3:30 a.m.  about a half mile west of Tulip Street.

The driver of a Ford Crown Victoria, Cardarryl Delloyd Johnson, 21, was westbound on a straight stretch of Old Atmore Road when he lost control and flipped the vehicle over, according to AST. Johnson, 21, and another passenger, Trenetra Zakiya White, 19, were transported by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital in serious condition.

Rivers, who state troopers said was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Johnson, the driver, said he had swerved to miss a deer. The Crown Victoria flipped twice before coming to rest on its roof, partially in the roadway.

The accident is still under investigation by Alabama State Troopers.

My blessings to all the families. There have been approximately 5 accidents in that area within the past year and a half. The Town of Fomaton cannot run radar in that area ( what I was told) I would like to see speed breakers or actions taken to slow the drivers down in that area. The previous writer is correct about the noise level from people speeding on that road. It used to be a less traveled road years ago. It also needs striping, cannot see the stripes in the road when it is raining or dark. Again, my blessing to all the families. May God bless you.

OMG! From looking through these photo’s, I am shocked that there were any suvivors… These are aweful…

  14. Angi on June 20th, 2010 12:53 pm

What a horrible tragedy, and excuse me! This report does not say anything about drinking nor speeding, is merely states that the driver swerved to miss a deer; and yes the deer are out and they surely will just jump right out in front of you. I however do wish that Emmanuel Markay Rivers would have been wearing his seatbelt, it may would have saved his life, but then again who really knows. My heart and thoughts go out to this young mans family, friends and loved ones. To all involved, I hope you all get well soon…

I will miss u my boy and so many others will to. U will neva be forgotten. How could I forget a real homie? I can’t. Rest in peace my boy. U dnt have to worry no more, u in a better place now… 2-12!!!

  16. sad on June 20th, 2010 7:33 am

Ask the occupants themselves and those that were with them prior to the accident if they all 3 (two underage) had been drinking and driving over the speed limit. (just one drink affects your judgement-you dont have to be legally drunk to ne impaired). No one was wearing a seatbelt. Not one comment I read here was disrespectful to the families and no one in those very early morning hours treated the occupants or their families with anything but concern, sympathy and respect.

They will have to live with this loss for the rest of thier lives, which is incredibly sad. But instead of getting defensive or wanting to ignore what happened, how about using this event as a difficult yet very, valuable lesson to be learned? I talked to Cardarryl&his mother at length and can just about bet that he will become a strong advocate and pour his pain from the loss of his friend into educating people to help prevent another tragedy. And there isnt anything disrepectful about that. Again much sympathy&strength to all the families.

    REGARDING:
“The Crown Victoria flipped twice before coming to rest on its roof, partially in the roadway.”

Don’t put me in a car which can flip twice at 45.

David now scared of Crown Vics

“Maybe the city should consider putting speed bumps ”

    outside of city jurisdiction.

  22. jlh on June 19th, 2010 10:09 pm

That is why I wont go “timber cruisn” for some stupid animal. Its best just to slam on the brakes and hit the deer if you cant safely miss it. I know thats not the natural thing to do, but around here you gotta be prepared for things like that. My sympathies to that young boys family. I hope the others will be ok too.

    Amen Tasha!!

  24. Tasha-Mac on June 19th, 2010 6:51 pm

No one said these young people were drinking, doing drugs or speeding. It states plain from the driver which I have known since he has been in this world that he had to swirve to miss a deer and the car over turned. Where are all the other comments coming from. GOD says “do not lean to your own understanding”. And for sure do not judge. There are only 3 people that can testifiy to this accident, one is gone to be with his maker and may he rest in peace and 2 were left to tell the story at their own time. And of course GOD knows all. So just pray for the Rivers family and pray for Cardell and White to keep them strong during this time.

    RIP Rivers

It looks to me like they were commenting on all the accidents in general. So many accidents have been happening lately from all kinds of carelessness. I don’t think they meant it that way. God bless all involved. Remember everyone makes mistakes…everyone just pray and hope for better choices and safer driving all around. :)

WE all have made some bad choices in life and sometimes they end with tragic results. Hopefully someone will take heed to this horrific happening and just be carefull. Our prayers goes out to all the families and friends that are in deep deep sorrow at this time.

That car was moving prior to collision. Wow. RIP to the decedent and get wells to the injured. Watch your speed people. Speed kills.

  32. pjp on June 19th, 2010 1:15 pm

To everyone commenting on this report, I am asking you to please show some sympathy and respect. I have known this child since he was born. His mother is very ill and needs our prayers. As a mother who lost a child, I know this pain all to well and nothing we say good or bad will bring him back. So as a very close friend to this family, please give them your prayers and remember no matter how you say what your children will and will not do, this could be your pain one day. Thank you for your respect at this time.

  33. Shea on June 19th, 2010 1:03 pm

Maybe the city should consider putting speed bumps along the road like they did on Highland Ave. I live on College and we see a lot of people speeding. It makes me very nervous. And there are a lot of kids living in that area whose safety is at risk.

  34. OldAtmoreRdResident on June 19th, 2010 10:06 am

THERE ARE SOOO MANY PEOPLE THAT FLY UP & DOWN OLD ATMORE ROAD. THERE HAVE BEEN ABOUT 5-6 ACCIDENTS IN THE PAST 2 YEARS. I KNOW THE ROAD HAS SOME BAD CURVES AND THE ROAD ISN’T IN THE BEST SHAPE, BUT THE SPEED LIMIT IS 45. EVERY SINGLE DAY I CAN BE SITTING IN MY LIVING ROOM WATCHING TV AND IT SOUNDS LIKE A ROCKET JUST FLEW BY THE HOUSE. THEY GO BY SO FAST YOU COULDNT EVEN GET UP QUICK ENOUGH TO SEE WHAT COLOR CAR IT IS! PEOPLE NEED TO SLOW DOWN ON THIS ROAD! ESPECIALLY IN THE BAD CURVE BEFORE TOM SHIVERS ROAD WHERE ONE OF OUR BEST FRIENDS WAS KILLED. PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS COMING OVER THE LINE RIGHT THERE BECAUSE THEY’RE TOO INCONSIDERATE TO SLOW DOWN AND STAY ON THEIR SIDE OF THE ROAD! JUST DO IT! LEAVE ALITTLE EARLIER AND YOU WONT HAVE TO DRIVE FAST TO WHEREVER YOU’RE GOING. IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE OR SOMEONE ELSE’S!!

  35. sad on June 19th, 2010 9:25 am

When in the world will people ever learn to slow the heck down, to not drink and drive, to buckle up, to act responsibly? This was a senseless, preventable tragedy that ended a young life and will forever alter many lives. (The injured will be fine physically, thank goodness).
It is sad for all the families but makes one angry at the same time for the needless loss for everyone involved. The good that may come out of this is that the two survivors learn and apply some very hard, valuable lessons and make positive changes in thier lives…maybe even prevent others from making the same poor choices. Then that young man will not have died in vain. Sympathies to the families.

My sympathies to the family of the deceased. I hope the injured pull through.

Take a look at photo 013 and focus on those wheels. If you’re one who has similar stylish wheels on your vehicle you might want to go back to more conventional equipment. Just guessing.

I just pray for the people involved and everyone who will be hurt by this awful tragedy.
