June 17, 2010
There were no injuries in a single vehicle accident Thursday morning on Highway 97 near Walnut Hill.
The driver of a southbound Chrysler 300 apparently lost control south of Howell Road and ran off the road into a ditch about 7:15 a.m.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Department was responding a report of a vehicle with a similar description driving recklessly in the area at the time of the accident. Deputies had not yet caught up with the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue, Atmore Ambulance at the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash, along with the Florida Highway Patrol. The accident is still under investigation by the FHP.

I think the main problem is either not paying attention, or just plain ignorance. Sometimes my job requires me to stop on the side of the highway several times a day, depending on the shoulder of the road, sometimes I can’t get more than a foot or two off the road. It’s unbelievable the number of people that simply will not move one inch to the left to provide a little more of a safety buffer. Just today I had stopped on the side of the road and a woman with three children in her car passed just a foot or so from my truck. The thing was it was a long straight stretch of highway legal to pass in either direction, with at least 500 yards of visibility in both directions, no other vehicles on the road. Did she move over, not one inch, she hugged the right side shoulder of the highway as she passed. To me this is just pure stupidity.
@ Listening.. I was in the red car in front of the Honda Odyssey they tailgated me all the way to 20 and I was going 65
The problems on hwy. 97 are getting worse daily. It is hard to believe that something is on this site almost every day about wrecks. In reference to Tung Oil Road there is only one occupied house on it but it is a great cut-off to get to S. hwy. 99 and points west of there. The road is straight there (97) so visibility is not a problem. At the risk of sounding like a broken record- speed and not paying attention is the big problem.
Common sense is not so common anymore.
I saw this car this morning right before this accident. He was driving wayyyyy off the road and into ditches then!!
What is it about Hwy 97? Years ago, I had a neighbor who died in a head-on collision there on the way to pick up his pay check. This happened when a fellow employee fell asleep at the wheel after working the night shift, and crossed the center line. What is the explanation for the ones we read about here, continously, and what is it about Tungoil Road? It seems someone needs to study that.
I was tailgated severely this morning @ 7:20 am near Molino Park and was passed in the final stretch between the curve and the Tom Thumb. I was doing 60, so I wasn’t driving “too slow” I then watched the Honda Odyssey turn right onto the turn lane headed south on 29 and pass a car that was turning in front of him in the acceleration lane.
Monday I was behind a guy who was less than a car length behind a large RV towing a car for 5 miles. The RV was doing between 60 and 65.
Where o where is the common sense in this country?????????
Since people can not be trusted to drive safely around here especially on Hwy 97.
I hope there will be more police patrols and unmarked cars to catch these idiotic people in the act of total disregard for others.
Enough already, there is nothing in this world that is worth risking your life over.
SLOW DOWN. I’m not going to die because of you. Behave like a grown up, or lose your licence!!
